Exploring Eye Movements in Patients with Glaucoma When Viewing a Driving Scene
Background: Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease and a leading cause of visual disability. Automated assessment of the visual field determines the different stages in the disease process: it would be desirable to link these measurements taken in the clinic with patient's actual function, or establish if patients compensate for their restricted field of view when performing everyday tasks. Hence, this study investigated eye movements in glaucomatous patients when viewing driving scenes in a hazard perception test (HPT).
Methodology/Principal Findings: The HPT is a component of the UK driving licence test consisting of a series of short film clips of various traffic scenes viewed from the driver's perspective each containing hazardous situations that require the camera car to change direction or slow down. Data from nine glaucomatous patients with binocular visual field defects and ten age-matched control subjects were considered (all experienced drivers). Each subject viewed 26 different films with eye movements simultaneously monitored by an eye tracker. Computer software was purpose written to pre-process the data, co-register it to the film clips and to quantify eye movements and point-of-regard (using a dynamic bivariate contour ellipse analysis). On average, and across all HPT films, patients exhibited different eye movement characteristics to controls making, for example, significantly more saccades (P<0.001; 95% confidence interval for mean increase: 9.2 to 22.4%). Whilst the average region of ‘point-of-regard’ of the patients did not differ significantly from the controls, there were revealing cases where patients failed to see a hazard in relation to their binocular visual field defect.
Conclusions/Significance: Characteristics of eye movement patterns in patients with bilateral glaucoma can differ significantly from age-matched controls when viewing a traffic scene. Further studies of eye movements made by glaucomatous patients could provide useful information about the definition of the visual field component required for fitness to drive
Deep learning optimized single-pixel LiDAR
Interest in autonomous transport has led to a demand for 3D imaging technologies capable of resolving fine details at long range. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems have become a key technology in this area, with depth information typically gained through time-of-flight photon-counting measurements of a scanned laser spot. Single-pixel imaging methods offer an alternative approach to spot-scanning, which allows a choice of sampling basis. In this work, we present a prototype LiDAR system, which compressively samples the scene using a deep learning optimized sampling basis and reconstruction algorithms. We demonstrate that this approach improves scene reconstruction quality compared to an orthogonal sampling method, with reflectivity and depth accuracy improvements of 57% and 16%, respectively, for one frame per second acquisition rates. This method may pave the way for improved scan-free LiDAR systems for driverless cars and for fully optimized sampling to decision-making pipelines
XMM-Newton Observations of MBM 12: More Constraints on the Solar Wind Charge Exchange and Local Bubble Emissions
We present the first analysis of an XMM-Newton observation of the nearby molecular cloud MBM 12. We find that in the direction of MBM 12 the total O VII (0.57 keV) triplet emission is 1.8(+0.5/-0.6) photons/sq cm/s/sr (or Line Units - LU) while for the O VIII (0.65 keV) line emission we find a 3(sigma) upper limit of <1 LU. We also use a heliospheric model to calculate the O VII and O VIII emission generated by Solar Wind Charge-eXchange (SWCX) which we compare to the XMM-Newton observations. This comparison provides new constraints on the relative heliospheric and Local Bubble contributions to the local diffuse X-ray background. The heliospheric SWCX model predicts 0.82 LU for O VII, which accounts for approx. 46+/-15% of the observed value, and 0.33 LU for the O VIII line emission consistent with the XMM-Newton observed value. We discuss our results in combination with previous observations of the MBM 12 with CHANDRA and Suzaku
Motif Minang Kaluak Paku Kacang Balimbiang pada Busana Kasual
Minangkabau sebagai salah satu suku bangsa yang mengisi kekhasan
budaya Indonesia memiliki warisan budaya yang terpencar dalam berbagai aspek
kehidupannya. Salah satu warisan budaya adalah seni ukir. Seni ukir yang
dikembangkan dengan mengambil ide dari alam memiliki makna-makna filosofi
bagi kehidupan masyarakat Minangkabau. Semua jenis ukiran yang dipahatkan di
Rumah Gadang menunjukkan unsur penting pembentuk budaya Minangkabau
bercerminkan kepada apa yang ada di alam. Salah satu ukiran pada rumah gadang
yaitu kaluak paku. Kaluak paku adalah nama salah satu motif ukiran dalam adat
Minangkabau. Berasal dari motif gulungan (kelukan/kaluak) pada ujung tanaman
pakis (paku) yang masih muda. Ukiran kaluak paku rumah gadang melambangkan
tanggung jawab seorang lelaki dalam adat Minangkabau kepada generasi penerus,
sebagai ayah dari anak-anaknya dan sebagai mamak dari kemenakan (keponakan).
Ukiran rumah gadang kaluak paku minangkabau inilah yang menjadi sumber ide
penciptaan busana pada tugas akhir ini.
Pada Penciptaan karya ini menggunakan beberapa metode, yaitu metode
pendekatan estetis dan ergonomis, metode pengumpulan data dengan studi
pustaka, dan motode penciptaan dengan teori Gustami Sp 3 tahap 6 Langkah.
Dalam proses pembuatan karya dibutuhkan beberapa data, cara pengumpulan data
acuan berdasarkan pengumpulan data pustaka yaitu berupa buku, jurnal pada
media sosial, serta aplikasi pada smartphone seperti pinterest. Data yang
dikumpulkan yang paling utama adalah gambar bentuk visual dari ukiran tanaman
kaluak paku minangkabau dan busana kasual.
Penciptaan karya yang dihasilkan yaitu berupa 8 busana kasual. Siluet pada
kesuluruhan hasil karya yaitu memiliki siluet A yang mengembang pada bagian
bawah. Pada penciptaan karya ini menggunakan bahan utama primisima.
Perpaduan warna yang diterapkan menggunakan warna khas minangkabau yang
diambil dari warna bendera adatnya “marawa” yaitu merah, hitam, dan kuning.
Karya- karya yang dihasilkan dengan penggunaan warna tersebut sangat sesuai
dengan tema yang mengangkat ukiran rumah gadang kaluak paku minangkabau.

Expedited batch processing and analysis of transposon insertions
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>With advances in sequencing technology, greater and greater amounts of eukaryotic genome data are becoming available. Often, large portions of these genomes consist of transposable elements, frequently accounting for 50% or more in vertebrates. Each transposable element family may have thousands or tens of thousands of individual copies within a given genome, and therefore it can take an exorbitant amount of time and effort to process data in a meaningful fashion.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>In order to combat this problem, we developed a set of bioinformatics techniques and programs to streamline the analysis. This includes a unique Perl script which automates the process of taking BLAST, Repeatmasker and similar data to extract and manipulate the hit sequences from the genome. This script, called Process_hits uses an object-oriented methodology to compile all hit locations from a given file for processing, organize this data into useable categories, and output it in multiple formats.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The program proved capable of handling large amounts of transposon data in an efficient fashion. It is equipped with a number of useful sub-functions, each of which is contained within its own sub-module to allow for greater expandability and as a foundation for future program design.</p
Reef fishes at all trophic levels respond positively to effective marine protected areas
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) offer a unique opportunity to test the assumption that fishing pressure affects some trophic groups more than others. Removal of larger predators through fishing is often suggested to have positive flow-on effects for some lower trophic groups, in which case protection from fishing should result in suppression of lower trophic groups as predator populations recover. We tested this by assessing differences in the trophic structure of reef fish communities associated with 79 MPAs and open-access sites worldwide, using a standardised quantitative dataset on reef fish community structure. The biomass of all major trophic groups (higher carnivores, benthic carnivores, planktivores and herbivores) was significantly greater (by 40% - 200%) in effective no-take MPAs relative to fished open-access areas. This effect was most pronounced for individuals in large size classes, but with no size class of any trophic group showing signs of depressed biomass in MPAs, as predicted from higher predator abundance. Thus, greater biomass in effective MPAs implies that exploitation on shallow rocky and coral reefs negatively affects biomass of all fish trophic groups and size classes. These direct effects of fishing on trophic structure appear stronger than any top down effects on lower trophic levels that would be imposed by intact predator populations. We propose that exploitation affects fish assemblages at all trophic levels, and that local ecosystem function is generally modified by fishing
The Chandra ACIS Survey of M33 (ChASeM33): The final source catalog
This study presents the final source catalog of the Chandra ACIS Survey of
M33 (ChASeM33). With a total exposure time of 1.4 Ms, ChASeM33 covers ~70% of
the D25 isophote (R\approx4kpc) of M33 and provides the deepest, most complete,
and detailed look at a spiral galaxy in X-rays. The source catalog includes 662
sources, reaches a limiting unabsorbed luminosity of ~2.4x10^(34) erg/s in the
0.35-8.0keV energy band, and contains source positions, source net counts,
fluxes and significances in several energy bands, and information on source
variability. The analysis challenges posed by ChASeM33 and the techniques
adopted to address these challenges are discussed. To constrain the nature of
the detected X-ray source, hardness ratios were constructed and spectra were
fit for 254 sources, followup MMT spectra of 116 sources were acquired, and
cross-correlations with previous X-ray catalogs and other multi-wavelength data
were generated. Based on this effort, 183 of the 662 ChASeM33 sources could be
identified. Finally, the luminosity function for the detected point sources as
well as the one for the X-ray binaries in M33 is presented. The luminosity
functions in the soft band (0.5-2.0 keV) and the hard band (2.0-8.0 keV) have a
limiting luminosity at the 90% completeness limit of 4.0x10^(34) erg/s and
1.6x10^(35) erg/s (for D=817kpc), respectively, which is significantly lower
than what was reported by previous X-ray binary population studies in galaxies
more distant than M33. The resulting distribution is consistent with a dominant
population of high mass X-ray binaries as would be expected for M33.Comment: 186 pages, 11 figures, 10 tables. Accepted for publication in the
