Seasonal variability of turbidity, salinity, temperature and suspended chlorophyll in a strongly tidal sub-estuary: The Lynher Marine Conservation Zone
The Lynher Estuary in Southwest England is a small, strongly tidal sub-estuary of the Tamar Estuary. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ), a part of the Plymouth Sound and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA). Management of the Lynher SSSI and MCZ stipulates that good water quality and sediment quality should be maintained; as such, a good understanding of its responses to influences such as climate change and changes in agricultural practices within its catchment area is required. Observations of salinity, temperature, suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations, estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) behaviour, and chlorophyll-a are presented for the Lynher over a 1-y period. The dataset provides important baseline information with which to identify future changes and guide management of the SSSI and MCZ as well as adding to our knowledge of estuarine systems. Salt intrusion is largely controlled by tides and runoff. A persistent ETM occurs that is closely associated with the freshwater-saltwater interface at high water (HW) and with a minimum in dissolved oxygen concentrations. HW depth-averaged ETM magnitudes are relatively low, less than 60âŻmgâŻlâ1 and typically 30âŻmgâŻlâ1 over the observation period. Larger tides and stronger flood-tide wind speeds lead to a stronger ETM. Tidal river HW SPM concentrations are intrinsically small (8âŻÂ±âŻ8âŻmgâŻlâ1 during the observation period). Surface chlorophyll-a concentrations are low during winter (when they often peak near the ETM) and are much higher during spring and summer
Biological control of pestiferous slugs using Tetanocera elata (Fabricius) (Diptera: Sciomyzidae): Larval behavior and feeding on slugs exposed to Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita (Schneider, 1859)
While the larval stage of Tetanocera elata (Diptera: Sciomyzidae) is a known parasitoid and predator of pestiferous slugs, its biology and predatory behavior as well as its interaction with slug parasitic nematodes requires further investigation. In this study, survival of larvae fed from the neonate stage on Deroceras reticulatum MĂŒller (a previously known prey species) was significantly greater (P = 0.023) than for larvae fed on Deroceras invadens Reise with 100% and 40% survival respectively. However, when fed solely on D. reticulatum which were previously exposed to P. hermaphrodita, only 20% of neonate larvae pupariated successfully. Ninety percent of neonate larvae maintained without food for the first four days and subsequently fed on D. reticulatum pupariated successfully although this decreased to below 50% for â„6 days without food. Predatory third instar T. elata larvae appeared to select nematode-exposed D. reticulatum over non-exposed slugs with the continued feeding on nematode-exposed slugs also reducing the chances of successful pupariation by 25%. Records of maximum egg-laying by laboratory-reared female adults were greater (487 eggs) than previously recorded for field-caught adults (3 7 3). The implications of these results for the potential use of T. elata as a biological control agent of pestiferous slugs are discussed. © 2019 Elsevier Inc
Emergency ambulance service involvement with residential care homes in the support of older people with dementia : an observational study

Despite initiatives to reduce unplanned hospital admissions for this population, little is known about the involvement of emergency services in supporting residents in these settings.METHODS: This paper reports on a longitudinal study that tracked the involvement of emergency ambulance personnel in the support of older people with dementia, resident in care homes with no on-site nursing providing personal care only. 133 residents with dementia across 6 care homes in the East of England were tracked for a year. The paper examines the frequency and reasons for emergency ambulance call-outs, outcomes and factors associated with emergency ambulance service use. RESULTS: 56% of residents used ambulance services. Less than half (43%) of all call-outs resulted in an unscheduled admission to hospital. In addition to trauma following a following a fall in the home, results suggest that at least a reasonable proportion of ambulance contacts are for ambulatory care sensitive conditions. An emergency ambulance is not likely to be called for older rather than younger residents or for women more than men. Length of residence does not influence use of emergency ambulance services among older people with dementia. Contact with primary care services and admission route into the care home were both significantly associated with emergency ambulance service use. The odds of using emergency ambulance services for residents admitted from a relative's home were 90% lower than the odds of using emergency ambulance services for residents admitted from their own home. CONCLUSIONS: Emergency service involvement with this vulnerable population merits further examination. Future research on emergency ambulance service use by older people with dementia in care homes, should account for important contextual factors, namely, presence or absence of on-site nursing, GP involvement, and access to residents' family, alongside resident health characteristics.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Trypanosoma brucei gambiense group 1 is distinguished by a unique amino acid substitution in the HpHb receptor implicated in human serum resistance
Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (Tbr) and T. b. gambiense (Tbg), causative agents of Human African Trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in Africa, have evolved alternative mechanisms of resisting the activity of trypanosome lytic factors (TLFs), components of innate immunity in human serum that protect against infection by other African trypanosomes. In Tbr, lytic activity is suppressed by the Tbr-specific serum-resistance associated (SRA) protein. The mechanism in Tbg is less well understood but has been hypothesized to involve altered activity and expression of haptoglobin haemoglobin receptor (HpHbR). HpHbR has been shown to facilitate internalization of TLF-1 in T.b. brucei (Tbb), a member of the T. brucei species complex that is susceptible to human serum. By evaluating the genetic variability of HpHbR in a comprehensive geographical and taxonomic context, we show that a single substitution that replaces leucine with serine at position 210 is conserved in the most widespread form of Tbg (Tbg group 1) and not found in related taxa, which are either human serum susceptible (Tbb) or known to resist lysis via an alternative mechanism (Tbr and Tbg group 2). We hypothesize that this single substitution contributes to reduced uptake of TLF and thus may play a key role in conferring serum resistance to Tbg group 1. In contrast, similarity in HpHbR sequence among isolates of Tbg group 2 and Tbb/Tbr provides further evidence that human serum resistance in Tbg group 2 is likely independent of HpHbR functio
Spatially Resolved Magnetic Field Structure in the Disk of a T Tauri Star
Magnetic fields in accretion disks play a dominant role during the star
formation process but have hitherto been observationally poorly constrained.
Field strengths have been inferred on T Tauri stars themselves and possibly in
the innermost part of the accretion disk, but the strength and morphology of
the field in the bulk of the disk have not been observed. Unresolved
measurements of polarized emission (arising from elongated dust grains aligned
perpendicular to the field) imply average fields aligned with the disks.
Theoretically, the fields are expected to be largely toroidal, poloidal, or a
mixture of the two, which imply different mechanisms for transporting angular
momentum in the disks of actively accreting young stars such as HL Tau. Here we
report resolved measurements of the polarized 1.25 mm continuum emission from
HL Tau's disk. The magnetic field on a scale of 80 AU is coincident with the
major axis (~210 AU diameter) of the disk. From this we conclude that the
magnetic field inside the disk at this scale cannot be dominated by a vertical
component, though a purely toroidal field does not fit the data well either.
The unexpected morphology suggests that the magnetic field's role for the
accretion of a T Tauri star is more complex than the current theoretical

A vibrational circular dichroism implementation within a Slater-type-orbital based density functional framework and its application to hexa- and hepta-helicenes
We describe the implementation of the rotational strengths for vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) in the Slater-type orbital based Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF) package. We show that our implementation, which makes use of analytical derivative techniques and London atomic orbitals, yields origin independent rotational strengths. The basis set dependence in the particular case of Slater-type basis functions is also discussed. It turns out that the triple zeta STO basis sets with one set of polarization functions (TZP) are adequate for VCD calculations. The origin- dependence of the atomic axial tensors is checked by a distributed origin gauge implementation. The distributed and common origin gauge implementations yield virtually identical atomic axial tensors with the Slater-type basis sets employed here, proving that our implementation yields origin independent rotational strengths. We verify the implementation for a set of benchmark molecules, for which the dependence of the VCD spectra on the particular choice of the exchangeâcorrelation functional is studied. The pure functionals BP86 and OLYP show a particularly good performance. Then, we apply this approach to study the VCD spectra of hexa- and hepta- helicenes. In particular we focus on relationships between the sign of the rotational strengths of the two helicenes
Venous pseudo-aneurysm as a late complication of short-term central venous catheterisation
Complications following central venous catheterisation abound in the medical literature. This reflects the under-estimated potential hazards associated with this procedure as well as an increase in the number of such procedures performed in high-risk patients. We report on a case where a venous pseudo-aneurysm developed four months after the removal of a short-term central venous catheter in a moderately high-risk patient
The accuracy of clinical staging of stage I-IIIa non-small cell lung cancer: An analysis based on individual participant data
BACKGROUND: Clinical staging of NSCLC helps determine prognosis and management of patients; few data exist on accuracy of clinical staging and the impact on treatment and survival of patients. We assessed whether participant or trial characteristics were associated with clinical staging accuracy as well as impact on survival. METHODS: We used individual participant data from RCTs, supplied for a meta-analysis of pre-operative chemotherapy (+/- radiotherapy) versus surgery alone (+/- radiotherapy) in NSCLC. We assessed agreement between clinical TNM (cTNM) stage at randomization and pathological TNM (pTNM) stage, for participants in the control group. RESULTS: Results are based on 698 patients who received surgery alone (+/- radiotherapy) with data for cTNM and pTNM stage. 46% of cases were cTNM stage I, 23% cTNM stage II and 31% cTNM stage IIIa. cTNM stage disagreed with pTNM stage in 48% of cases, with 34% clinically understaged and 14% clinically over-staged. Agreement was not associated with age (p=0.12), gender (p=0.62), histology (p=0.82), staging method (p=0.32) or year of randomisation (p=0.98). Poorer survival in understaged patients was explained by the underlying pTNM stage. Clinical staging failed to detect T4 disease in 10% of cases and misclassified nodal disease in 38%. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates suboptimal agreement between clinical and pathological staging. Discrepancies between clinical and pathological T and N-staging could have led to different treatment decisions in 10% and 38% of cases respectively. There is therefore a need for further research into improving staging accuracy for patients with stage I-IIIa NSCLC
