    Distributional Changes in the Gender Wage Gap

    This paper analyzes changes in wage differentials between white men and white women over the period 1993–2006 across the entire wage distribution using Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) data. We decompose distributional changes in the gender wage gap to assess the contribution of observed characteristics measuring individual productivity. We fi nd that the gender wage gap narrowed by more than 13 percent at the lowest decile and by less than 4 percent at the highest decile. The decomposition results indicate that changes in the gender wage gap are mainly attributable to changes in educational attainment at the top of the wage distribution, while a sizeable part of the changes is due to work history changes at the bottom. Our findings suggest that the educational success of women could reduce the gender wage gap at the bottom of the distribution both before and during the 1990s but did not trigger a strong decline at the top of the distribution until today.Gender wage gap; decomposition analysis; unconditional quantile regression

    Abstract: This paper analyzes the relationship between individuals’ locus of control and their savings behavior, i.e. wealth accumulation, savings rates, and portfolio choices. Locus of control is a psychological concept that captures individuals’ beliefs about the controllability of life events and is a key component of self-control. We find that households with an internal reference person save more both in terms of levels and as a percentage of their permanent incomes. Although the locus-of-control gap in savings rates is largest among rich households, the gap in wealth accumulation is particularly large for poor households. Finally, households with an internal reference person and average net worth hold significantly less financial wealth, but significantly more pension wealth, than otherwise similar households with an external reference person

    Functional characterization of recombinant chloroplast signal recognition particle

    The signal recognition particle (SRP) is a ubiquitous system for the targeting of membrane and secreted proteins. The chloroplast SRP (cpSRP) is unique among SRPs in that it possesses no RNA and is functional in post-translational as well as co-translational targeting. We have expressed and purified the two components of the Arabidopsis thaliana chloroplast signal recognition particle (cpSRP) involved in post-translational transport: cpSRP54 and the chloroplast-specific protein, cpSRP43. Recombinant cpSRP supports the efficient in vitro insertion of pea preLhcb1 into isolated thylakoid membranes. Recombinant cpSRP is a stable heterodimer with a molecular mass of approximately 100 kDa as determined by analytical ultracentrifugation, gel filtration analysis, and dynamic light scattering. The interactions of the components of the recombinant heterodimer and pea preLhcb1 were probed using an immobilized peptide library (pepscan) approach. These data confirm two previously reported interactions with the L18 region and the third transmembrane helix of Lhcb1 and suggest that the interface of the cpSRP43 and cpSRP54 proteins is involved in substrate binding. Additionally, cpSRP components are shown to recognize peptides from the cleavable, N-terminal chloroplast transit peptide of preLhcb1. The interaction of cpSRP43 with cpSRP54 was probed in a similar experiment with a peptide library representing cpSPR54. The C terminus of cpSRP54 is essential for the formation of the stable cpSRP complex and cpSPR43 interacts with distinct regions of the M domain of cpSRP54.</p

    Packham's Triumph Pears (Pyrus communis L.) Post-Harvest Treatment during Cold Storage Based on Chitosan and Rue Essential Oil

    Pears (Pyrus communis L.) cv. Packham's Triumph are very traditional for human consumption, but pear is a highly perishable climacteric fruit with a short shelf-life affected by several diseases with a microbial origin. In this study, a protective effect on the quality properties of pears was evidenced after the surface application of chitosan-Ruta graveolens essential oil coatings (CS + RGEO) in four different concentrations (0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 %, v/v) during 21 days of storage under 18 °C. After 21 days of treatment, a weight loss reduction of 10% (from 40.2 ± 5.3 to 20.3 ± 3.9) compared to the uncoated pears was evident with CS + RGEO 0.5%. All the fruits' physical-chemical properties evidenced a protective effect of the coatings. The maturity index increased for all the treatments. However, the pears with CS + RGEO 1.5% were lower (70.21) than the uncoated fruits (98.96). The loss of firmness for the uncoated samples was higher compared to the coated samples. The pears' most excellent mechanical resistance was obtained with CS + RGEO 0.5% after 21 days of storage, both for compression resistance (7.42 kPa) and force (22.7 N). Microbiological studies demonstrated the protective power of the coatings. Aerobic mesophilic bacteria and molds were significantly reduced (in 3 Log CFU/g compared to control) using 15 µL/mL of RGEO, without affecting consumer perception.     Genetics and beyond - the transcriptome of human monocytes and disease susceptibility

    BACKGROUND: Variability of gene expression in human may link gene sequence variability and phenotypes; however, non-genetic variations, alone or in combination with genetics, may also influence expression traits and have a critical role in physiological and disease processes. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To get better insight into the overall variability of gene expression, we assessed the transcriptome of circulating monocytes, a key cell involved in immunity-related diseases and atherosclerosis, in 1,490 unrelated individuals and investigated its association with >675,000 SNPs and 10 common cardiovascular risk factors. Out of 12,808 expressed genes, 2,745 expression quantitative trait loci were detected (P<5.78x10(-12)), most of them (90%) being cis-modulated. Extensive analyses showed that associations identified by genome-wide association studies of lipids, body mass index or blood pressure were rarely compatible with a mediation by monocyte expression level at the locus. At a study-wide level (P<3.9x10(-7)), 1,662 expression traits (13.0%) were significantly associated with at least one risk factor. Genome-wide interaction analyses suggested that genetic variability and risk factors mostly acted additively on gene expression. Because of the structure of correlation among expression traits, the variability of risk factors could be characterized by a limited set of independent gene expressions which may have biological and clinical relevance. For example expression traits associated with cigarette smoking were more strongly associated with carotid atherosclerosis than smoking itself. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: This study demonstrates that the monocyte transcriptome is a potent integrator of genetic and non-genetic influences of relevance for disease pathophysiology and risk assessment

    Association of glycated hemoglobin A1c levels with cardiovascular outcomes in the general population: results from the BiomarCaRE (Biomarker for Cardiovascular Risk Assessment in Europe) consortium

    Background: Biomarkers may contribute to improved cardiovascular risk estimation. Glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is used to monitor the quality of diabetes treatment. Its strength of association with cardiovascular outcomes in the general population remains uncertain. This study aims to assess the association of HbA1c with cardiovascular outcomes in the general population. Methods: Data from six prospective population-based cohort studies across Europe comprising 36,180 participants were analyzed. HbA1c was evaluated in conjunction with classical cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) for association with cardiovascular mortality, cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence, and overall mortality in subjects without diabetes (N = 32,496) and with diabetes (N = 3684). Results: Kaplan\u2013Meier curves showed higher event rates with increasing HbA1c levels (log-rank-test: p &lt; 0.001). Cox regression analysis revealed significant associations between HbA1c (in mmol/mol) in the total study population and the examined outcomes. Thus, a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.16 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02\u20131.31, p = 0.02) for cardiovascular mortality, 1.13 (95% CI 1.03\u20131.24, p = 0.01) for CVD incidence, and 1.09 (95% CI 1.02\u20131.17, p = 0.01) for overall mortality was observed per 10&nbsp;mmol/mol increase in HbA1c. The association with CVD incidence and overall mortality was also observed in study participants without diabetes with increased HbA1c levels (HR 1.12; 95% CI 1.01\u20131.25, p = 0.04) and HR 1.10; 95% CI 1.01\u20131.20, p = 0.02) respectively. HbA1c cut-off values of 39.9&nbsp;mmol/mol (5.8%), 36.6&nbsp;mmol/mol (5.5%), and 38.8&nbsp;mmol/mol (5.7%) for cardiovascular mortality, CVD incidence, and overall mortality, showed also an increased risk. Conclusions: HbA1c is independently associated with cardiovascular mortality, overall mortality and cardiovascular disease in the general European population. A mostly monotonically increasing relationship was observed between HbA1c levels and outcomes. Elevated HbA1c levels were associated with cardiovascular disease incidence and overall mortality in participants without diabetes underlining the importance of HbA1c levels in the overall population

    Relations between lipoprotein(a) concentrations, LPA genetic variants, and the risk of mortality in patients with established coronary heart disease: a molecular and genetic association study

    Background: Lipoprotein(a) concentrations in plasma are associated with cardiovascular risk in the general population. Whether lipoprotein(a) concentrations or LPA genetic variants predict long-term mortality in patients with established coronary heart disease remains less clear. Methods: We obtained data from 3313 patients with established coronary heart disease in the Ludwigshafen Risk and Cardiovascular Health (LURIC) study. We tested associations of tertiles of lipoprotein(a) concentration in plasma and two LPA single-nucleotide polymorphisms ([SNPs] rs10455872 and rs3798220) with all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality by Cox regression analysis and with severity of disease by generalised linear modelling, with and without adjustment for age, sex, diabetes diagnosis, systolic blood pressure, BMI, smoking status, estimated glomerular filtration rate, LDL-cholesterol concentration, and use of lipid-lowering therapy. Results for plasma lipoprotein(a) concentrations were validated in five independent studies involving 10 195 patients with established coronary heart disease. Results for genetic associations were replicated through large-scale collaborative analysis in the GENIUS-CHD consortium, comprising 106 353 patients with established coronary heart disease and 19 332 deaths in 22 studies or cohorts. Findings: The median follow-up was 9·9 years. Increased severity of coronary heart disease was associated with lipoprotein(a) concentrations in plasma in the highest tertile (adjusted hazard radio [HR] 1·44, 95% CI 1·14–1·83) and the presence of either LPA SNP (1·88, 1·40–2·53). No associations were found in LURIC with all-cause mortality (highest tertile of lipoprotein(a) concentration in plasma 0·95, 0·81–1·11 and either LPA SNP 1·10, 0·92–1·31) or cardiovascular mortality (0·99, 0·81–1·2 and 1·13, 0·90–1·40, respectively) or in the validation studies. Interpretation: In patients with prevalent coronary heart disease, lipoprotein(a) concentrations and genetic variants showed no associations with mortality. We conclude that these variables are not useful risk factors to measure to predict progression to death after coronary heart disease is established.     Narrative review of Ebstein's anomaly beyond childhood: imaging, surgery, and future perspectives

    Ebstein's anomaly is a rare congenital heart disease with malformation of the tricuspid valve and myopathy of the right ventricle. The septal and inferior leaflets adhere to the endocardium due to failure of delamination. This leads to apical displacement of their hinge points with a shift of the functional tricuspid valve annulus towards the right ventricular outflow tract with a possibly restrictive orifice. Frequently, a coaptation gap yields tricuspid valve regurgitation and over time the "atrialized" portion of the right ventricle may dilate. The highly variable anatomy determines the clinical presentation ranging from asymptomatic to very severe with need for early operation. Echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging are the most important diagnostic modalities to assess the tricuspid valve as well as ventricular morphology and function. While medical management of asymptomatic patients can be effective for many years, surgical intervention is indicated before development of significant right ventricular dilatation or dysfunction. Onset of symptoms and arrhythmias are further indications for surgery. Modified cone reconstruction of the tricuspid valve is the state-of-the-art approach yielding the best results for most patients. Alternative procedures for select cases include tricuspid valve replacement and bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt depending on patient age and other individual characteristics. Long-term survival after surgery is favorable but rehospitalization and reoperation remain significant issues. Further studies are warranted to identify the optimal surgical strategy and timing before adverse right ventricular remodeling occurs. It is this article's objective to provide a comprehensive review of current literature and an overview on the management of Ebstein's Anomaly. It focuses on imaging, cardiac surgery, and outcome. Additionally, a brief insight into arrhythmias and their management is given. The "future perspectives" summarize open questions and fields of future research.Thoracic Surger
