    When life gets in the way: Systematic review of life events, socioeconomic deprivation, and their impact on counselling and psychotherapy with children and adolescents

    Background Life events are recognised to link low socio‐economic status (SES) with impaired mental health. Despite attention to patients’ historical environmental circumstances in psychotherapeutic practice, events that occur over the course of counselling and psychotherapy (‘intercurrent’ events) seem to have received little attention in research. Method Life events were defined to include those that are chronic and severe, as well as minor, everyday occurrences. Outcomes were restricted to internalising problems related to depression and anxiety in child, or adolescent participants. Bibliographic databases and citations and review reference lists were searched, and relevant scholars were contacted. The conceptual and methodological nature of the literature is reported. Results This review included 42 studies. Intercurrent events varied in severity and duration. Events were most frequently measured using questionnaires. The same questionnaire was rarely used in more than one study, and questionnaires were often adapted for use for the study's purpose/population. Events included in analyses tended to be analysed as a mediator of change in psychiatric symptomatology, or an outcome of therapy. Conclusions Attention to intercurrent life events appears rare in psychotherapy research. This contributes to a systematic neglect of socio‐economic issues in psychotherapy research and arguably psychotherapy more generally. This neglect is exacerbated by a lack of agreed measures of life events, both intensive and routine in nature. Recommendations are made to improve attention to such events

    Weak Lensing Detection of Cl 1604+4304 at z = 0.90

    We present a weak lensing analysis of the high-redshift cluster Cl 1604+4304. At z=0.90, this is the highest-redshift cluster yet detected with weak lensing. It is also one of a sample of high-redshift, optically-selected clusters whose X-ray temperatures are lower than expected based on their velocity dispersions. Both the gas temperature and galaxy velocity dispersion are proxies for its mass, which can be determined more directly by a lensing analysis. Modeling the cluster as a singular isothermal sphere, we find that the mass contained within projected radius R is 3.69+-1.47 * (R/500 kpc) 10^14 M_odot. This corresponds to an inferred velocity dispersion of 1004+-199 km/s, which agrees well with the measured velocity dispersion of 989+98-76 km/s (Gal & Lubin 2004). These numbers are higher than the 575+110-85 km/s inferred from Cl 1604+4304 X-ray temperature, however all three velocity dispersion estimates are consistent within ~ 1.9 sigma.Comment: Revised version accepted for publication in AJ (January 2005). 2 added figures (6 figures total

    Large Scale Structure traced by Molecular Gas at High Redshift

    We present observations of redshifted CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) in a field containing an overdensity of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z=5.12. Our Australia Telescope Compact Array observations were centered between two spectroscopically-confirmed z=5.12 galaxies. We place upper limits on the molecular gas masses in these two galaxies of M(H_2) <1.7 x 10^10 M_sun and <2.9 x 10^9 M_sun (2 sigma), comparable to their stellar masses. We detect an optically-faint line emitter situated between the two LBGs which we identify as warm molecular gas at z=5.1245 +/- 0.0001. This source, detected in the CO(2-1) transition but undetected in CO(1-0), has an integrated line flux of 0.106 +/- 0.012 Jy km/s, yielding an inferred gas mass M(H_2)=(1.9 +/- 0.2) x 10^10 M_sun. Molecular line emitters without detectable counterparts at optical and infrared wavelengths may be crucial tracers of structure and mass at high redshift.Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    We present adaptive optics assisted, spatially resolved spectroscopy of a sample of nine Hα-selected galaxies at z = 0.84-2.23 drawn from the HiZELS narrow-band survey. These galaxies have star formation rates of 1-27 M⊙ yr-1 and are therefore representative of the typical high-redshift star-forming population. Our ˜kpc-scale resolution observations show that approximately half of the sample have dynamics suggesting that the ionized gas is in large, rotating discs. We model their velocity fields to infer the inclination-corrected, asymptotic rotational velocities. We use the absolute B-band magnitudes and stellar masses to investigate the evolution of the B-band and stellar-mass Tully-Fisher relationships. By combining our sample with a number of similar measurements from the literature, we show that, at fixed circular velocity, the stellar mass of star-forming galaxies has increased by a factor of 2.5 between z = 2 and 0, whilst the rest-frame B-band luminosity has decreased by a factor of ˜ 6 over the same period. Together, these demonstrate a change in mass-to-light ratio in the B band of Δ(M/LB)/(M/LB)z=0 ˜ 3.5 between z = 1.5 and 0, with most of the evolution occurring below z = 1. We also use the spatial variation of [N II]/Hα to show that the metallicity of the ionized gas in these galaxies declines monotonically with galactocentric radius, with an average Δ log(O/H)/ΔR = -0.027 ± 0.005 dex kpc-1. This gradient is consistent with predictions for high-redshift disc galaxies from cosmologically based hydrodynamic simulations

    The IRAM Plateau de Bure mm interferometer and deep K-band imaging have been used to identify the brightest submm source detected in the Lockman field of the UK 8mJy SCUBA survey. The near infrared counterpart is an extended (20-30kpc), clumpy, and extremely red object. The spectral energy distribution suggests it to be a dusty star forming object at a redshift of about 3 (2-4). Its star formation rate and near-infrared properties are consistent with Lockman850.1 being a massive elliptical in formation.Comment: 4 ps/eps figures. To appear in A&

    Fact: Many SCUBA galaxies harbour AGNs

    Deep SCUBA surveys have uncovered a large population of ultra-luminous galaxies at z>1. These sources are often assumed to be starburst galaxies, but there is growing evidence that a substantial fraction host an AGN (i.e., an accreting super-massive black hole). We present here possibly the strongest evidence for this viewpoint to date: the combination of ultra-deep X-ray observations (the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North) and deep optical spectroscopic data. We argue that upward of 38% of bright (f850um>=5mJy) SCUBA galaxies host an AGN, a fraction of which are obscured QSOs (i.e., L_X>3x10^{44} erg/s). However, using evidence from a variety of analyses, we argue that in almost all cases the AGNs are not bolometrically important (i.e., <20%). Thus, star formation appears to dominate their bolometric output. A substantial fraction of bright SCUBA galaxies show evidence for binary AGN activity.     A close look into an intermediate redshift galaxy using STIS

    We present a detailed view of a galaxy at z=0.4 which is part of a large database of intermediate redshifts using high resolution images. We used the STIS parallel images and spectra to identify the object and obtain the redshift. The high resolution STIS image (0.05'') enabled us to analyse the internal structures of this galaxy. A bar along the major axis and hot-spots of star formation separated by 0.37'' (1.6 kpc) are found along the inner region of the galaxy. The analysis of the morphology of faint galaxies like this one is an important step towards estimating the epoch of formation of the Hubble classification sequence.Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics Letter - accepte

    An ISOCAM survey through gravitationally lensing galaxy clusters. III. New results from mid-infrared observations of th e cluster Abell 2219

    The massive cluster of galaxies Abell 2219 (z = 0.228) was observed at 14.3 Ό\mum with the Infrared Space Observatory and results were published by Barvainis et al. (1999). These observations have been reanalyzed using a method specifically designed for the detection of faint sources that had been applied to other clusters. Five new sources were detected and the resulting cumulative total of ten sources all have optical counterparts. The mid-infrared sources are identified with three cluster members, three foreground galaxies, an Extremely Red Object, a star and two galaxies of unknown redshift. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the galaxies are fit with models from a selection, using the program GRASIL. Best-fits are obtained, in general, with models of galaxies with ongoing star formation. For three cluster members the infrared luminosities derived from the model SEDs are between ~5.7x10^10 Lsun and 1.4x10^11 Lsun, corresponding to infrared star formation rates between 10 and 24 Msun yr^-1. The two cluster galaxies that have optical classifications are in the Butcher-Oemler region of the color-magnitude diagramme. The three foreground galaxies have infrared luminosities between 1.5x10^10 Lsun and 9.4x10^10 Lsun yielding infrared star formation rates between 3 and 16 Msun yr^-1. Two of the foreground galaxies are located in two foreground galaxy enhancements (Boschin et al. 2004). Including Abell 2219, six distant clusters of galaxies have been mapped with ISOCAM and luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) have been found in three of them.
