Treatment of Partial Deafness: The Polish School in World Science

Introduction of the method of treatment of partial deafness with cochlear implants has given many patients the previously inaccessible chance to (re)enter the world of sounds. This method of treatment had been developed and introduced to the world’s medicine by H. Skarżyński in 2002, after the extensive research since 1997. This task involved creation of a multispecialty team of experts, development of a special surgical method, and concept of the therapy reflecting on the world largest number of hearing improving surgeries being performed for 13 years averaging 15,000 otosurgical procedures yearly. Health Security in the White Book on National Security of the Republic of Poland – a Review of Provisions

The paper reviews the provisions of the White Book on National Security of the Republic of Poland. It states that the issue of health security is not given adequate significance there. The accessibility of health services is considered, in general, solely in terms of their availability. The assumptions concerning the concept of providing the number of beds required in a state of threat to national security and in time of war do not take into account the current socio-economic conditions and need to be reviewed. The conclusions emphasize the dilemmas that emerge as a result of the unilateral promotion of a single category of national security, that is military security, in the context of ensuring health security

Bezpieczeństwo narodowe Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej – aspekty logistyczne

The article presents the diversity of national security conditions and demonstrates the need for the study of its logistical aspects. There are presented American views on the role of logistics in ensuring national security. The paper presents and assesses the basic content of the documents relating to the national security of the Republic of Poland for content logistics issues. The Polish Committee of National Liberation’s decree on the agricultural reform of the 1944 on the example of the northern Masovia – the district of Pultusk

The Agricultural Reform from of 1944 drastically changed the agricultural attitude in Poland. It had been previously announced in the Manifesto from 22nd of July by the Polish Committee of National Liberation. There were three main reasons in favour of the reform. First of all, the consolidation of power by the country folk through the closedown of the squirearchy. Secondly, the territorial estate of huge tracts of land. Finally, its endorsement by both peasants and farm labourers. In order to achieve the required goals some regulations were introduced to speed up the process of implementation. The District of Pultusk is the chosen example of the changes made, which were to rapidly spread over the agricultural landscape of post-war Poland. The changes made were visible and especially so in North Masovia where about 25 thousand hectares of the land was divided into smaller plots, including arable land, forests and wastelands. The largest group of beneficiaries were represented by the landless and smallholders. Additionally, many families migrated to the so-called Regained Lands. Comprehensive approach to the National Network of Teleaudiology in World Hearing Center in Kajetany, Poland

To improve the quality of patient care, the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing (IPPH) developed and implemented into the clinical practice in 2009 the National Network of Teleaudiology (NNT). NNT is a specialized network allowing the use of the internet and modern IT tools to provide medical care, rehabilitation and technical support for patients visiting a one of the affiliated policlinics of the Institute. This was the basis for the development and implementation of the implant fitting procedure, using modern internet and telediagnostic technologies - telefiting. This procedure, implemented in several centers throughout the country and aboard, solves the growing need for constant specialist care, check-ups and periodic reviews of speech processors. Clinical engineers, through teleconferencing links, can carry out the whole process of assessing and fitting the cochlear implant assisted by auxiliary staff of the cooperating center. Material of this study consisted of 316 cochlear implant users scheduled for telefitting in one of 8 centers selected for this study. Each patient underwent a teleconsultation procedure. After telefitting the patient was presented with a questionnaire consisting of questions relating to the quality and time effectiveness of telefitting and the preparation process, assessment of the ease of contact with the audiologist, the sense of security and calm during the session, and an overall assessment of its usefulness as an alternative to different kinds of standard visits. Significantly smaller distances that have to be overcome by patients to cooperating centers have significantly reduced the travel time. Description of two new species of Hypogastrura Bourlet, 1839 of the H. crassaegranulata group (Collembola: Hypogastruridae) from the Caucasus, with notes on some related species

A revision of ‘Hypogastrura crassaegranulata’ material from the eastern Palaearctic was done as all records before 2006 referred to H. crassaegranulata have become unclear after recent redescription of the species. It shown that among four forms mentioned under this name by Babenko et al. (1994) none belongs to true H. crassaegranulata. Two of these forms are in fact species new to science described and illustrated below as H. tepli sp. n. and H. aushensis sp. n. (Russia, Northern Caucasus). Two others appear to be H. franconiana (Stach, 1949) and H. szeptyckii Skarżyński, 2006 firstly recorded from Kazakhstan (Tien Shan) and Ukraine (Carpathians), respectively

Hearing Screening around the World

Newborn hearing screening programs for congenital disorders and chronic diseases are expanding worldwide, and children are identified at the earliest possible stage. However, the practice is limited or absent in much of the developing world, such as Africa. Recent epidemiological studies show significant increase of hearing impairments in school-age children (around 20 in 100). Hearing disorders disturb the child’s perception of sound, as well as the development of speech which in consequence negatively affects the child relations in society. The early detection of hearing impairments in children enables the effective implementation of medical and rehabilitation procedures or preventive treatment. According to the guidelines of the European Scientific Consensus on Hearing, the detection and treatment of hearing disorders in early school-age children are of the highest importance. That idea was one of the priorities during Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union (the second half of 2011). The Institute team, in collaboration with numerous national centers, has laid the groundwork for screening programs and developed methods, procedures, and devices for carrying them out. In addition, the Institute was the coordinator and producer of many programs. Based on this, two screening models have been created—newborn and school-age children

Poznańskie lata Henryka Ułaszyna

Henryk Ułaszyn (1874–1956), linguist, specialist in Slavic and Polish languages and literatures, disciple of Baudouin de Courtenay and a professor of Poznań University, was not only a scholar but also a prominent social activist and freethinker of the interwar period. His liberal and anticlerical views, overtly expressed in public talks and lectures, the articles published in the press and in pamphlets, as well as his uncompromising and hard hitting polemics in his public addresses in defence of science and reason, led ultimately to a number of conflicts with the local academic community. Ułaszyn was attacked by Catholic and right-wing press, he was even physically assaulted. The article, researched and based on archival material, focuses on this particular aspect in his biography
