    NUMERICAL STUDY OF THE GEOMETRIC INFLUENCE OF A FIN IN A CYLINDRICAL HEAT EXCHANGER FOR MELTING OF PCM

    The thermal heat storage it’s an effective way to suit the energy availability with the demand schedule. It can be stored in the means of sensible or latent heat, the latter applying a material denominated Phase Change Material (PCM), which is provided as organic compounds, hydrated salts, paraffins, among others. The latent heat storage systems offer several advantages, like the practically isothermal process of loading and unloading and the high energy density. However, the low thermal conductivity makes the cycle prolonged on these systems, restricting its applicability. Applying computational fluid dynamics, the behavior of the PCM melting process was studied in cylindrical cavities with horizontal and vertical fins, aiming the optimization of the fin geometry. In this way the fin area was kept constant, varying its aspect ratio. The numerical model was validated with results from the literature and it’s composed of the continuity, momentum and energy equations increased by the phase change model. Qualitative and quantitative results are presented, referring to mesh independence, contours of velocity, net fraction and temperature at different moments of the process. The results of the study indicate that the position of the fin in the heat exchanger influences the melting process, although the vertical fins have a faster total melting process, horizontal fins can reach larger partial liquid fractions in less time in the heat exchanger. Such as the position of the fin, the increase of its length propitiates the reduction of the melting time, evidencing the optimal aspect ratio

    Effect of extended surfaces on lauric acid melting process in annular cavities

    The objective of the present work is to parametrically analyze the effect of extended surfaces’ proportion and positioning on the lauric acid melting process, in an annular cavity. In total 46 geometric configurations were studied, varying between 5 area ratios, 5 proportions, and 2 positions of the extended surface. Numerical simulations performed with the finite volume method were used to conduct the study. The numerical model, composed of the continuity, momentum conservation, and energy conservation equations, plus the enthalpy-porosity phase change model, was validated with experimental data from the literature. The Grid Convergence Index (GCI) was used to evaluate the computational mesh, resulting in an average index of 0.0026%. The results are presented in terms of liquid fraction vs Fourier, and Nusselt number vs. Fourier. Besides, velocity vectors, and streamlines, liquid fraction, and temperature fields, were presented, comparing different instants and geometric arrangements. For the analysis of the results, the melting time was considered as a performance indicator. The results revealed that: while there is solid PCM in the cavity's upper section, the melting rate in systems with horizontal extensions is 15% higher than systems with vertical extensions; when the extended surface thinness is increased, the overall melting time is reduced by more than 10% in vertical arrangements and less than 1.5% in horizontal arrangements; the total melting time is nearly 45% faster in systems with vertical extensions than in systems with horizontal extensions

    Evidence for the prepattern/cooption model of vertebrate jaw evolution

    The appearance of jaws was a turning point in vertebrate evolution because it allowed primitive vertebrates to capture and process large, motile prey. The vertebrate jaw consists of separate dorsal and ventral skeletal elements connected by a joint. How this structure evolved from the unjointed gill bar of a jawless ancestor is an unresolved question in vertebrate evolution. To understand the developmental bases of this evolutionary transition, we examined the expression of 12 genes involved in vertebrate pharyngeal patterning in the modern jawless fish lamprey. We find nested expression of Dlx genes, as well as combinatorial expression of Msx, Hand and Gsc genes along the dorso-ventral (DV) axis of the lamprey pharynx, indicating gnathostome-type pharyngeal patterning evolved before the appearance of the jaw. In addition, we find that Bapx and Gdf5/6/7, key regulators of joint formation in gnathostomes, are not expressed in the lamprey first arch, whereas Barx, which is absent from the intermediate first arch in gnathostomes, marks this domain in lamprey. Taken together, these data support a new scenario for jaw evolution in which incorporation of Bapx and Gdf5/6/7 into a preexisting DV patterning program drove the evolution of the jaw by altering the identity of intermediate first-arch chondrocytes. We present this “Pre-pattern/Cooption” model as an alternative to current models linking the evolution of the jaw to the de novo appearance of sophisticated pharyngeal DV patterning

    Chemical Characterization and Source Apportionment of Household Fine Particulate Matter in Rural, Peri-urban, and Urban West Africa

    Household air pollution in sub-Saharan Africa and other developing regions is an important cause of disease burden. Little is known about the chemical composition and sources of household air pollution in sub-Saharan Africa, and how they differ between rural and urban homes. We analyzed the chemical composition and sources of fine particles (PM2.5) in household cooking areas of multiple neighborhoods in Accra, Ghana, and in peri-urban (Banjul) and rural (Basse) areas in The Gambia. In Accra, biomass burning accounted for 39–62% of total PM2.5 mass in the cooking area in different neighborhoods; the absolute contributions were 10–45 μg/m3. Road dust and vehicle emissions comprised 12–33% of PM2.5 mass. Solid waste burning was also a significant contributor to household PM2.5 in a low-income neighborhood but not for those living in better-off areas. In Banjul and Basse, biomass burning was the single dominant source of cooking-area PM2.5, accounting for 74–87% of its total mass; the relative and absolute contributions of biomass smoke to PM2.5 mass were larger in households that used firewood than in those using charcoal, reaching as high as 463 μg/m3 in Basse homes that used firewood for cooking. Our findings demonstrate the need for policies that enhance access to cleaner fuels in both rural and urban areas, and for controlling traffic emissions in cities in sub-Saharan Africa

    Prehistoric agricultural decision making in the western Himalayas: ecological and social variables

    The high-altitude landscape of western Tibet is one of the most extreme environments in which humans have managed to introduce crop cultivation. To date, only sparse palaeoeconomic data have been reported from this region. The authors present archaeobotanical evidence from five sites (dating from the late first millennium BC and the early first millennium AD) located in the cold-arid landscape of western Tibet. The data indicate that barley was widely grown in this region by c. 400 BC but probably fulfilled differing roles within local ecological constraints on cultivation.     In silico evaluation of limited sampling strategies for individualized dosing of extended half-life factor IX concentrates in hemophilia B patients

    PURPOSE: Hemophilia B is a bleeding disorder, caused by a factor IX (FIX) deficiency. Recently, FIX concentrates with extended half-life (EHL) have become available. Prophylactic dosing of EHL-FIX concentrates can be optimized by assessment of individual pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters. To determine these parameters, limited sampling strategies (LSSs) may be applied. The study aims to establish adequate LSSs for estimating individual PK parameters of EHL-FIX concentrates using in silico evaluation. METHODS: Monte Carlo simulations were performed to obtain FIX activity versus time profiles using published population PK models for N9-GP (Refixia), rFIXFc (Alprolix), and rIX-FP (Idelvion). Fourteen LSSs, containing three or four samples taken within 8 days after administration, were formulated. Bayesian analysis was applied to obtain estimates for clearance (CL), half-life (t(1/2)), time to 1% (Time(1%)), and calculated weekly dose (Dose(1%)). Bias and precision of these estimates were assessed to determine which LSS was adequate. RESULTS: For all PK parameters of N9-GP, rFIXFc and rIX-FP bias was generally acceptable (range: −5% to 5%). For N9-GP, precision of all parameters for all LSSs was acceptable (< 25%). For rFIXFc, precision was acceptable for CL and Time(1%), except for t(1/2) (range: 27.1% to 44.7%) and Dose(1%) (range: 12% to 29.4%). For rIX-FP, all LSSs showed acceptable bias and precision, except for Dose(1%) using LSS with the last sample taken on day 3 (LSS 6 and 10). CONCLUSION: Best performing LSSs were LSS with samples taken at days 1, 5, 7, and 8 (N9-GP and rFIXFc) and at days 1, 4, 6, and 8 (rIX-FP), respectively

    Antimicrobial activity of a library of thioxanthones and their potential as efflux pump inhibitors

    The overexpression of efflux pumps is one of the causes of multidrug resistance, which leads to the inefficacy of drugs. This plays a pivotal role in antimicrobial resistance, and the most notable pumps are the AcrAB-TolC system (AcrB belongs to the resistance-nodulation-division family) and the NorA, from the major facilitator superfamily. In bacteria, these structures can also favor virulence and adaptation mechanisms, such as quorum-sensing and the formation of biofilm. In this study, the design and synthesis of a library of thioxanthones as potential efflux pump inhib-itors are described. The thioxanthone derivatives were investigated for their antibacterial activity and inhibition of efflux pumps, biofilm formation, and quorum-sensing. The compounds were also studied for their potential to interact with P-glycoprotein (P-gp, ABCB1), an efflux pump present in mammalian cells, and for their cytotoxicity in both mouse fibroblasts and human Caco-2 cells. The results concerning the real-time ethidium bromide accumulation may suggest a potential bacterial efflux pump inhibition, which has not yet been reported for thioxanthones.     Morphotype broadening of the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) from Oxus civilization 4000 BP, Central Asia

    The region of Transoxiana underwent an early agricultural-demographic transition leading to the earliest proto-urban centers in Central Asia. The agronomic details of this cultural shift are still poorly studied, especially regarding the role that long-generation perennials, such as grapes, played in the cultivation system. In this paper, we present directly dated remains of grape pips from the early urban centers of Sapalli and Djarkutan, in south Uzbekistan. We also present linear morphometric data, which illustrate a considerable range of variation under cultivation that we divide into four distinct morphotypes according to pip shape. While some of the pips in these two assemblages morphologically fall within the range of wild forms, others more closely resemble modern domesticated populations. Most of the specimens measure along a gradient between the two poles, showing a mixed combination of domesticated and wild features. We also point out that the seeds recovered from the Djarkutan temple were, on average, larger and contained more affinity towards domesticated forms than those from domestic contexts. The potential preference of morphotypes seems to suggest that there were recognized different varieties that local cultivators might aware and possibly propagating asexually.- Dating of archaeobotanical samples. - Morphotyping the archaeological grape pips. - Grape morphological diversity and human selection in Bronze Age Central Asia. - Grape seed morphology and early horticulture. - Conclusions. - Method
