Shape of an elastica under growth restricted by friction
We investigate the quasi-static growth of elastic fibers in the presence of
dry or viscous friction. An unusual form of destabilization beyond a critical
length is described. In order to characterize this phenomenon, a new definition
of stability against infinitesimal perturbations over finite time intervals is
proposed and a semi-analytical method for the determination of the critical
length is developed. The post-critical behavior of the system is studied by
using an appropriate numerical scheme based on variational methods. We find
post-critical shapes for uniformly distributed as well as for concentrated
growth and demonstrate convergence to a figure-8 shape for large lengths when
self-crossing is allowed. Comparison with simple physical experiments yields
reasonable accuracy of the theoretical predictions
How river rocks round: resolving the shape-size paradox
River-bed sediments display two universal downstream trends: fining, in which
particle size decreases; and rounding, where pebble shapes evolve toward
ellipsoids. Rounding is known to result from transport-induced abrasion;
however many researchers argue that the contribution of abrasion to downstream
fining is negligible. This presents a paradox: downstream shape change
indicates substantial abrasion, while size change apparently rules it out. Here
we use laboratory experiments and numerical modeling to show quantitatively
that pebble abrasion is a curvature-driven flow problem. As a consequence,
abrasion occurs in two well-separated phases: first, pebble edges rapidly round
without any change in axis dimensions until the shape becomes entirely convex;
and second, axis dimensions are then slowly reduced while the particle remains
convex. Explicit study of pebble shape evolution helps resolve the shape-size
paradox by reconciling discrepancies between laboratory and field studies, and
enhances our ability to decipher the transport history of a river rock.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Constraints on the Soft Power Efforts of Authoritarian States: The Case of the 2015 Military Parade in Beijing
Is it possible for authoritarian states such as China, Russia, and Iran to combine the soft power narratives directed primarily towards an international audience with the narratives directed primarily towards a domestic audience that are aimed at maintaining regime security? To investigate this question, this article analyses the 2015 military parade in Beijing, using this case to highlight and discuss the constraints on Chinese leadersâ efforts to project soft power. The key finding is that soft power will continue to be the weak link in Chinaâs pursuit of a great power position and status as long as what continues to count as âChineseâ is defined in opposition to hostile âothersâ and the humiliation narrative continues to function as the central identity marker in the party-led construction of national identity (the âusâ)
Automatic deployment of interoperable legacy code services
The Grid Execution Management for Legacy Code Architecture (GEMLCA) enables
exposing legacy applications as Grid services without re-engineering the code, or even requiring access to the source files. The integration of current GT3 and GT4 based GEMLCA implementations with the P-GRADE Grid portal allows the creation,
execution and visualisation of complex Grid workflows composed of legacy and nonlegacy components. However, the deployment of legacy codes and mapping their
execution to Grid resources is currently done manually. This paper outlines how
GEMLCA can be extended with automatic service deployment, brokering, and
information system support. A conceptual architecture for an Automatic Deployment Service (ADS) and for an x-Service Interoperability Layer (XSILA) are introduced explaining how these mechanisms support desired features in future releases of
GEMLCA
Legacy code support for production grids
In order to improve reliability and to deal with the high complexity of existing middleware solutions, today's production Grid systems restrict the services to be deployed on their resources. On the other hand end-users require a wide range of value added services to fully utilize these resources. This paper describes a solution how legacy code support is offered as third party service for production Grids. The introduced solution, based on the Grid Execution Management for Legacy Code Architecture (GEMLCA), do not require the deployment of additional applications on the Grid resources, or any extra effort from Grid system administrators. The Structure of Hyperalkaline Aqueous Solutions Containing High Concentrations of Gallium - a Solution X-ray Diffraction and Computational Study
Highly concentrated alkaline NaOH/Ga(OH)3 solutions with 1.18 M Ga(III)T 2.32 M and 2.4 M NaOHT 4.9 M (where the subscript T denotes total or analytical concentrations) have been prepared and investigated by solution X-ray diffraction and also by ab initio quantum chemical calculations. The data obtained are consistent with the presence of only one predominant Ga(III)-bearing species in these solutions, that is the tetrahedral hydroxo complex Ga(OH)4â. This finding is in stark contrast to that found for Al(III)-containing solutions of similar concentrations, in which, besides the monomeric complex, an oxo-bridged dimer was also found to form. From the solution X-ray diffraction measurements, the formation of the dimeric (OH)3GaâOâGa(OH)32â could not unambiguously be shown, however, from the comparison of experimental IR, Raman and 71Ga NMR spectra with calculated ones, its formation can be safely excluded. Moreover, higher mononuclear stepwise hydroxo complexes, like Ga(OH)63â, that have been claimed to exist by others in the literature, was not possible to experimentally detect in these solutions with any of the spectroscopic techniques used
