    Header Parsing Logic in Network Switches Using Fine and Coarse-Grained Dynamic Reconfiguration Strategies

    Current ASIC only designs which interface with a general purpose processor are fairly restricted as far as their ability to be upgraded after fabrication. The primary intent of the research documented in this thesis is to determine if the inclusion of FPGAs in existing ASIC designs can be considered as an option for alleviating this constraint by analyzing the performance of such a framework as a replacement for the parsing logic in a typical network switch. This thesis also covers an ancilliary goal of the research which is to compare the various methods used to reconfigure modern FPGAs, including the use of self initiated dynamic partial reconfiguration, in regards to the degree in which they interrupt the operation of the device in which an FPGA is embedded. This portion of the research is also conducted in the context of a network switch and focuses on the ability of the network switch to reconfigure itself dynamically when presented with a new type of network traffic

    The area in which the philosophy attributed to the "analytic" tradition turns out to consider similar problems as the "continental" thinkers still seems to be too little explored. The aim of the work is to indicate such similarities between the Peter Geach’s concept of relative identity and the Gilles Deleuze’s concept of difference. According to Geach, identity is mediated in concepts. We think about the identity of "a" and "b" only in the sentence "a is the same X as b". The consequences of this observation are twofold: on the one hand, it shows the degree of our entanglement in conceptual grids; on the other, it shows a being as a dynamic, relational structure. In this aspects, this perspective agrees with Deleuze's proposal. A being is an ambiguous intersection of dynamic relations expressed in the sentence "a is different from b", whereas the identity is an effect of totalitarian thought movement which reduces differences by imposing static conceptual categories on their dynamic system. We are going to present the ontological view on identity question which synthesizes two mentioned conceptions and include a polemical characterization of difficulties implied by discussed perspective and their consequences for practical functioning in the world

    Prenatal diagnosis of Caudal Regression Syndrome : a case report

    BACKGROUND: Caudal regression is a rare syndrome which has a spectrum of congenital malformations ranging from simple anal atresia to absence of sacral, lumbar and possibly lower thoracic vertebrae, to the most severe form which is known as sirenomelia. Maternal diabetes, genetic predisposition and vascular hypoperfusion have been suggested as possible causative factors. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of caudal regression syndrome diagnosed in utero at 22 weeks' of gestation. Prenatal ultrasound examination revealed a sudden interruption of the spine and "frog-like" position of lower limbs. Termination of pregnancy and autopsy findings confirmed the diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis of caudal regression syndrome is possible at 22 weeks' of gestation by ultrasound examination

    A lithographic approach for quantum dot-photonic crystal nanocavity coupling in dilute nitrides

    We report on a novel lithographic approach for the fabrication of integrated quantum dot (QD)-photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavity systems. We exploit unique hydrogen's ability to tailor the band gap energy of dilute nitride semiconductors to fabricate isolated site-controlled QDs via a spatially selective hydrogenation at the nanometer-scale. A deterministic integration of the realized site-controlled QDs with PhC nanocavities is provided by the inherent realignment precision (~ 20 nm) of the electron beam lithography system used for the fabrication of both QDs and PhC cavities. A detailed description of the fabrication steps leading to the realization of integrated QD-PhC cavity systems is provided, together with the experimental evidence of a weak coupling effect between the single-photon emitter and the PhC cavity

    Optical trapping and fluorescence detection in laminar flow streams

    An optical laser trap with fluorescence excitation/emission capability has been integrated in a flow cytometric geometry for the study of microparticle confinement and off-axis fluorescence detection in laminar flow streams. Measurements of particle escape velocity, trapping efficiency, and fluorescence intensity are presented for 2 μm diameter dye-tagged latex microspheres in laminar flow streams having velocities of up to 12 mm/s. Experimental results are compared with theoretical values for flow velocity and fluorescence intensity and found to be in excellent agreement. © 1995 American Institute of Physics

    First trimester diagnosis and screening for fetal aneuploidy

    Maternal serum screening for neural tube defects and fetal aneuploidy in the second trimester has been incorporated into obstetrical practice over the past two decades. Now, as a result of several multicenter trials, first trimester screening between 11 and 14 weeks has been shown to be an effective and reliable screening test for Down syndrome and trisomy 18. Benefits of first trimester screening include earlier identification of the pregnancy at risk for fetal aneuploidy and anatomic defects, in particular, cardiac anomalies, and the option of earlier diagnosis by chorionic villus sampling, if available. This policy updates the American College of Medical Genetics policy statement entitled Second Trimester Maternal Serum Screening for Fetal Open Neural Tube Defects and Aneuploidy (2004) and complements the sections of American College of Medical Genetic’s Standards and Guidelines for Clinical Genetics Laboratories entitled “Prenatal screening for Down syndrome that includes first trimester biochemistry and/or ultrasound measurements.

    Radiation trapping forces on microspheres with optical tweezers

    Axial trapping forces exerted on microspheres are predicted using a Gaussian beam electromagnetic field model and a ray-optics model, and compared with experimental measurements. Ray-optics predicts a maximum trapping efficiency Q= -0.14 for optically trapped polystyrene microspheres in water, compared to a measured value of -0.12 ± 0.014 for 10 μm diam microspheres. When the microspheres are composed of amorphous silica, the predicted ray-optics Q decreases to -0.11, compared to a Q = -0.034 predicted by the electromagnetic field model, and a measured value of -0.012 ± 0.001 for 1 μm diam microspheres. These results indicate that the two models have applicability in two different size regimes, and thus, are complementary

    Objectives To determine the ability of Bishop score and sonographic cervical length to predict time to spontaneous onset of labor and time to delivery in prolonged pregnancy. Methods Ninety-seven women underwent transvaginal ultrasound examination and palpation of the cervix at 291-296 days' gestation according to ultrasound fetometry at 12-20 weeks' gestation. Sonographic cervical length and Bishop score were recorded. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine which variables were independent predictors of the onset of labor/delivery 24 h, 48 h, and 96 h. Receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) curves were drawn to assess diagnostic performance. Results In nulliparous women (n = 45), both Bishop score and sonographic cervical length predicted the onset of labor/delivery 24 h and 48 h (area under ROC curve for the onset of labor 24 h 0.79 vs. 0.80, P = 0.94; for delivery 24 h 0.81 vs. 0.85, P = 0.64; for the onset of labor 48 h 0.73 vs. 0.74, P = 0.90; for delivery 48 h 0.77 vs. 0.71, P = 0.50). Only Bishop score discriminated between nulliparous women who went into labor/delivered 96 h or > 96 h. A logistic regression model including Bishop score and cervical length was superior to Bishop score alone in predicting delivery 24 h (area under ROC curve 0.93 vs. 0.81, P = 0.03) and superior to Bishop score alone and cervical length alone in predicting the onset of labor 24 h (area under ROC curve 0.90 vs. 0.79, P = 0.06; and 0.90 vs. 0.80, P = 0.06). In parous women (n = 52), Bishop score and sonographic cervical length predicted the onset of labor/delivery 24 h (area under ROC curve for the onset of labor 0.75 vs. 0.69, P = 0.49; for delivery 0.74 vs. 0.70, P = 0.62), but only Bishop score discriminated between women who went into labor/delivered 48 h and > 48 h. Three parous women had not gone into labor and six had not given birth at 96 h. In parous women logistic regression models including both Bishop score and cervical length did not substantially improve prediction of the time to onset of labor/delivery. Conclusions In prolonged pregnancy Bishop score and sonographic cervical length have a similar ability to predict the time to the onset of labor and delivery. In nulliparous women the use of logistic regression models including Bishop score and cervical length is likely to offer better prediction of the onset of labor/delivery 24 h than the use of the Bishop score alone
