    Triplets of Quasars at high redshift I: Photometric data

    We have conducted an optical and infrared imaging in the neighbourhoods of 4 triplets of quasars. R, z', J and Ks images were obtained with MOSAIC II and ISPI at Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory. Accurate relative photometry and astrometry were obtained from these images for subsequent use in deriving photometric redshifts. We analyzed the homogeneity and depth of the photometric catalog by comparing with results coming from the literature. The good agreement shows that our magnitudes are reliable to study large scale structure reaching limiting magnitudes of R = 24.5, z' = 22.5, J = 20.5 and Ks = 19.0. With this catalog we can study the neighbourhoods of the triplets of quasars searching for galaxy overdensities such as groups and galaxy clusters.Comment: The paper contains 12 figures and 3 table

    Using Geological Facies to Estimate Chromate Sorption to Soils

    Quantifying the extent to which contaminant metals bind to subsurface soils is important for risk assessment, the tendency for a contaminant to migrate, and developing environmental remediation strategies. Unfortunately, subsurface soils vary widely in their composition, which in turn affect their tendency to bind metals. The hypothesis of this study was predicated on how a better understanding of geological facies would reduce uncertainty associated with predicting contaminant metal sorption. Facies are layers of sediment deposited in the subsurface due to similar depositional conditions, including energy of an overlying waterway. As such, facies are expected to have similar assemblages of minerals, particle size distributions, origins of organic matter, and similar microbial population structures. These are all important factors affecting contaminant metal sorption. The approach of this study was to collect 42 composite soil samples from a 5 m by 1.5 m grid outcrop in Graniteville, South Carolina and five end-member facies samples. The fraction of each of the five facies comprising the 42 composite soil samples were estimated. Particle size distribution (gravel, sand, silt, and clay fractions), pH, organic matter (OM), iron coating content, and microbial colony forming units were determined for each composite soil and the five end-member facies soils. Because hexavalent chromium (Cr) is the most common contaminant metal in the U.S. to exceed drinking water limits, this highly toxic and soluble metal was used as a model contaminant to provide a measure of contaminant sorption. Chromium distribution coefficients (Kd = Crsoil/Crwater) were measured. Significant correlations were identified between several soil chemical and microbial properties. A significant correlation (r = 0.423; p ≀ 0.05, d.f. = 47) was also determined between measured Kd values and Kd values calculated based on knowledge of facies Kd values. Importantly, the calculated values were characterized by large amount of inherent error. Additional work is needed to determine the applicability of this approach for remediation of contaminated sites and how best to identify appropriate facies for this novel application

    Persistently elevated behavioral inhibition (BI) in children is a marker of vulnerability to psychopathology. However, little research has considered the joint influences of caregiver and child factors that may moderate the continuity of BI in early childhood, particularly genetic variants that may serve as markers of biological plasticity, such as the serotonin transporter linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR). We explored this issue in 371 preschoolers and their caregivers, examining whether parent characteristics (i.e., overinvolvement or anxiety disorder) and child 5-HTTLPR influenced the continuity of BI between ages 3 and 5. Measures were observational ratings of child BI, observational and questionnaire measures of parenting, and parent interviews for anxiety disorder history, and children were genotyped for the 5-HTTLPR. Parent factors did not moderate the association between age 3 and age 5 BI; however, child BI at age 3 interacted with children\u27s 5-HTTLPR variants to predict age 5 BI, such that children with at least one copy of the short allele exhibited less continuity of BI over time relative to children without this putative plasticity variant. Findings are consistent with previous work indicating the 5-HTTLPR short variant increases plasticity to contextual influences, thereby serving to decrease the continuity of BI in early childhood

    GBT Discovery of Two Binary Millisecond Pulsars in the Globular Cluster M30

    We report the discovery of two binary millisecond pulsars in the core-collapsed globular cluster M30 using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) at 20 cm. PSR J2140-2310A (M30A) is an eclipsing 11-ms pulsar in a 4-hr circular orbit and PSR J2140-23B (M30B) is a 13-ms pulsar in an as yet undetermined but most likely highly eccentric (e>0.5) and relativistic orbit. Timing observations of M30A with a 20-month baseline have provided precise determinations of the pulsar's position (within 4" of the optical centroid of the cluster), and spin and orbital parameters, which constrain the mass of the companion star to be m_2 >~ 0.1Msun. The position of M30A is coincident with a possible thermal X-ray point source found in archival Chandra data which is most likely due to emission from hot polar caps on the neutron star. In addition, there is a faint (V_555 ~ 23.8) star visible in archival HST F555W data that may be the companion to the pulsar. Eclipses of the pulsed radio emission from M30A by the ionized wind from the compact companion star show a frequency dependent duration (\propto\nu^{-\alpha} with \alpha ~ 0.4-0.5) and delay the pulse arrival times near eclipse ingress and egress by up to 2-3 ms. Future observations of M30 may allow both the measurement of post-Keplerian orbital parameters from M30B and the detection of new pulsars due to the effects of strong diffractive scintillation.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to ApJ.     High-precision 40Ar/39Ar dating of pleistocene tuffs and temporal anchoring of the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary

VCS acknowledges support from the John Fell Fund, University of Oxford.High-precision 40Ar/39Ar ages for a series of proximal tuffs from the Toba super-volcano in Indonesia, and the Bishop Tuff and Lava Creek Tuff B in North America have been obtained. Core from Ocean Drilling Project Site 758 in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean contains discrete tephra layers that we have geochemically correlated to the Young Toba Tuff (73.7 ± 0.3 ka), Middle Toba Tuff (502 ± 0.7 ka) and two eruptions (OTTA and OTTB) related to the Old Toba Tuff (792.4 ± 0.5 and 785.6 ± 0.7 ka, respectively) (40Ar/39Ar data reported as full external precision, 1 sigma). Within ODP 758 Termination IX is coincident with OTTB and hence this age tightly constrains the transition from Marine Isotope Stage 19–20 for the Indian Ocean. The core also preserves the location of the Australasian tektites, and the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary with Bayesian age-depth models used to determine the ages of these events, c. 784 ka and c. 786 ka, respectively. In North America, the Bishop Tuff (766.6 ± 0.4 ka) and Lava Creek Tuff B (627.0 ± 1.5 ka) have quantifiable stratigraphic relationships to the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary. Linear age-depth extrapolation, allowing for uncertainties associated with potential hiatuses in five different terrestrial sections, defines a geomagnetic reversal age of 789 ± 6 ka. Considering our data with respect to the previously published age data for the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary of Sagnotti et al. (2014), we suggest at the level of temporal resolution currently attainable using radioisotopic dating the last reversal of Earths geomagnetic field was isochronous. An overall Matuyama-Brunhes reversal age of 783.4 ± 0.6 ka is calculated, which allowing for inherent uncertainties in the astronomical dating approach, is indistinguishable from the LR04 stack age (780 ± 5 ka) for the geomagnetic boundary. Our high-precision age is 10 ± 2 ka older than the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary age of 773 ± 1 ka, as reported previously by Channell et al. (2010) for Atlantic Ocean records. As ODP 758 features in the LR04 marine stack, the high-precision 40Ar/39Ar ages determined here, as well as the Matuyama-Brunhes boundary age, can be used as temporally accurate and precise anchors for the Pleistocene time scale.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Digoxin net secretory transport in bronchial epithelial cell layers is not exclusively mediated by P-glycoprotein/MDR1

Hence, we characterised MDR1 expression and the bidirectional transport of the common MDR1 probe 3H-digoxin in air-liquid interfaced (ALI) layers of normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells and of the Calu-3 bronchial epithelial cell line at different passage numbers. Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCKII) cells transfected with the human MDR1 were used as positive controls. 3H-digoxin efflux ratio (ER) was low and highly variable in NHBE layers. In contrast, ER=11.4 or 3.0 was measured in Calu-3 layers at a low or high passage number, respectively. These were, however, in contradiction with increased MDR1 protein levels observed upon passaging. Furthermore, ATP depletion and the two MDR1 inhibitory antibodies MRK16 and UIC2 had no or only a marginal impact on 3H-digoxin net secretory transport in the cell line. Our data do not support an exclusive role of MDR1 in 3H-digoxin apparent efflux in ALI Calu-3 layers and suggest the participation of an ATP-independent carrier. Identification of this transporter might provide a better understanding of drug distribution in the lungs.Peer reviewe

    Baryon Number in Warped GUTs : Model Building and (Dark Matter Related) Phenomenology

    In the past year, a new non-supersymmetric framework for electroweak symmetry breaking (with or without Higgs) involving SU(2)_L * SU(2)_R * U(1)_{B-L} in higher dimensional warped geometry has been suggested. In this work, we embed this gauge structure into a GUT such as SO(10) or Pati-Salam. We showed recently (in hep-ph/0403143) that in a warped GUT, a stable Kaluza-Klein fermion can arise as a consequence of imposing proton stability. Here, we specify a complete realistic model where this particle is a weakly interacting right-handed neutrino, and present a detailed study of this new dark matter candidate, providing relic density and detection predictions. We discuss phenomenological aspects associated with the existence of other light (<~ TeV) KK fermions (related to the neutrino), whose lightness is a direct consequence of the top quark's heaviness. The AdS/CFT interpretation of this construction is also presented.     Synthesis of Organosilicon Ligands for Europium (III) and Gadolinium (III) as Potential Imaging Agents

    The relaxivity of MRI contrast agents can be increased by increasing the size of the contrast agent and by increasing concentration of the bound gadolinium. Large multi-site ligands able to coordinate several metal centres show increased relaxivity as a result. In this paper, an “aza-type Michael” reaction is used to prepare cyclen derivatives that can be attached to organosilicon frameworks via hydrosilylation reactions. A range of organosilicon frameworks were tested including silsesquioxane cages and dimethylsilylbenzene derivatives. Michael donors with strong electron withdrawing groups could be used to alkylate cyclen on three amine centres in a single step. Hydrosilylation successfully attached these to mono-, di-, and tri-dimethylsilyl-substituted benzene derivatives. The europium and gadolinium complexes were formed and studied using luminescence spectroscopy and relaxometry. This showed the complexes to contain two bound water moles per lanthanide centre and T1 relaxation time measurements demonstrated an increase in relaxivity had been achieved, in particular for the trisubstituted scaffold 1,3,5-tris((pentane-sDO3A)dimethylsilyl)benzene-Gd3. This showed a marked increase in the relaxivity (13.1 r1p/mM−1s−1)
