eXtended hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin for incompressible flow problems with unfitted meshes and interfaces

The eXtended hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (X-HDG) method is developed for the solution of Stokes problems with void or material interfaces. X-HDG is a novel method that combines the hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method with an eXtended finite element strategy, resulting in a high-order, unfitted, superconvergent method, with an explicit definition of the interface geometry by means of a level-set function. For elements not cut by the interface, the standard HDG formulation is applied, whereas a modified weak form for the local problem is proposed for cut elements. Heaviside enrichment is considered on cut faces and in cut elements in the case of bimaterial problems. Two-dimensional numerical examples demonstrate that the applicability, accuracy, and superconvergence properties of HDG are inherited in X-HDG, with the freedom of computational meshes that do not fit the interfacesPeer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Elliptic harbor wave model with perfectly matched layer and exterior bathymetry effects

Standard strategies for dealing with the Sommerfeld condition in elliptic mild-slope models require strong assumptions on the wave field in the region exterior to the computational domain. More precisely, constant bathymetry along (and beyond) the open boundary, and parabolic approximations–based boundary conditions are usually imposed. Generally, these restrictions require large computational domains, implying higher costs for the numerical solver. An alternative method for coastal/harbor applications is proposed here. This approach is based on a perfectly matched layer (PML) that incorporates the effects of the exterior bathymetry. The model only requires constant exterior depth in the alongshore direction, a common approach used for idealizing the exterior bathymetry in elliptic models. In opposition to standard open boundary conditions for mild-slope models, the features of the proposed PML approach include (1) completely noncollinear coastlines, (2) better representation of the real unbounded domain using two different lateral sections to define the exterior bathymetry, and (3) the generation of reliable solutions for any incoming wave direction in a small computational domain. Numerical results of synthetic tests demonstrate that solutions are not significantly perturbed when open boundaries are placed close to the area of interest. In more complex problems, this provides important performance improvements in computational time, as shown for a real application of harbor agitation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

This study presents the results of a diachronic literature review of publications about approaches to ADHD treatment, in order to determine the number and efficacy of treatment approaches during the last 25 years. Results derived from this literature review of three temporal periods (1986-1992; 1994-2000; 2001-2011), show that studies were mainly focused on pharmacological treatment. Possible explanations of this trend are argued, emphasising the need to promote multimodal and contextual intervention

This study presents the results of a diachronic literature review of publications about approaches to ADHD treatment, in order to determine the number and efficacy of treatment approaches during the last 25 years.

This article shows the influence that journalistic genres had on the first organisation of communication studies in Spain as well as the role they remain to play in the teaching of journalism. A review is done starting from the origins of the didactics of genres, continuing with the role of genres in the beginning of regulated studies of journalism, and finalising with an analysis of their place in present education programmes which reveals that practical and theoretical knowledge of the genres are still a main objective in the training of future journalists in Spain.

    Get PDF
The existence of a double and simultaneous tendency in communication of this century is gettting increasingly obvious. This tendency consists of the phenomenon of globalization and the attention to the local environment, two sides of the world of information. The local environment is based on proximity, whereas technology and economy lead us to a global scene with less and less barriers. This general process, with all its contradictions, is what some scholars in communication now define as glocalization

The quantum ground state of self-organized atomic crystals in optical resonators

Cold atoms, driven by a laser and simultaneously coupled to the quantum field of an optical resonator, can self-organize in periodic structures. These structures are supported by the optical lattice, which emerges from the laser light they scatter into the cavity mode, and form when the laser intensity exceeds a threshold value. We study theoretically the quantum ground state of these structures above the pump threshold of self-organization, by mapping the atomic dynamics of the self-organized crystal to a Bose-Hubbard model. We find that the quantum ground state of the self-organized structure can be the one of a Mott-insulator or a superfluid, depending on the pump strength of the driving laser. For very large pump strengths, where the intracavity intensity is maximum and one would expect a Mott-insulator state, we find intervals of parameters where the system is superfluid. These states could be realized in existing experimental setups.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
