In Search of the Nordic Working Life Model; Introduction to the Thematic Issue
The theme of this issue is âin search of the Nordic working life model.â The main reason for choosing this theme is related to the widespread observation that several features of the Nordic institutions of work have been considered atypical when compared with those prevailing in other advanced industrial societies. We are not, of course, the first to make such an observation, and much effort has been spent in order to sort out what we actually talk about when we apply a term like the Nordic model. However, in spite of this effort, we are still toiling with the question of what it is that entitles us to talk about a specific order. Furthermore, if it really exists, will it be able to survive in the face of far-reaching changes that may be expected to take place in the coming decades? On what kinds of resources may it be based in the future? In the following, we will present some speculations upon such questions while distinguishing between qualities at the societal and organizational level. This may, of course, be considered an artificial differentiation since organizations are a part of society. Nonetheless, we choose to apply this distinction based on analytical reasons. In this way we hope to better illustrate how these entities are linked together in a mutual relationship, thus contributing both to stability and to change. At the end of the introduction, we will give a brief orientation of the content of this issue (...

Lysgaardâs theory of the worker collectivity is still an influential classic in Scandinavian working-life research. The study was carried out in a pulp and paper mill in the late 1950s and we have returned to the plant to find out what has happened to the worker collectivity. Through observations at the workplace and interviews with workers, engineers and managers, as well as having access to data from the 1950s and 1980s, we are able to map the development of technology, work organization and the collectivity. On this basis, we suggest two changes to Lysgaardâs theory. One is to conceptually split what Lysgaard called the technical/economic system into two relatively autonomous systems â the technical and the economic, respectively. The other is to analyse the way in which the collectivity has infiltrated the technical, but not the economic system.publishedVersio
Factors influencing employee perceptions in lean transformations
The purpose of the study was to investigate employee perceptions during a lean transformation1. The
combination of case study and survey methodologies was used to define elements influencing the perceived lean
success of shop floor employees. According to our findings, belief, commitment, work method and
communication all have a considerable direct impact on workersâ perceptions of lean success. However, their
effects are very different based on the scope and focus of changes that is influenced by process characteristics.
Perceptions regarding successful lean transformation during a moderate reorganisation of the companyâs welding
plant, where mainly males work, are affected only by commitment and work method, whereas the deep
reorganisation of the sewing plant (populated by female employees) is only influenced by belief and
communication
