    Drying Kinetics Of Barley Grains And Effects On The Germination Index

    This study aimed to assess the drying kinetics of barley grains and, using mathematical modeling, to evaluate the diffusivity during drying and after drying to evaluate the effect of high drying temperatures on the seed germination index for malt production. Three drying temperatures 40, 60 and 80°C were used. The last two, 60 and 80°C, reached moisture close to ideal for storage with 6 and 4 hours respectively; at 40°C, drying process took 12 hours and would still take additional hours to reach 13% moisture on a dry basis. Drying temperature influenced the germination power. The protein content was reduced according to increased drying time. The diffusivity coefficient was higher in conventional than in intermittent drying, probably due to heat loss in the intermittent process. It was observed that higher the temperature higher is the diffusivity.     Parâmetros hematológicos e bioquímicos em três raças de cavalos de alta performance do Sul do Brasil

    The hematological and biochemical parameters are useful tools for clinics and feeding management of athlete equines. The population of high performance horses consists of different breed groups, displaying specific phenotypic and metabolic characteristics related to the type of sport activity they perform. In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the South of Brazil, racing, jumping, polo, endurance, reigning, and dressage are the main activities. This study investigated the hemato-biochemical parameters in three high performance horse breeds from Southern Brazil. A total number of 154 horses belonging to the breeds Thoroughbred, Brasileiro de Hipismo, and Criollo, were selected for this study. Within each breed, samples were collected from males (n=12) and non-pregnant females (n=12) of two ages: 1 to 3 years of age (n=12) and over five years of age (n=12). Hematological (total count of erythrocytes and leukocytes, blood cell volume, hemoglobin, and differential count of leukocytes) and biochemical (lactate, fructosamine, glucose, cholesterol, total protein, albumin, globulins, fibrinogen, urea, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and enzymes LDH, AST, GGT, and CK) parameters were analyzed. Significant differences were observed in hematological and biochemical parameters, except for calcium and albumin, among breeds. There was no significant effect of age or sex within breed. This study shows that the local population, the breed and the type of sport activity are important variables to be considered in the analysis of blood parameters of horses.Os parâmetros hematológicos e bioquímicos são ferramentas que auxiliam na clínica e no manejo alimentar do eqüino atleta. Na população eqüina de alta performance existem diferentes grupos raciais que apresentam características fenotípicas e metabólicas específicas, relacionadas com o tipo de atividade esportiva que exercem. Atualmente, no Rio Grande do Sul (Sul do Brasil), são reconhecidas as modalidades esportivas de corrida, salto, polo, enduro, provas de rédeas e provas funcionais. O presente trabalho estudou os parâmetros hemato-bioquímicos em três raças de eqüinos de alta performance no Sul do Brasil. Um total de 154 animais das raças Puro Sangue Inglês, Brasileiro de Hipismo e Crioula foram selecionados para este estudo. Em cada grupo racial foram obtidas amostras de machos (n=12) e fêmeas não gestantes (n=12) e de duas faixas etárias: de 1 a 3 anos (n=12) e de mais de cinco anos (n=12). Foram analisados parâmetros hematológicos (contagem total de eritrócitos e leucócitos, hematócrito, hemoglobina e contagem diferencial de leucócitos) e bioquímicos (lactato, fructosamina, glicose, colesterol, proteína total, albumina, globulinas, fibrinogênio, uréia, cálcio, magnésio, fósforo e enzimas LDH, AST, GGT e CK). Foram observadas diferenças significativas nos parâmetros hematológicos e bioquímicos, exceto para cálcio e albumina, entre os grupos raciais. Não houve efeito significativo da idade e do sexo dentro da mesma raça.     COMPOSIÇÃO CORPORAL DE MACROELEMENTOS MINERAIS EM BOVINOS E BUBALINOS EM CONFINAMENTO

    A pesquisa foi conduzida na Universidade Federal de Viçosa(MG), no período entre dezembro de 1994 e julho de 1995 Objetivou-se com a pesquisa estimar o conteúdo corporal de macroelementos minerais de bovinos Nelore, mestiços europeu-zebu e bubalinos, abatidos em diferentes estádios de maturidade. Foram utilizados 35 bovinos machos não-castrados sendo 12 Nelore (NEL), 12 F1 Holandês-Nelore (HN), 11 bimestiços 1/4 Fleckvieh-5/16 Angus-7/16 Nelore (BM) e 11 bubalinos mestiços Mediterrâneo (BUF), com pesos vivos médios iniciais de 294; 404; 358; e 353 Kg, respectivamente, e idade média de 24 meses. Os animais de cada grupo genético foram, aleatoriamente, divididos em três grupos experimentais, abate inicial ou referência (AB) e dois grupos de alimentação ad libitum (AL1 e AL2). No grupo AB foram alocados quatro animais NEL, quatro HN, três BM e três BUF e nos grupos AL1 e AL2 quatro animais, de cada grupo genético. Após o período de adaptação de 60 dias, onde os animais receberam o mesmo tratamento, aqueles do grupo AB foram abatidos. Os animais dos grupos (AL1 e AL2) eram abatidos ao atingirem pesos equivalentes a 100 e 110 % do peso à maturidade da vaca do grupo racial correspondente. Estes pesos eram, respectivamente, 450 e 500 Kg para NEL e BUF e 500 e 550 Kg para HN e BM. A ração continha milho desintegrado com palha e sabugo, farelo de soja, uréia, minerais e feno de braquiária decumbens, numa proporção de concentrado:volumoso 50:50 e 13% de proteína bruta, na matéria seca. Após o abate, utilizando-se amostras representativas da carcaça e dos diferentes órgãos e tecidos corporais, foram determinadas as quantidades do macroelementos minerais (cálcio, fósforo, magnésio, sódio e potássio) contidas no corpo vazio dos animais. Para se estimar as mudanças na composição corporal nos intervalos de pesos incluídos na pesquisa, foram ajustadas equações de regressão dos logarítmos dos conteúdos de macroelementos minerais (Kg), em função do peso corporal vazio (PCV), em Kg.     Production of vegetable oil blends and structured lipids and their effect on wound healing

    Two oil blends (sunflower/canola oils 85/15 (BL1) and canola/linseed oils 70/30 (BL2)), were prepared and enzymatically interesterified to be applied to surgically-induced wounds in rats. Following surgery, the animals were submitted to the Treatment with Physiological Saline (TPS) (control group), Blends (TBL), and Structured Lipids (TSL). The control group (TPS) received physiological saline solution for 15 days. In TBL, BL1 was administered during the inflammation phase (days 0-3) and BL2 in the tissue formation and remodeling phase (days 4-15). In TSL, Structured Lipid 1 (SL1) and Structured Lipid 2 (SL2) were used instead of BL1 and BL2, respectively. The aim of this study was to compare wound closure evolution among rats treated with the blends or structured lipids versus control rats treated with physiological saline. The wound healing process was evaluated by measuring the wound areas along the treatments and the concentrations of cytokines. An increase in the areas of wounds treated with the blends and structured lipids in the inflammatory phase was observed, followed by a steeper closure curve compared to wounds treated with physiological saline. The changes observed during the inflammatory phase suggest a potential therapeutic application in cutaneous wound healing which should be further investigated.</p

    Alignment of the CMS silicon tracker during commissioning with cosmic rays

The official published version of the Paper can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2010 IOPThe CMS silicon tracker, consisting of 1440 silicon pixel and 15 148 silicon strip detector modules, has been aligned using more than three million cosmic ray charged particles, with additional information from optical surveys. The positions of the modules were determined with respect to cosmic ray trajectories to an average precision of 3–4 microns RMS in the barrel and 3–14 microns RMS in the endcap in the most sensitive coordinate. The results have been validated by several studies, including laser beam cross-checks, track fit self-consistency, track residuals in overlapping module regions, and track parameter resolution, and are compared with predictions obtained from simulation. Correlated systematic effects have been investigated.     Commissioning and performance of the CMS pixel tracker with cosmic ray muons

The detector was installed in summer 2008, commissioned with charge injections, and operated in the 3.8 T magnetic field during cosmic ray data taking. This paper reports on the first running experience and presents results on the pixel tracker performance, which are found to be in line with the design specifications of this detector.     Performance of the CMS drift-tube chamber local trigger with cosmic rays

    The performance of the Local Trigger based on the drift-tube system of the CMS experiment has been studied using muons from cosmic ray events collected during the commissioning of the detector in 2008. The properties of the system are extensively tested and compared with the simulation. The effect of the random arrival time of the cosmic rays on the trigger performance is reported, and the results are compared with the design expectations for proton-proton collisions and with previous measurements obtained with muon beams
