    The incidence of pica in a sample of dialysis patients

    End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) occurs when the kidneys are no longer able to function at a level necessary for day to day life. Pica refers to the persistent, compulsive craving for and ingestion of nonfood items and certain food items. ESRD may constitute a potent stress and stimulus for pica, especially in those patients with an underlying cultural predisposition. The occurrence of pica in a South Florida dialysis unit was studied via a carefully designed a pica questionnaire aimed towards creating a human connection. A significantly greater proportion of subjects endorsing pica practices were found in the dialysis group (38.3%) as compared to the control group (16%). Dialysis patients endorsing pica behaviors were significantly younger than those who denied pica behavior. Additionally there was a significantly greater proportion of females endorsing pica behaviors. Odds ratios analyses revealed greater odds of engaging in pica behaviors for Black participants than Hispanics or Whites. Pagophagia (ice pica) was the most frequently reported type of pica practice. The incidence of pica in this study was considerably higher than that which had been found in past studies. This likely resulted from the unique manner in which the information was educed. Implications and suggestions for future research directions are discussed

    A Second Large Subglacial Impact Crater in Northwest Greenland?

    Following the discovery of the Hiawatha impact crater beneath the northwest margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet, we explored satellite and aerogeophysical data in search of additional such craters. Here we report the discovery of a possible second subglacial impact crater that is 36.5 km wide and 183 km southeast of the Hiawatha impact crater. Although buried by 2 km of ice, the structure's rim induces a conspicuously circular surface expression, it possesses a central uplift and it causes a negative gravity anomaly. The existence of two closely-spaced and similarlysized complex craters raises the possibility that they formed during related impact events. However, the second structure's morphology is shallower, its overlying ice is conformal and older, and such an event can be explained by chance. We conclude that the identified structure is very likely an impact crater, but it is unlikely to be a twin of the Hiawatha impact crater

    The WISDOM Radar: Unveiling the Subsurface Beneath the ExoMars Rover and Identifying the Best Locations for Drilling

    The search for evidence of past or present life on Mars is the principal objective of the 2020 ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Rover mission. If such evidence is to be found anywhere, it will most likely be in the subsurface, where organic molecules are shielded from the destructive effects of ionizing radiation and atmospheric oxidants. For this reason, the ExoMars Rover mission has been optimized to investigate the subsurface to identify, understand, and sample those locations where conditions for the preservation of evidence of past life are most likely to be found. The Water Ice Subsurface Deposit Observation on Mars (WISDOM) ground-penetrating radar has been designed to provide information about the nature of the shallow subsurface over depth ranging from 3 to 10 m (with a vertical resolution of up to 3 cm), depending on the dielectric properties of the regolith. This depth range is critical to understanding the geologic evolution stratigraphy and distribution and state of subsurface H2O, which provide important clues in the search for life and the identification of optimal drilling sites for investigation and sampling by the Rover's 2-m drill. WISDOM will help ensure the safety and success of drilling operations by identification of potential hazards that might interfere with retrieval of subsurface samples

    Excess noise in GaAs and AlGaAs avalanche photodiodes with GaSb absorption regions—composite structures grown using interfacial misfit arrays

    Interfacial misfit arrays were embedded within two avalanche photodiode (APD) structures. This allowed GaSb absorption layers to be combined with wide-bandgap multiplication regions, consisting of GaAs and Al0.8Ga0.2As, respectively. The GaAs APD represents the simplest case. The Al0.8Ga0.2As APD shows reduced dark currents of 5.07 μAcm−2 at 90% of the breakdown voltage, and values for effective below 0.2. Random-path-length modeled excess noise is compared with experimental data, for both samples. The designs could be developed further, allowing operation to be extended to longer wavelengths, using other established absorber materials which are lattice matched to GaSb

    Predicting effects of environmental change on a migratory herbivore

    Changes in climate, food abundance and disturbance from humans threaten the ability of species to successfully use stopover sites and migrate between non-breeding and breeding areas. To devise successful conservation strategies for migratory species we need to be able to predict how such changes will affect both individuals and populations. Such predictions should ideally be process-based, focusing on the mechanisms through which changes alter individual physiological state and behavior. In this study we use a process-based model to evaluate how Black Brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) foraging on common eelgrass (Zostera marina) at a stopover site (Humboldt Bay, USA), may be affected by changes in sea level, food abundance and disturbance. The model is individual-based, with empirically based parameters, and incorporates the immigration of birds into the site, tidal changes in availability of eelgrass, seasonal and depth-related changes in eelgrass biomass, foraging behavior and energetics of the birds, and their mass- dependent decisions to emigrate. The model is validated by comparing predictions to observations across a range of system properties including the time birds spent foraging, probability of birds emigrating, mean stopover duration, peak bird numbers, rates of mass gain and distribution of birds within the site: all 11 predictions were within 35% of the observed value, and 8 within 20%. The model predicted that the eelgrass within the site could potentially support up to five times as many birds as currently use the site. Future predictions indicated that the rate of mass gain and mean stopover duration were relatively insensitive to sea level rise over the next 100 years, primarily because eelgrass habitat could redistribute shoreward into intertidal mudflats within the site to compensate for higher sea levels. In contrast, the rate of mass gain and mean stopover duration were sensitive to changes in total eelgrass biomass and the percentage of time for which birds were disturbed. We discuss the consequences of these predictions for Black Brant conservation. A wide range of migratory species responses are expected in response to environmental change. Process-based models are potential tools to predict such responses and understand the mechanisms which underpin them

    Inhibition of CDK activity and PCNA-dependent DNA replication by p21 is blocked by interaction with the HPV-16 E7 oncoprotein

    p21 inhibits cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) activity and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)-dependent DNA replication by binding to CDK/cyclin complexes and to PCNA through distinct domains. The human papillomavirus (HPV)-16 E7 oncoprotein (16E7) abrogated a DNA damage-induced cell cycle arrest in vivo, despite high levels of p21. Using cell lysates and purified proteins we show that 16E7 prevented p21 both from inhibiting CDK2/cyclin E activity and PCNA-dependent DNA replication, whereas the nononcogenic HPV-6 E7 had reduced effects. Inactivation of both inhibitory functions of p21 was attained through binding between 16E7 and sequences in the carboxy-terminal end of p21 that overlap with the PCNA-binding site and the second p21 cyclin-binding motif. These data imply that the carboxyl terminus of p21 simultaneously modulates both CDK activity and PCNA-dependent DNA replication and that a single protein, 16E7, can override this modulation to disrupt normal cell cycle control
