    How does the substrate affect the Raman and excited state spectra of a carbon nanotube?

    We study the optical properties of a single, semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) that is partially suspended across a trench and partially supported by a SiO2-substrate. By tuning the laser excitation energy across the E33 excitonic resonance of the suspended CNT segment, the scattering intensities of the principal Raman transitions, the radial breathing mode (RBM), the G-mode and the D-mode show strong resonance enhancement of up to three orders of magnitude. In the supported part of the CNT, despite a loss of Raman scattering intensity of up to two orders of magnitude, we recover the E33 excitonic resonance suffering a substrate-induced red shift of 50 meV. The peak intensity ratio between G-band and D-band is highly sensitive to the presence of the substrate and varies by one order of magnitude, demonstrating the much higher defect density in the supported CNT segments. By comparing the E33 resonance spectra measured by Raman excitation spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) excitation spectroscopy in the suspended CNT segment, we observe that the peak energy in the PL excitation spectrum is red-shifted by 40 meV. This shift is associated with the energy difference between the localized exciton dominating the PL excitation spectrum and the free exciton giving rise to the Raman excitation spectrum. High-resolution Raman spectra reveal substrate-induced symmetry breaking, as evidenced by the appearance of additional peaks in the strongly broadened Raman G band. Laser-induced line shifts of RBM and G band measured on the suspended CNT segment are both linear as a function of the laser excitation power. Stokes/anti-Stokes measurements, however, reveal an increase of the G phonon population while the RBM phonon population is rather independent of the laser excitation power.Comment: Revised manuscript, 20 pages, 8 figure

    Optical-phonon resonances with saddle-point excitons in twisted-bilayer graphene

    Twisted-bilayer graphene (tBLG) exhibits van Hove singularities in the density of states that can be tuned by changing the twisting angle θ\theta. A θ\theta-defined tBLG has been produced and characterized with optical reflectivity and resonance Raman scattering. The θ\theta-engineered optical response is shown to be consistent with persistent saddle-point excitons. Separate resonances with Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering components can be achieved due to the sharpness of the two-dimensional saddle-point excitons, similar to what has been previously observed for one-dimensional carbon nanotubes. The excitation power dependence for the Stokes and anti-Stokes emissions indicate that the two processes are correlated and that they share the same phonon.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    The link between Terra Preta de Índio and the use of charcoal to improve soil quality.

    Amazonian Dark Earth ? Terra Preta de Índio. Characterization The Amazonian Dark Earth (ADE) or Terra Preta de Índio shows normally a plaggic, terric or hortic horizons. These horizons are identified by the dark matrix colors of the top layers, and presence of ceramics and charcoal pieces. The more widely accepted theory about the origin of these epipedons is that they were improved by Amerindian populations in Pre Colombian Indian settlements. The tophorizons on ADE sites show some differences on soil chemical, physical and hydraulic properties compared to the adjacent soils in the region. The tophorizon shows typically high amounts of P, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) relative to the surrounding soils. The high amounts of soil organic matter (SOM) and black carbon strongly influence the color, the structure and the hydraulic properties. The texture is lighter and the workability of the ADE is easier, and the drainage is, habitually, very good. Because of their easy workability and longer lasting in relation to surrounding soils, the local population intensively uses those sites. ADE sites seem to be a very resilient soil type to keep their good soil physical qualities as when submitted to an intensive soil management. In this paper we discuss some investigations concerning a better characterization and expansion of the knowledge of ADE sites. Moreover the approach to reproduce those soils using as key component charcoal residues are also reviewed and discussed. Terra Preta reproduction Many experiment, monitoring and modeling of the dynamic of the water, nutrients and soil organic matter in soil with addition of charcoal are on ongoing research in Manaus. The first experiment at field conditions, investigating the effect of a combination of mineral fertilizers and charcoal as a mean of reducing nutrient leaching tested anual crops in a randomized complete block design with 15 treatments with five replication including organic amendment combinations with and without fertilization (compost, chicken manure, litter and charcoal). Plots fertilized with NPK and lime + charcoal application showed better plant growth as plots fertilized alone. Our first experiment with Banana showed some better mineral nutrition for N in the plants growing on plots were charcoal were applied

    Proteomic changes in serum of first onset, antidepressant drug-naïve major depression patients

    Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex and multi-factorial disorder. Although genetic factors and other molecular aspects of MDD have been widely studied, the underlying pathological mechanisms are still mostly unknown. We sought to investigate the pathophysiology of MDD by identifying and characterising serum molecular differences and their correlation to symptom severity in first onset, antidepressant drug-naïve MDD patients. We performed an exploratory molecular profiling study on serum samples of MDD patients and controls using multiplex immunoassay and label-free liquid chromatography mass spectrometry in data independent mode (LC-MSE). We included two independent cohorts of first onset, antidepressant drug-naïve MDD patients (n = 23 and 15) and matched controls (n = 42 and 21) in our study in order to validate the results. The main outcome included the following list of circulatory molecules changing and/or correlating to symptom severity: angiotensin-converting enzyme, acute phase proteins (e.g. ferritin and serotransferrin), brain-derived neurotrophic factor, complement component C4-B, cortisol, cytokines (e.g. macrophage migration inhibitory factor and interleukin-16), extracellular newly identified receptor for advanced glycosylation end products-binding protein, growth hormone and superoxide dismutase-1. This study provides evidence of an increased pro-inflammatory and oxidative stress response, followed by a hyperactivation of the HPA-axis in the acute stages of first onset MDD, as well as a dysregulation in growth factor pathways.     Transient peak-strain matching partially recovers the age-impaired mechanoadaptive cortical bone response

    Mechanoadaptation maintains bone mass and architecture; its failure underlies age-related decline in bone strength. It is unclear whether this is due to failure of osteocytes to sense strain, osteoblasts to form bone or insufficient mechanical stimulus. Mechanoadaptation can be restored to aged bone by surgical neurectomy, suggesting that changes in loading history can rescue mechanoadaptation. We use non-biased, whole-bone tibial analyses, along with characterisation of surface strains and ensuing mechanoadaptive responses in mice at a range of ages, to explore whether sufficient load magnitude can activate mechanoadaptation in aged bone. We find that younger mice adapt when imposed strains are lower than in mature and aged bone. Intriguingly, imposition of short-term, high magnitude loading effectively primes cortical but not trabecular bone of aged mice to respond. This response was regionally-matched to highest strains measured by digital image correlation and to osteocytic mechanoactivation. These data indicate that aged bone’s loading response can be partially recovered, non-invasively by transient, focal high strain regions. Our results indicate that old murine bone does respond to load when the loading is of sufficient magnitude, and bones’ age-related adaptation failure may be due to insufficient mechanical stimulus to trigger mechanoadaptation

    Near-Infrared interferometry of Eta Carinae with high spatial and spectral resolution using the VLTI and the AMBER instrument

    We present the first NIR spectro-interferometry of the LBV Eta Carinae. The K band observations were performed with the AMBER instrument of the ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer using three 8.2m Unit Telescopes with baselines from 42 to 89m. The aim of this work is to study the wavelength dependence of Eta Car's optically thick wind region with a high spatial resolution of 5 mas (11 AU) and high spectral resolution. The medium spectral resolution observations (R=1,500) were performed in the wavelength range around both the HeI 2.059 micron and the Br gamma 2.166 micron emission lines, the high spectral resolution observations (R=12,000) only in the Br gamma line region. In the K-band continuum, a diameter of 4.0 +/-0.2 mas (Gaussian FWHM, fit range 28-89m) was measured for Eta Car's optically thick wind region. If we fit Hillier et al. (2001) model visibilities to the observed AMBER visibilities, we obtain 50 % encircled-energy diameters of 4.2, 6.5 and 9.6mas in the 2.17 micron continuum, the HeI, and the Br gamma emission lines, respectively. In the continuum near the Br gamma line, an elongation along a position angle of 120+/-15 degrees was found, consistent with previous VLTI/VINCI measurements by van Boekel et al. (2003). We compare the measured visibilities with predictions of the radiative transfer model of Hillier et al. (2001), finding good agreement. Furthermore, we discuss the detectability of the hypothetical hot binary companion. For the interpretation of the non-zero differential and closure phases measured within the Br gamma line, we present a simple geometric model of an inclined, latitude-dependent wind zone. Our observations support theoretical models of anisotropic winds from fast-rotating, luminous hot stars with enhanced high-velocity mass loss near the polar regions.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables; A&A in pres

    First observation of Bs -> D_{s2}^{*+} X mu nu decays

    Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the semileptonic decays Bs -> Ds+ X mu nu and Bs -> D0 K+ X mu nu are detected. Two structures are observed in the D0 K+ mass spectrum at masses consistent with the known D^+_{s1}(2536) and $D^{*+}_{s2}(2573) mesons. The measured branching fractions relative to the total Bs semileptonic rate are B(Bs -> D_{s2}^{*+} X mu nu)/B(Bs -> X mu nu)= (3.3\pm 1.0\pm 0.4)%, and B(Bs -> D_{s1}^+ X munu)/B(Bs -> X mu nu)= (5.4\pm 1.2\pm 0.5)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first observation of the D_{s2}^{*+} state in Bs decays; we also measure its mass and width.Comment: 8 pages 2 figures. Published in Physics Letters

    Stridulations Reveal Cryptic Speciation in Neotropical Sympatric Ants

    The taxonomic challenge posed by cryptic species underlines the importance of using multiple criteria in species delimitation. In the current paper we tested the use of acoustic analysis as a tool to assess the real diversity in a cryptic species complex of Neotropical ants. In order to understand the potential of acoustics and to improve consistency in the conclusions by comparing different approaches, phylogenetic relationships of all the morphs considered were assessed by the analysis of a fragment of the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b. We observed that each of the cryptic morph studied presents a morphologically distinct stridulatory organ and that all sympatric morphs produce distinctive stridulations. This is the first evidence of such a degree of specialization in the acoustic organ and signals in ants, which suggests that stridulations may be among the cues used by these ants during inter-specific interactions. Mitochondrial DNA variation corroborated the acoustic differences observed, confirming acoustics as a helpful tool to determine cryptic species in this group of ants, and possibly in stridulating ants in general. Congruent morphological, acoustic and genetic results constitute sufficient evidence to propose each morph studied here as a valid new species, suggesting that P. apicalis is a complex of at least 6 to 9 species, even if they present different levels of divergence. Finally, our results highlight that ant stridulations may be much more informative than hitherto thought, as much for ant communication as for integrative taxonomists
