Individual differences in embodied distance estimation in virtual reality
There are important individual differences when experiencing VR setups. We ran a study with 20 participants who got a scale-matched avatar and were asked to blind-walk to a VR target placed 2.5 meters away. In such setups, people typically underestimate distances by approximately 10% when virtual environments are viewed through head mounted displays. Consistent with previous studies we found that the underestimation was significantly reduced the more embodied the participants were. However, not all participants developed the same level of embodiment when exposed to the exact same conditions
Plasma composition in a sigmoidal anemone active region
Using spectra obtained by the EIS instrument onboard Hinode, we present a
detailed spatially resolved abundance map of an active region (AR)-coronal hole
(CH) complex that covers an area of 359 arcsec x 485 arcsec. The abundance map
provides first ionization potential (FIP) bias levels in various coronal
structures within the large EIS field of view. Overall, FIP bias in the small,
relatively young AR is 2-3. This modest FIP bias is a consequence of the AR
age, its weak heating, and its partial reconnection with the surrounding CH.
Plasma with a coronal composition is concentrated at AR loop footpoints, close
to where fractionation is believed to take place in the chromosphere. In the
AR, we found a moderate positive correlation of FIP bias with nonthermal
velocity and magnetic flux density, both of which are also strongest at the AR
loop footpoints. Pathways of slightly enhanced FIP bias are traced along some
of the loops connecting opposite polarities within the AR. We interpret the
traces of enhanced FIP bias along these loops to be the beginning of
fractionated plasma mixing in the loops. Low FIP bias in a sigmoidal channel
above the AR's main polarity inversion line where ongoing flux cancellation is
taking place, provides new evidence of a bald patch magnetic topology of a
sigmoid/flux rope configfiuration.Comment: For on-line animation, see

I'm a Giant: Walking in Large Virtual Environments at High Speed Gains
Advances in tracking technology and wireless headsets enable walking as a means of locomotion in Virtual Reality. When exploring virtual environments larger than room-scale, it is often desirable to increase users' perceived walking speed, for which we investigate three methods. (1) Ground-Level Scaling increases users' avatar size, allowing them to walk farther. (2) Eye-Level Scaling enables users to walk through a World in Miniature, while maintaining a street-level view. (3) Seven-League Boots amplifies users' movements along their walking path. We conduct a study comparing these methods and find that users feel most embodied using Ground-Level Scaling and consequently increase their stride length. Using Seven-League Boots, unlike the other two methods, diminishes positional accuracy at high gains, and users modify their walking behavior to compensate for the lack of control. Stellar Iron Abundances at the Galactic Center
We present measurements of [Fe/H] for six M supergiant stars and three giant
stars within 0.5 pc of the Galactic Center (GC) and one M supergiant star
within 30 pc of the GC. The results are based on high-resolution (lambda /
Delta lambda =40,000) K-band spectra, taken with CSHELL at the NASA Infrared
Telescope Facility.We determine the iron abundance by detailed abundance
analysis,performed with the spectral synthesis program MOOG.The mean [Fe/H] of
the GC stars is determined to be near solar,[Fe/H] = +0.12 0.22. Our
analysis is a differential analysis, as we have observed and applied the same
analysis technique to eleven cool, luminous stars in the solar neighborhood
with similar temperatures and luminosities as the GC stars. The mean [Fe/H] of
the solar neighborhood comparison stars, [Fe/H] = +0.03 0.16, is similar
to that of the GC stars. The width of the GC [Fe/H] distribution is found to be
narrower than the width of the [Fe/H] distribution of Baade's Window in the
bulge but consistent with the width of the [Fe/H] distribution of giant and

MoveBox: Democratizing MoCap for the Microsoft Rocketbox Avatar Library
This paper presents MoveBox an open sourced toolbox for animating motion captured (MoCap) movements onto the Microsoft Rocketbox library of avatars. Motion capture is performed using a single depth sensor, such as Azure Kinect or Windows Kinect V2. Motion capture is performed in real-time using a single depth sensor, such as Azure Kinect or Windows Kinect V2, or extracted from existing RGB videos offline leveraging deep-learning computer vision techniques. Our toolbox enables real-time animation of the user’s avatar by converting the transformations between systems that have different joints and hierarchies. Additional features of the toolbox include recording, playback and looping animations, as well as basic audio lip sync, blinking and resizing of avatars as well as finger and hand animations. Our main contribution is both in the creation of this open source tool as well as the validation on different devices and discussion of MoveBox’s capabilities by end users
Expansion of magnetic clouds in the outer heliosphere
A large amount of magnetized plasma is frequently ejected from the Sun as
coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Some of these ejections are detected in the
solar wind as magnetic clouds (MCs) that have flux rope signatures. Magnetic
clouds are structures that typically expand in the inner heliosphere. We derive
the expansion properties of MCs in the outer heliosphere from one to five
astronomical units to compare them with those in the inner heliosphere. We
analyze MCs observed by the Ulysses spacecraft using insitu magnetic field and
plasma measurements. The MC boundaries are defined in the MC frame after
defining the MC axis with a minimum variance method applied only to the flux
rope structure. As in the inner heliosphere, a large fraction of the velocity
profile within MCs is close to a linear function of time. This is indicative
of} a self-similar expansion and a MC size that locally follows a power-law of
the solar distance with an exponent called zeta. We derive the value of zeta
from the insitu velocity data. We analyze separately the non-perturbed MCs
(cases showing a linear velocity profile almost for the full event), and
perturbed MCs (cases showing a strongly distorted velocity profile). We find
that non-perturbed MCs expand with a similar non-dimensional expansion rate
(zeta=1.05+-0.34), i.e. slightly faster than at the solar distance and in the
inner heliosphere (zeta=0.91+-0.23). The subset of perturbed MCs expands, as in
the inner heliosphere, at a significantly lower rate and with a larger
dispersion (zeta=0.28+-0.52) as expected from the temporal evolution found in
numerical simulations. This local measure of the expansion also agrees with the
distribution with distance of MC size,mean magnetic field, and plasma
parameters. The MCs interacting with a strong field region, e.g. another MC,
have the most variable expansion rate (ranging from compression to
over-expansion)
Dissecting the genetic basis of wheat blast resistance in the Brazilian wheat cultivar BR 18-Terena.
Background: Wheat blast, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae Triticum (MoT) pathotype, is a global threat to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production. Few blast resistance (R) genes have been identified to date, therefore assessing potential sources of resistance in wheat is important. The Brazilian wheat cultivar BR 18-Terena is considered one of the best sources of resistance to blast and has been widely used in Brazilian breeding programmes, however the underlying genetics of this resistance are unknown. Results: BR 18-Terena was used as the common parent in the development of two recombinant inbred line (RIL) F6 populations with the Brazilian cultivars Anahuac 75 and BRS 179. Populations were phenotyped for resistance at the seedling and heading stage using the sequenced MoT isolate BR32, with transgressive segregation being observed. Genetic maps containing 1779 and 1318 markers, were produced for the Anahuac 75 × BR 18-Terena and BR 18- Terena × BRS 179 populations, respectively. Five quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with seedling resistance, on chromosomes 2B, 4B (2 QTL), 5A and 6A, were identified, as were four QTL associated with heading stage resistance (1A, 2B, 4A and 5A). Seedling and heading stage QTL did not co-locate, despite a significant positive correlation between these traits, indicating that resistance at these developmental stages is likely to be controlled by different genes. BR 18-Terena provided the resistant allele for six QTL, at both developmental stages, with the largest phenotypic effect conferred by a QTL being 24.8% suggesting that BR 18-Terena possesses quantitative resistance. Haplotype analysis of 100 Brazilian wheat cultivars indicates that 11.0% of cultivars already possess a BR 18-Terenalike haplotype for more than one of the identified heading stage QTL. Conclusions: This study suggests that BR 18-Terena possesses quantitative resistance to wheat blast, with nine QTL associated with resistance at either the seedling or heading stage being detected. Wheat blast resistance is also largely tissue-specific. Identification of durable quantitative resistances which can be combined with race-specific R gene-mediated resistance is critical to effectively control wheat blast. Collectively, this work facilitates markerassisted selection to develop new varieties for cultivation in regions at risk from this emerging disease
Tailored, psychological intervention for anxiety or depression in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), TANDEM (Tailored intervention for ANxiety and DEpression Management in COPD): protocol for a randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND: People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at increased risk of depression and anxiety, which greatly reduces their quality of life and is associated with worse outcomes; but these psychological co-morbidities are under-recognised and undertreated in COPD patients. Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) improves mood for up to 6 months but health practitioners under-refer, and patients commonly fail to attend/complete PR. Research suggests that complex non-pharmacological interventions, including both psychological and exercise components, may reduce anxiety and depression in COPD. We have developed a tailored, cognitive behavioural approach (CBA) intervention for patients with COPD and co-morbid anxiety and/or depression ('TANDEM'), which precedes and optimises the benefits of currently offered PR. We hypothesise that such a psychological intervention, delivered by supervised, trained respiratory healthcare professionals, will improve mood in patients with mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression and encourage uptake and completion of PR. METHODS: We will conduct a multi-centre, pragmatic, randomised controlled trial of the TANDEM intervention compared to usual care across the Midlands, London, the South East and Bristol, UK. We will train healthcare professionals familiar with COPD to deliver the manualised, tailored, face-to-face, one-to-one intervention weekly for 6-8 weeks. We will recruit 430 participants from primary, community and secondary care with confirmed COPD and moderate to very severe airflow limitation, who are eligible for assessment for PR, and who screen positive for symptoms of mild/moderate depression and/or anxiety using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS). Participants will be randomised 1.25:1 (intervention: usual care). The co-primary outcomes are the HADS anxiety and depression subscale scores at 6 months; participants will be followed up to 12 months. Secondary outcomes include uptake and completion of PR and healthcare resource use. There will be a parallel process evaluation and a health economic evaluation. DISCUSSION: The TANDEM intervention has the potential to optimise the unrealised synergy between a psychological intervention and PR. The CBA sessions will precede PR and target individuals' cognitions, behaviours and symptoms associated with anxiety and depression to decrease psychological morbidity and increase effective self-management amongst patients with COPD.
