    Discovery of a dark, massive, ALMA-only galaxy at z~5-6 in a tiny 3-millimeter survey

    We report the serendipitous detection of two 3 mm continuum sources found in deep ALMA Band 3 observations to study intermediate redshift galaxies in the COSMOS field. One is near a foreground galaxy at 1.3", but is a previously unknown dust-obscured star-forming galaxy (DSFG) at probable zCO=3.329z_{CO}=3.329, illustrating the risk of misidentifying shorter wavelength counterparts. The optical-to-mm spectral energy distribution (SED) favors a grey λ−0.4\lambda^{-0.4} attenuation curve and results in significantly larger stellar mass and SFR compared to a Calzetti starburst law, suggesting caution when relating progenitors and descendants based on these quantities. The other source is missing from all previous optical/near-infrared/sub-mm/radio catalogs ("ALMA-only"), and remains undetected even in stacked ultradeep optical (>29.6>29.6 AB) and near-infrared (>27.9>27.9 AB) images. Using the ALMA position as a prior reveals faint SNR∼3SNR\sim3 measurements in stacked IRAC 3.6+4.5, ultradeep SCUBA2 850μ\mum, and VLA 3GHz, indicating the source is real. The SED is robustly reproduced by a massive M∗=1010.8M^*=10^{10.8}M⊙_\odot and Mgas=1011M_{gas}=10^{11}M⊙_\odot, highly obscured AV∼4A_V\sim4, star forming SFR∼300SFR\sim300 M⊙_{\odot}yr−1^{-1} galaxy at redshift z=5.5±z=5.5\pm1.1. The ultrasmall 8 arcmin2^{2} survey area implies a large yet uncertain contribution to the cosmic star formation rate density CSFRD(z=5) ∼0.9×10−2\sim0.9\times10^{-2} M⊙_{\odot} yr−1^{-1} Mpc−3^{-3}, comparable to all ultraviolet-selected galaxies combined. These results indicate the existence of a prominent population of DSFGs at z>4z>4, below the typical detection limit of bright galaxies found in single-dish sub-mm surveys, but with larger space densities ∼3×10−5\sim3 \times 10^{-5} Mpc−3^{-3}, higher duty cycles 50−100%50-100\%, contributing more to the CSFRD, and potentially dominating the high-mass galaxy stellar mass function.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 2 galaxies, too many pages, 8 figures, 2 table

    ALMA observations of atomic carbon in z~4 dusty star-forming galaxies

    We present ALMA [CI](1−01-0) (rest frequency 492 GHz) observations for a sample of 13 strongly-lensed dusty star-forming galaxies originally discovered at 1.4mm in a blank-field survey by the South Pole Telescope. We compare these new data with available [CI] observations from the literature, allowing a study of the ISM properties of ∼30\sim 30 extreme dusty star-forming galaxies spanning a redshift range 2<z<52 < z < 5. Using the [CI] line as a tracer of the molecular ISM, we find a mean molecular gas mass for SPT-DSFGs of 6.6×10106.6 \times 10^{10} M⊙_{\odot}. This is in tension with gas masses derived via low-JJ 12^{12}CO and dust masses; bringing the estimates into accordance requires either (a) an elevated CO-to-H2_2 conversion factor for our sample of αCO∼2.5\alpha_{\rm CO} \sim 2.5 and a gas-to-dust ratio ∼200\sim200, or (b) an high carbon abundance XCI∼7×10−5X_{\rm CI} \sim 7\times10^{-5}. Using observations of a range of additional atomic and molecular lines (including [CI], [CII], and multiple transitions of CO), we use a modern Photodissociation Region code (3D-PDR) to assess the physical conditions (including the density, UV radiation field strength, and gas temperature) within the ISM of the DSFGs in our sample. We find that the ISM within our DSFGs is characterised by dense gas permeated by strong UV fields. We note that previous efforts to characterise PDR regions in DSFGs may have significantly underestimated the density of the ISM. Combined, our analysis suggests that the ISM of extreme dusty starbursts at high redshift consists of dense, carbon-rich gas not directly comparable to the ISM of starbursts in the local Universe.Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures.     Sub-kiloparsec Imaging of Cool Molecular Gas in Two Strongly Lensed Dusty, Star-Forming Galaxies

    We present spatially-resolved imaging obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) of three CO lines in two high-redshift gravitationally lensed dusty star-forming galaxies, discovered by the South Pole Telescope. Strong lensing allows us to probe the structure and dynamics of the molecular gas in these two objects, at z=2.78 and z=5.66, with effective source-plane resolution of less than 1kpc. We model the lensed emission from multiple CO transitions and the dust continuum in a consistent manner, finding that the cold molecular gas as traced by low-J CO always has a larger half-light radius than the 870um dust continuum emission. This size difference leads to up to 50% differences in the magnification factor for the cold gas compared to dust. In the z=2.78 galaxy, these CO observations confirm that the background source is undergoing a major merger, while the velocity field of the other source is more complex. We use the ATCA CO observations and comparable resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array dust continuum imaging of the same objects to constrain the CO-H_2 conversion factor with three different procedures, finding good agreement between the methods and values consistent with those found for rapidly star-forming systems. We discuss these galaxies in the context of the star formation - gas mass surface density relation, noting that the change in emitting area with observed CO transition must be accounted for when comparing high-redshift galaxies to their lower redshift counterparts.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in Ap

    The Rest-Frame Submillimeter Spectrum of High-Redshift, Dusty, Star-Forming Galaxies

    We present the average rest-frame spectrum of high-redshift dusty, star-forming galaxies from 250-770GHz. This spectrum was constructed by stacking ALMA 3mm spectra of 22 such sources discovered by the South Pole Telescope and spanning z=2.0-5.7. In addition to multiple bright spectral features of 12CO, [CI], and H2O, we also detect several faint transitions of 13CO, HCN, HNC, HCO+, and CN, and use the observed line strengths to characterize the typical properties of the interstellar medium of these high-redshift starburst galaxies. We find that the 13CO brightness in these objects is comparable to that of the only other z>2 star-forming galaxy in which 13CO has been observed. We show that the emission from the high-critical density molecules HCN, HNC, HCO+, and CN is consistent with a warm, dense medium with T_kin ~ 55K and n_H2 >~ 10^5.5 cm^-3. High molecular hydrogen densities are required to reproduce the observed line ratios, and we demonstrate that alternatives to purely collisional excitation are unlikely to be significant for the bulk of these systems. We quantify the average emission from several species with no individually detected transitions, and find emission from the hydride CH and the linear molecule CCH for the first time at high redshift, indicating that these molecules may be powerful probes of interstellar chemistry in high-redshift systems. These observations represent the first constraints on many molecular species with rest-frame transitions from 0.4-1.2mm in star-forming systems at high redshift, and will be invaluable in making effective use of ALMA in full science operations.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures (2 in appendices); accepted for publication in Ap

    Monitoring metabolic responses to chemotherapy in single cells and tumors using nanostructure-initiator mass spectrometry (NIMS) imaging

    BACKGROUND: Tissue imaging of treatment-induced metabolic changes is useful for optimizing cancer therapies, but commonly used methods require trade-offs between assay sensitivity and spatial resolution. Nanostructure-Initiator Mass Spectrometry imaging (NIMS) permits quantitative co-localization of drugs and treatment response biomarkers in cells and tissues with relatively high resolution. The present feasibility studies use NIMS to monitor phosphorylation of 3(′)-deoxy-3(′)-fluorothymidine (FLT) to FLT-MP in lymphoma cells and solid tumors as an indicator of drug exposure and pharmacodynamic responses. METHODS: NIMS analytical sensitivity and spatial resolution were examined in cultured Burkitt’s lymphoma cells treated briefly with Rapamycin or FLT. Sample aliquots were dispersed on NIMS surfaces for single cell imaging and metabolic profiling, or extracted in parallel for LC-MS/MS analysis. Docetaxel-induced changes in FLT metabolism were also monitored in tissues and tissue extracts from mice bearing drug-sensitive tumor xenografts. To correct for variations in FLT disposition, the ratio of FLT-MP to FLT was used as a measure of TK1 thymidine kinase activity in NIMS images. TK1 and tumor-specific luciferase were measured in adjacent tissue sections using immuno-fluorescence microscopy. RESULTS: NIMS and LC-MS/MS yielded consistent results. FLT, FLT-MP, and Rapamycin were readily detected at the single cell level using NIMS. Rapid changes in endogenous metabolism were detected in drug-treated cells, and rapid accumulation of FLT-MP was seen in most, but not all imaged cells. FLT-MP accumulation in xenograft tumors was shown to be sensitive to Docetaxel treatment, and TK1 immunoreactivity co-localized with tumor-specific antigens in xenograft tumors, supporting a role for xenograft-derived TK1 activity in tumor FLT metabolism. CONCLUSIONS: NIMS is suitable for monitoring drug exposure and metabolite biotransformation with essentially single cell resolution, and provides new spatial and functional dimensions to studies of cancer metabolism without the need for radiotracers or tissue extraction. These findings should prove useful for in vitro and pre-clinical studies of cancer metabolism, and aid the optimization of metabolism-based cancer therapies and diagnostics

    SPT0346-52: Negligible AGN Activity in a Compact, Hyper-starburst Galaxy at z = 5.7

    We present Chandra ACIS-S and ATCA radio continuum observations of the strongly lensed dusty, star-forming galaxy SPT-S J034640-5204.9 (hereafter SPT0346-52) at zz = 5.656. This galaxy has also been observed with ALMA, HST, Spitzer, Herschel, APEX, and the VLT. Previous observations indicate that if the infrared (IR) emission is driven by star formation, then the inferred lensing-corrected star formation rate (∼\sim 4500 M_{\sun} yr−1^{-1}) and star formation rate surface density ΣSFR\Sigma_{\rm SFR} (∼\sim 2000 M_{\sun} {yr^{-1}} {kpc^{-2}}) are both exceptionally high. It remained unclear from the previous data, however, whether a central active galactic nucleus (AGN) contributes appreciably to the IR luminosity. The {\it Chandra} upper limit shows that SPT0346-52 is consistent with being star-formation dominated in the X-ray, and any AGN contribution to the IR emission is negligible. The ATCA radio continuum upper limits are also consistent with the FIR-to-radio correlation for star-forming galaxies with no indication of an additional AGN contribution. The observed prodigious intrinsic IR luminosity of (3.6 ±\pm 0.3) ×\times 1013^{13} L_{\sun} originates almost solely from vigorous star formation activity. With an intrinsic source size of 0.61 ±\pm 0.03 kpc, SPT0346-52 is confirmed to have one of the highest ΣSFR\Sigma_{SFR} of any known galaxy. This high ΣSFR\Sigma_{SFR}, which approaches the Eddington limit for a radiation pressure supported starburst, may be explained by a combination of very high star formation efficiency and gas fraction.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    An invitation to grieve: reconsidering critical incident responses by support teams in the school setting

    This paper proposes that consideration could be given to an invitational intervention rather than an expectational intervention when support personnel respond to a critical incident in schools. Intuitively many practitioners know that it is necessary for guidance/counselling personnel to intervene in schools in and following times of trauma. Most educational authorities in Australia have mandated the formulation of a critical incident intervention plan. This paper defines the term critical incident and then outlines current intervention processes, discussing the efficacy of debriefing interventions. Recent literature suggests that even though it is accepted that a planned intervention is necessary, there is scant evidence as to the effectiveness of debriefing interventions in stemming later symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. The authors of this paper advocate for an expressive therapy intervention that is invitational rather than expectational, arguing that not all people respond to trauma in the same way and to expect that they will need to recall and retell what has happened is most likely a dangerous assumption. A model of invitation using Howard Gardner’s (1983) multiple intelligences is proposed so that students are invited to grieve and understand emotionally what is happening to them following a critical incident
