A numerical–analytical study to determine a suitable distribution of plies in sandwich structures subjected to high-velocity impact

This work presents a study that was undertaken to find the configuration that corresponds to the highest ballistic limit for composite sandwich structures made of glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) sandwich skins and a crushable foam. To this end, a new three-dimensional finite element (FE) model was implemented. The model accounts for the constitutive response of the GFRP sandwich skins and the crushable foam by means of two subroutines. A previously developed analytical model was used to support and complete the results of the FE model. Experimental data were also used to validate both models in the vicinity of the ballistic limit for the neutral configuration (same number of plies on the front and rear face skins). Thus, the most appropriate configuration to improve the ballistic limit for a structure with the same material (same number of plies) was obtained by testing different distributions of laminae. The ballistic limit was then estimated for all the possible configurations and the energy-absorption mechanisms were analysed to reveal new insights into the behaviour of these structures when the neutral configuration is varied. In addition, the damaged areas of the specimens were compared between the experiments and the model. As a result, the most suitable configuration turned out to be associated with thicker rear face skins, which produce higher ballistic limits. The largest fraction of the energy was absorbed by the out-of-plane mechanisms, this behaviour being maintained in all the configurations. Experimental observations established that the damaged area of the front face skin was smaller than the damage produced in the rear face skin and that bending effects were notable in the latter. The affected areas were proved to have a round shape, presenting the largest size in the vicinity of the ballistic limit

This article presents an agent-based solution for data fusion in Homeland Security. Communication technology has been developed very fast in the last decades. We can get lots of data in milliseconds. Our current problem is to process such amounts of data in order to provide useful information. We have to focus our effort on developing intelligent information systems able to handle big amounts of data extracting or revealing relations among data and able to produce information easily understandable for the human user. That is the case of data fusion in tactical operations, especially in the field of defense and Homeland security. Our research is focused on obtaining a Multi-agent system able to inference future enemy’s actions or behaviors from data received from heterogeneous sensors

2015.This work is performing in ZEBOL, a company that sells pumping equipment since 1988. Specifically, the work takes place in a service department that exists within the company itself that is responsible for the management and project implementation. These projects are generated through the sale of pumping equipment, that require within the scope of the customer, the installation or placement of the equipment and complementary elements to make that your pumping system operates properly. However, the management and implementation of these projects has been inadequate, since there are no successful projects in scope, time and cost, being the last one, the one with more impact. To determine the current status of the company, an analysis of the degree of maturity in project management in the service department was conducted. The project management maturity model of Kerzner (2001) was used for this purpose, and just the first three levels were applied. The application of questionnaires for the first three levels in the service department was conducted to the CEO, the COO and project supervisors. Once all the information was collected, it was processed and an analysis of the data was performed. Within the information obtained in the analysis is the need for methodological guidelines for the management and implementation of projects and the need for some training of the staff in the service department ZEBOL in project management. As a result of the evaluation of project management maturity model levels of Kerzner (2001), was the identification of the phases of the life cycle of projects, what groups of processes are involved at each stage and what areas of knowledge are involved in these processes. Once the information was obtained, became a sort of it to have a clearer vision of how they manage and implement the projects currently in the service department ZEBOL. Within the information obtained was the identification of three stages in the life cycle of projects that are 1) proposal 2) Project development and 3) Maintenance. After analyzing the current situation of the service department, proceeded with the approach of the desired situation. In the current situation was determined that there is a need to manage and execute projects as a unified manner and under the same language. Therefore, a proposed xvi methodological guide for project management in the service department of ZEBOL was developed. The methodological guide includes a tool in Microsoft Excel with templates for ease use and access to information when required. Finally, the proposal for the desired situation culminates with a plan for implementation of the proposed methodological guide, which provides information on who should be trained and the time required for training. Adolescence is a stage of transition from childhood to the adult world, which is affected among other things by the tension between the incorporation into the labor market and permanence in the educational system (D'alessandre, 2010). However, there is little information related to adolescents who do not study or work. Because of the information that antisocial and criminal behavior tends to accentuate at this stage of life (Gaeta & Galvanoski, 2011), this study identifies differences in the presence of antisocial and criminal behavior among students in two public high schools at Pachuca Hidalgo, Mexico, and adolescents who do not study or work in the same city using the AD measure (Seisdedos & Sánchez, 2001). The sample consisted of 120 teenagers between 14 and 18 years of age, with a total of 81 students and 39 adolescents who do not study or work. Through an analysis of variance ANOVA of sex by occupation were found significant differences in the presence of antisocial behaviors between adolescents who study and those who do not. A difference was observed in the presence of criminal behavior also, specifically in the group of male adolescents who did not study. It was observed that those adolescent men and women who are studying, are less likely to commit criminal acts, compared to those adolescent especially men who are not within a school or work system. The role played by the socio-cultural context as a risk factor or protection for the appearance of criminal and antisocial behavior is highlighted

Improving randomness characterization through Bayesian model selection

Nowadays random number generation plays an essential role in technology with important applications in areas ranging from cryptography, which lies at the core of current communication protocols, to Monte Carlo methods, and other probabilistic algorithms. In this context, a crucial scientific endeavour is to develop effective methods that allow the characterization of random number generators. However, commonly employed methods either lack formality (e.g. the NIST test suite), or are inapplicable in principle (e.g. the characterization derived from the Algorithmic Theory of Information (ATI)). In this letter we present a novel method based on Bayesian model selection, which is both rigorous and effective, for characterizing randomness in a bit sequence. We derive analytic expressions for a model's likelihood which is then used to compute its posterior probability distribution. Our method proves to be more rigorous than NIST's suite and the Borel-Normality criterion and its implementation is straightforward. We have applied our method to an experimental device based on the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion, implemented in our laboratory, to confirm that it behaves as a genuine quantum random number generator (QRNG). As our approach relies on Bayesian inference, which entails model generalizability, our scheme transcends individual sequence analysis, leading to a characterization of the source of the random sequences itself.Comment: 25 page
