High redshift evolution of optically and IR-selected galaxies: a comparison with CDM scenarios
A combination of ground-based (NTT and VLT) and HST (HDF-N and HDF-S) public
imaging surveys have been used to collect a sample of 1712 I-selected and 319
galaxies. Photometric redshifts have been obtained for all these
galaxies. The results have been compared with the prediction of an analytic
rendition of the current CDM hierarchical models for galaxy formation. We focus
in particular on two observed quantities: the galaxy redshift distribution at
K<21 and the evolution of the UV luminosity density. The derived photometric
redshift distribution is in agreement with the hierarchical CDM prediction,
with a fraction of only 5% of galaxies detected at z>2. This result strongly
supports hierarchical scenarios where present-day massive galaxies are the
result of merging processes. The observed UV luminosity density in the
I-selected sample is confined within a factor of 4 over the whole range
0<z<4.5. CDM models in a critical Universe are not able to produce the density
of UV photons that is observed at z>3. CDM models in -dominated
universe are in better agreement at 3<z<4.5, but predict a pronounced peak at
z~1.5 and a drop by a factor of 8 from z=1.5 to z=4 that is not observed in the
data. We conclude that improvements are required in the treatment of the
physical processes directly related to the SFR, e.g. the starbust activity in

Semi-Analytic Modelling of Galaxy Formation: The Local Universe
Using semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, we investigate galaxy
properties such as the Tully-Fisher relation, the B and K-band luminosity
functions, cold gas contents, sizes, metallicities, and colours, and compare
our results with observations of local galaxies. We investigate several
different recipes for star formation and supernova feedback, including choices
that are similar to the treatment in Kauffmann, White & Guiderdoni (1993) and
Cole et al. (1994) as well as some new recipes. We obtain good agreement with
all of the key local observations mentioned above. In particular, in our best
models, we simultaneously produce good agreement with both the observed B and
K-band luminosity functions and the I-band Tully-Fisher relation. Improved
cooling and supernova feedback modelling, inclusion of dust extinction, and an
improved Press-Schechter model all contribute to this success. We present
results for several variants of the CDM family of cosmologies, and find that
models with values of --0.5 give the best agreement with

Exploring access to end of life care for ethnic minorities with end stage kidney disease through recruitment in action research
BACKGROUND: Variation in provision of palliative care in kidney services and practitioner concerns to provide equitable access led to the development of this study which focussed on the perspectives of South Asian patients and their care providers. As people with a South Asian background experience a higher risk of Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) and end stage kidney failure (ESKF) compared to the majority population but wait longer for a transplant, there is a need for end of life care to be accessible for this group of patients. Furthermore because non English speakers and people at end of life are often excluded from research there is a dearth of research evidence with which to inform service improvement. This paper aims to explore issues relating to the process of recruitment of patients for a research project which contribute to our understanding of access to end of life care for ethnic minority patients in the kidney setting. METHODS: The study employed an action research methodology with interviews and focus groups to capture and reflect on the process of engaging with South Asian patients about end of life care. Researchers and kidney care clinicians on four NHS sites in the UK recruited South Asian patients with ESKF who were requiring end of life care to take part in individual interviews; and other clinicians who provided care to South Asian kidney patients at end of life to take part in focus groups exploring end of life care issues. In action research planning, action and evaluation are interlinked and data were analysed with emergent themes fed back to care providers through the research cycle. Reflections on the process of patient recruitment generated focus group discussions about access which were analysed thematically and reported here. RESULTS: Sixteen patients were recruited to interview and 45 different care providers took part in 14 focus groups across the sites. The process of recruiting patients to interview and subsequent focus group data highlighted some of the key issues concerning access to end of life care. These were: the identification of patients approaching end of life; and their awareness of end of life care; language barriers and informal carers' roles in mediating communication; and contrasting cultures in end of life kidney care. CONCLUSIONS: Reflection on the process of recruitment in this action research study provided insight into the complex scenario of end of life in kidney care. Some of the emerging issues such as the difficulty identifying patients are likely to be common across all patient groups, whilst others concerning language barriers and third party communication are more specific to ethnic minorities. A focus on South Asian ethnicity contributes to better understanding of patient perspectives and generic concepts as well as access to end of life kidney care for this group of patients in the UK. Action research was a useful methodology for achieving this and for informing future research to include informal carers and other ethnic groups.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Semi-analytic modeling of the EBL and consequences for extragalactic gamma-ray spectra
Attenuation of high-energy gamma rays by pair-production with UV, optical and
IR extragalactic background light (EBL) photons provides a link between the
history of galaxy formation and high-energy astrophysics. We present results
from our latest semi-analytic models (SAMs), which employ the main ingredients
thought to be important to galaxy formation and evolution, as well as an
improved model for reprocessing of starlight by dust to mid- and far-IR
wavelengths. These SAMs are based upon a Lambda-CDM hierarchical structural
formation scenario, and are successful in reproducing a large variety of
observational constraints such as number counts, luminosity and mass functions,
and color bimodality. Our fiducial model is based upon a WMAP5 cosmology, and
treats dust emission using empirical templates. This model predicts a
background flux considerably lower than optical and near-IR measurements that
rely on subtraction of zodiacal and galactic foregrounds, and near the lower
bounds set by number counts of resolvable sources at a large number of
wavelengths. We also show the results of varying cosmological parameters and
dust attenuation model used in our SAM. For each EBL prediction, we show how
the optical depth due to electron-positron pair-production is affected by
redshift and gamma-ray energy, and the effect of gamma-ray absorption on the
spectra of a variety of extragalactic sources. We conclude with a discussion of
the implications of our work, comparisons to other models and key measurements
of the EBL and a discussion of how the burgeoning science of gamma-ray
astronomy will continue to help constrain cosmology. The low EBL flux predicted
by our fiducial model suggests an optimistic future for further studies of

The effect of S-substitution at the O6-guanine site on the structure and dynamics of a DNA oligomer containing a G:T mismatch
The effect of S-substitution on the O6 guanine site of a 13-mer DNA duplex containing a G:T mismatch is studied using molecular dynamics. The structure, dynamic evolution and hydration of the S-substituted duplex are compared with those of a normal duplex, a duplex with Ssubstitution on guanine, but no mismatch and a duplex with just a G:T mismatch. The S-substituted mismatch leads to cell death rather than repair. One suggestion is that the G:T mismatch recognition protein recognises the S-substituted mismatch (GS:T) as G:T. This leads to a cycle of futile repair ending in DNA breakage and cell death. We find that some structural features of the helix are similar for the duplex with the G:T mismatch and that with the S-substituted mismatch, but differ from the normal duplex, notably the helical twist. These differences arise from the change in the hydrogen-bonding pattern of the base pair. However a marked feature of the S-substituted G:T mismatch duplex is a very large opening. This showed considerable variability. It is suggested that this enlarged opening would lend support to an alternative model of cell death in which the mismatch protein attaches to thioguanine and activates downstream damage-response pathways. Attack on the sulphur by reactive oxygen species, also leading to cell death, would also be aided by the large, variable opening
Speculation on the origin of sub-baseline excursions of CH4 at Cape Grim
The Advanced Global Atmospheric Gases Experiment (AGAGE) program has historically measured in situ
methane (CH4
) at Cape Grim via gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) in 40 minutely
grab samples. By adding continuous, high precision in situ measurements of CH4
(Picarro cavity ring-down
spectroscopy [CRDS]) at both Cape Grim, Tasmania, and Casey, Antarctica, a new feature has become apparent
in the Cape Grim CH4
record. During the austral summer (December to February), the Cape Grim CH4
record
periodically drops below baseline. For example, in Figure 1, a number of sustained episodes of depressed CH4
concentration can be seen below the baseline selected data shown in red. Notably, these episodes are also seen
in the GC-FID record.
In this presentation, we examine these sub-baseline excursions of CH4
. In conjunction with meteorology and a
variety of other chemical species measured at Cape Grim, including radon, ozone, hydrogen and ethane, we speculate on a number of possible mechanisms that might be responsible for these dips in CH4 mixing ratio
A Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopic survey of the faint M31 satellites And IX, And XI, And XII, and And XIII
We present the first spectroscopic analysis of the faint M31 satellite
galaxies, AndXI and AndXIII, and a reanalysis of existing spectroscopic data
for two further faint companions, And IX and AndXII. By combining data obtained
using the DEIMOS spectrograph mounted on the Keck II telescope with deep
photometry from the Suprime-Cam instrument on Subaru, we have calculated global
properties for the dwarfs, such as systemic velocities, metallicites and
half-light radii.We find each dwarf to be very metal poor ([Fe/H] -2 both
photometrically and spectroscopically, from their stacked spectrum), and as
such, they continue to follow the luminosity-metallicity relationship
established with brighter dwarfs. We are unable to resolve a dispersion for And
XI due to small sample size and low S/N, but we set a one sigma upper limit of
sigma-v <5 km/s. For And IX, And XII and And XIII we resolve velocity
dispersions of v=4.5 (+3.4,-3.2), 2.6(+5.1,-2.6) and 9.7(+8.9,-4.5) km/s, and
derive masses within the half light radii of 6.2(+5.3,-5.1)x10^6 Msun, 2.4
(+6.5,-2.4)x10^6 Msun and 1.1(+1.4,-0.7)x10^7 Msun respectively. We discuss
each satellite in the context of the Mateo relations for dwarf spheroidal
galaxies, and the Universal halo profiles established for Milky Way dwarfs
(Walker et al. 2009). For both galaxies, this sees them fall below the
Universal halo profiles of Walker et al. (2009). When combined with the
findings of McConnachie & Irwin (2006a), which reveal that the M31 satellites
are twice as extended (in terms of both half-light and tidal radii) as their
Milky Way counterparts, these results suggest that the satellite population of
the Andromeda system could inhabit halos that are significantly different from

On merger bias and the clustering of quasars
We use the large catalogues of haloes available for the Millennium Simulation
to test whether recently merged haloes exhibit stronger large-scale clustering
than other haloes of the same mass. This effect could help to understand the
very strong clustering of quasars at high redshift. However, we find no
statistically significant excess bias for recently merged haloes over the
redshift range 2 < z < 5, with the most massive haloes showing an excess of at
most ~5%. We also consider galaxies extracted from a semianalytic model built
on the Millennium Simulation. At fixed stellar mass, we find an excess bias of
~ 20-30% for recently merged objects, decreasing with increasing stellar mass.
The fact that recently-merged galaxies are found in systematically more massive
haloes than other galaxies of the same stellar mass accounts for about half of
this signal, and perhaps more for high-mass galaxies. The weak merger bias of
massive systems suggests that objects of merger-driven nature, such as quasars,
do not cluster significantly differently than other objects of the same
characteristic mass. We discuss the implications of these results for the
interpretation of clustering data with respect to quasar duty cycles,

TGF-b2 induction regulates invasiveness of theileria-transformed leukocytes and disease susceptibility
Theileria parasites invade and transform bovine leukocytes causing either East Coast fever (T. parva), or tropical theileriosis (T. annulata). Susceptible animals usually die within weeks of infection, but indigenous infected cattle show markedly reduced pathology, suggesting that host genetic factors may cause disease susceptibility. Attenuated live vaccines are widely used to control tropical theileriosis and attenuation is associated with reduced invasiveness of infected macrophages in vitro. Disease pathogenesis is therefore linked to aggressive invasiveness, rather than uncontrolled proliferation of Theileria-infected leukocytes. We show that the invasive potential of Theileria-transformed leukocytes involves TGF-b signalling. Attenuated live vaccine lines express reduced TGF-b2 and their invasiveness can be rescued with exogenous TGF-b. Importantly, infected macrophages from disease susceptible Holstein-Friesian (HF) cows express more TGF-b2 and traverse Matrigel with great efficiency compared to those from disease-resistant Sahiwal cattle. Thus, TGF-b2 levels correlate with disease susceptibility. Using fluorescence and time-lapse video microscopy we show that Theileria-infected, disease-susceptible HF macrophages exhibit increased actin dynamics in their lamellipodia and podosomal adhesion structures and develop more membrane blebs. TGF-b2-associated invasiveness in HF macrophages has a transcription-independent element that relies on cytoskeleton remodelling via activation of Rho kinase (ROCK). We propose that a TGF-b autocrine loop confers an amoeboid-like motility on Theileria-infected leukocytes, which combines with MMP-dependent motility to drive invasiveness and virulence
Microdissection: A method developed to investigate mechanisms involved in transmissible spongiform encephalopathy pathogenesis
BACKGROUND: The transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a group of neurodegenerative diseases affecting both human and animals. The neuroanatomical changes which occur in the central nervous system (CNS) of TSE infected animals include vacuolation, gliosis, neuronal loss and the deposition of a disease specific protein, PrP(Sc). Experimental murine models of scrapie, a TSE of sheep, have revealed that pathology may be confined to specific brain areas with targeting of particular neuronal subsets depending on route of injection and scrapie isolate. To assess the biochemical changes which are taking place in these targeted areas it was necessary to develop a reliable sampling procedure (microdissection) which could be used for a variety of tests such as western blotting and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. METHODS: The method described is for the microdissection of murine brains. To assess the usefulness of this dissection technique for producing similar sample types for analysis by various down-stream biochemical techniques, the areas dissected were analysed for PrP(Sc )by western blotting and compared to immunocytochemical (ICC) techniques. RESULTS: Results show that the method generates samples yielding a consistent protein content which can be analysed for PrP(Sc). The areas in which PrP(Sc )is found by western blotting compares well with localisation visualised by immunocytochemistry. CONCLUSION: The microdisssection method described can be used to generate samples suitable for a range of biochemical techniques. Using these samples a range of assays can be carried out which will help to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying TSE pathogenesis. The method would also be useful for any study requiring the investigation of discrete areas within the murine brain
