    Retelling racialized violence, remaking white innocence: the politics of interlocking oppressions in transgender day of remembrance

    Transgender Day of Remembrance has become a significant political event among those resisting violence against gender-variant persons. Commemorated in more than 250 locations worldwide, this day honors individuals who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. However, by focusing on transphobia as the definitive cause of violence, this ritual potentially obscures the ways in which hierarchies of race, class, and sexuality constitute such acts. Taking the Transgender Day of Remembrance/Remembering Our Dead project as a case study for considering the politics of memorialization, as well as tracing the narrative history of the Fred F. C. Martinez murder case in Colorado, the author argues that deracialized accounts of violence produce seemingly innocent White witnesses who can consume these spectacles of domination without confronting their own complicity in such acts. The author suggests that remembrance practices require critical rethinking if we are to confront violence in more effective ways.     Limited Hip Flexion and Internal Rotation Resulting From Early Hip Impingement Conflict on Anterior Metaphysis of Patients With Untreated Severe SCFE Using 3D Modelling.

    INTRODUCTION Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is the most common hip disorder in adolescent patients that can result in complex 3 dimensional (3D)-deformity and hip preservation surgery (eg, in situ pinning or proximal femoral osteotomy) is often performed. But there is little information about location of impingement.Purpose/Questions: The purpose of this study was to evaluate (1) impingement-free hip flexion and internal rotation (IR), (2) frequency of impingement in early flexion (30 to 60 degrees), and (3) location of acetabular and femoral impingement in IR in 90 degrees of flexion (IRF-90 degrees) and in maximal flexion for patients with untreated severe SCFE using preoperative 3D-computed tomography (CT) for impingement simulation. METHODS A retrospective study involving 3D-CT scans of 18 patients (21 hips) with untreated severe SCFE (slip angle>60 degrees) was performed. Preoperative CT scans were used for bone segmentation of preoperative patient-specific 3D models. Three patients (15%) had bilateral SCFE. Mean age was 13±2 (10 to 16) years and 67% were male patients (86% unstable slip, 81% chronic slip). The contralateral hips of 15 patients with unilateral SCFE were evaluated (control group). Validated software was used for 3D impingement simulation (equidistant method). RESULTS (1) Impingement-free flexion (46±32 degrees) and IRF-90 degrees (-17±18 degrees) were significantly (P<0.001) decreased in untreated severe SCFE patients compared with contralateral side (122±9 and 36±11 degrees).(2) Frequency of impingement was significantly (P<0.001) higher in 30 and 60 degrees flexion (48% and 71%) of patients with severe SCFE compared with control group (0%).(3) Acetabular impingement conflict was located anterior-superior (SCFE patients), mostly 12 o'clock (50%) in IRF-90 degrees (70% on 2 o'clock for maximal flexion). Femoral impingement was located on anterior-superior to anterior-inferior femoral metaphysis (between 2 and 6 o'clock, 40% on 3 o'clock and 40% on 5 o'clock) in IRF-90 degrees and on anterior metaphysis (40% on 3 o'clock) in maximal flexion and frequency was significantly (P<0.001) different compared with control group. CONCLUSION Severe SCFE patients have limited hip flexion and IR due to early hip impingement using patient-specific preoperative 3D models. Because of the large variety of hip motion, individual evaluation is recommended to plan the osseous correction for severe SCFE patients. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III

    The Initial Mass Function of Low-Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs in Young Clusters

    We have obtained images of the Trapezium Cluster (140" x 140"; 0.3 pc x 0.3 pc) with the Hubble Space Telescope Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). Combining these data with new ground-based K-band spectra (R=800) and existing spectral types and photometry and the models of D'Antona & Mazzitelli, we find that the distributions of ages of comparable samples of stars in the Trapezium, rho Oph, and IC 348 indicate median ages of \~0.4 Myr for the first two regions and ~1-2 Myr for the latter. The low-mass IMFs in these sites of clustered star formation are similar over a wide range of stellar densities and other environmental conditions. With current data, we cannot rule out modest variations in the substellar mass functions among these clusters. We then make the best estimate of the true form of the IMF in the Trapezium by using the evolutionary models of Baraffe et al. and an empirically adjusted temperature scale and compare this mass function to recent results for the Pleiades and the field. All of these data are consistent with an IMF that is flat or rises slowly from the substellar regime to about 0.6 Msun, and then rolls over into a power law that continues from about 1 Msun to higher masses with a slope similar to or somewhat larger than the Salpeter value of 1.35. For the Trapezium, this behavior holds from our completeness limit of ~0.02 Msun and probably, after a modest completeness correction, even from 0.01-0.02 Msun. These data include ~50 likely brown dwarfs.     We perform a review of various approaches to the implementation of quantum memories, with an emphasis on activities within the quantum memory sub-project of the EU Integrated Project "Qubit Applications". We begin with a brief overview over different applications for quantum memories and different types of quantum memories. We discuss the most important criteria for assessing quantum memory performance and the most important physical requirements. Then we review the different approaches represented in "Qubit Applications" in some detail. They include solid-state atomic ensembles, NV centers, quantum dots, single atoms, atomic gases and optical phonons in diamond.     What does a universal IMF imply about star formation?

    We show that the same initial mass function (IMF) can result from very different modes of star formation from very similar underlying core and/or system mass functions. In particular, we show that the canonical IMF can be recovered from very similar system mass functions, but with very different mass ratio distributions within those systems. This is a consequence of the basically log-normal shapes of all of the distributions. We also show that the relationships between the shapes of the core, system, and stellar mass functions may not be trivial.     AMI Large Array radio continuum observations of Spitzer c2d small clouds and cores

    We perform deep 1.8 cm radio continuum imaging towards thirteen protostellar regions selected from the Spitzer c2d small clouds and cores programme at high resolution (25") in order to detect and quantify the cm-wave emission from deeply embedded young protostars. Within these regions we detect fifteen compact radio sources which we identify as radio protostars including two probable new detections. The sample is in general of low bolometric luminosity and contains several of the newly detected VeLLO sources. We determine the 1.8 cm radio luminosity to bolometric luminosity correlation, L_rad -L_bol, for the sample and discuss the nature of the radio emission in terms of the available sources of ionized gas. We also investigate the L_rad-L_IR correlation and suggest that radio flux density may be used as a proxy for the internal luminosity of low luminosity protostars.Comment: submitted MNRA

    Local Group Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies: II. Stellar Kinematics to Large Radii in NGC 147 and NGC 185

    We present kinematic and metallicity profiles for the M31 dwarf elliptical (dE) satellite galaxies NGC 147 and NGC 185. The profiles represent the most extensive spectroscopic radial coverage for any dE galaxy, extending to a projected distance of eight half-light radii (8 r_eff = 14'). We achieve this coverage via Keck/DEIMOS multislit spectroscopic observations of 520 and 442 member red giant branch stars in NGC 147 and NGC 185, respectively. In contrast to previous studies, we find that both dEs have significant internal rotation. We measure a maximum rotational velocity of 17+/-2 km/s for NGC 147 and 15+/-5 km/s for NGC 185. The velocity dispersions decrease gently with radius with an average dispersion of 16+/-1 km/s for NGC 147 and 24+/-1 km/s for NGC 185. Both dEs have internal metallicity dispersions of 0.5 dex, but show no evidence for a radial metallicity gradient. We construct two-integral axisymmetric dynamical models and find that the observed kinematical profiles cannot be explained without modest amounts of non-baryonic dark matter. We measure central mass-to-light ratios of ML_V = 4.2+/-0.6 and ML_V = 4.6+/-0.6 for NGC 147 and NGC 185, respectively. Both dE galaxies are consistent with being primarily flattened by their rotational motions, although some anisotropic velocity dispersion is needed to fully explain their observed shapes. The velocity profiles of all three Local Group dEs (NGC 147, NGC 185 and NGC 205) suggest that rotation is more prevalent in the dE galaxy class than previously assumed, but is often manifest only at several times the effective radius. Since all dEs outside the Local Group have been probed to only inside the effective radius, this opens the door for formation mechanisms in which dEs are transformed or stripped versions of gas-rich rotating progenitor galaxies.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. accepted to A
