Fertility, full-time and part-time female employment in Europe

    Get PDF
This paper aims to analyse the relation between women’s employment patterns, more specifically part-time employment, and fertility trends in European countries, using Eurostat data. It is argued that this approach sheds an innovative light on the debate. The issue of part-time employment is put into perspective in the context of family policies and gender relations. The fertility/employment relationship shows that the overall positive association between fertility and female employment is a consequence of the importance of part-time employment and is not related with full-time employment. Therefore, the change in sign of the fertility employment association after the 1980s could result from the increasing diversification of the labour market

Family mobility is not usually considered in the context of internal migrations. However, the data show that there are characteristics of municipalities that determine how families move and distribute themselves. The analysis of the associations between population, family characteristics, and changes in migratory flows of 308 municipalities, based on the 2011 census information, reflects on family mobility in Portugal, highlighting the differentiating aspects. The associations found, under two territorial scales, allow emphasizing different territorial dynamics with respect to the phenomena of attraction and repulsion, associated with the displacement or permanence of the population in the territories.publishe

Effect of emulsification/internal gelation-based microencapsulation on the viability of akkermansia muciniphila upon prolonged storage and simulated gastrointestinal passage

Akkermansia muciniphila is a common human intestinal commensal with a mucin-degrading nature. Its immunomodulatory characteristics and regulatory role of mucus layer and gut barrier integrity highlight the potential benefits of using this bacterium as an interventional player against inflammatory/cardio-metabolic disorders. In this work, we evaluate the effect of microencapsulation by the emulsification/internal gelation method onA. muciniphila survival during aerobic storage (0, 15, 30 and 95 days) and subsequent exposure to simulatedgastrointestinal passage, in comparison with that of free cells. The present results show that microencapsulation by internal gelation promotes a 64.4 % entrapment efficacy of A. muciniphila cells (maintaining a 108 orderof magnitude for cell viability). Moreover, physical characterization showed that microparticles mean size was53,5 ± 12,1 μm and, as observed by electron scanning microscopy, microcapsules were spherical in shape. Moreimportantly, as storage time increased, encapsulated A. muciniphila demonstrated higher stability in GI conditions, when compared to its free counterpart. In conclusion, microencapsulation by internal gelation seems tobe an appropriate strategy in protecting A. muciniphila against the detrimental gastrointestinal transit after longperiods of aerobic refrigerated storage.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

OBJECTIVE: To understand if COVID-19 pandemic impacts on delays in non-metastatic HER2-negative breast cancer diagnosis and in the beginning/development of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, as well as on changes in treatment plan to Paclitaxel intensification doses, impaired patients’ quality of life and mental health. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of 67 women diagnosed with non-metastatic HER2-negative breast cancer during the first sixteen months of COVID-19 pandemic and receiving neoadjuvant treatment due to pandemic impossibility of immediate definitive cancer surgery following the neoplasm diagnosis. Sociodemographic, Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy Scale - General, Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventory were used for outcomes assessment. Inferential analysis was performed by Mann-Whitney, Pearson's chi-squared, and Fisher's exact tests. The adopted significance was 5%. RESULTS: The study revealed that the oncological diagnosis delays caused a worsening of the patients' physical (8 x 21; p = 0.001), functional (13 x 21; p = 0.03) and general (61 x 83; p = 0.004) well-being; retardment in the beginning of neoadjuvant chemotherapy decreased physical well-being (13 x 21; p = 0.01). Changes in treatment plan, to Paclitaxel doses intensification, had a negative effect on functional well-being (20 x 25.5; p = 0.04). COVID-19 pandemic impacts on neoplasm diagnosis and neoadjuvant treatment delays were also associated with psychosocial manifestations, including higher levels of severe anxiety (60% x 14.5%; p = 0.03 and 40% x 14%; p = 0.04) and depression (40% x 3.2%; p = 0.004 and 60% x 5.3%; p = 0.03) respectively. CONCLUSION: The present study shows that COVID-19 pandemic impacts on non-metastatic HER2-negative breast cancer patients’ diagnosis and neoadjuvant chemotherapy impaired patients' quality of life and mental health

The challenges presented to educational systems and researchers about algorithmic thinking are wide and exciting. Several initiatives are working on contributions. In the framework of a European Project focused on algorithmic thinking skills through play-based learning, we undertook the development of a resource for introducing algorithmic thinking to teachers and children in Early Childhood Education. The paper presents the resource, a deck of cards, highlighting its connections to creativity and algorithmic thinking. The paper briefly introduces the research design in place to pilot together with preliminary data from the tests with future teachers and a group of 5 years-old children. The deck of cards has been well received by both future teachers and children. The simple drawings are considered attractive and allow for diverse decisions about what to represent. Conditions, in particular, were well received by children. Further analysis of existing data will provide more information regarding the potential and limitations of the deck of cards.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
