Genetic diversity and structure of the portuguese pear (Pyrus communis L.) germplasm

    Get PDF
A rich heritage of traditional pear varieties is kept in national Portuguese collections. Out of these varieties, “Rocha” dominates national pear production. Although a noticeable phenotypic variation among clones of this variety has been reported, little is known about its genetic variability, as to date molecular studies have been performed on a single “Rocha” clone. Eleven Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) markers were used to assess the genetic diversity of 130 local cultivars, 80 of them being “Rocha” clones. The results allowed the di erentiation of 75 genotypes of which 29 are “Rocha”. Three synonyms groups and four homonymous groups of other local varieties were confirmed. A Bayesian model-based clustering approach identified two distinct clusters. Using flow cytometry, six cultivars were found to be triploids. These results show high genetic variability among “Rocha” clones. In conclusion, there is a need for di erent “Rocha” clones to be preserved to enable the correct selection of the multiplication materialinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Construction of a singular academic path and its dialogues with Occupational Therapy

The text of this essay comes from the writing of the academic memorial prepared to meet the norms and internal procedures of the Federal University of São Carlos - UFSCar in the accomplishment of the public contest for promotion to class E - Full Professor of the Career of the Higher Magisterium of the Department of Occupational Therapy of UFSCar. I understood the moment of writing the memorial as an opportunity to express the singularity of my journey and I seek to socialize it here. I dedicated my writing to the people with whom I live and lived through the meaningful interactions that enabled my engagement in academic life. I understand this essay as an opportunity to divulge a personal narrative that is fruit of introspection, reflection, recovery, and recording of facts, composition of a bank of memories about my personal experience, recognition of advances and difficulties in the dialogue with the scientific field, thanks to the people, but above all, the resignification of my academic trajectory, at this moment with more than 30 years at UFSCar. I chose to elaborate this record based on personal and academic experiences through associations of the aspects of family life with the choice of profession, of the formative processes with the course of the professional life and of the resignification of the academic experiences

Introduction: Oral mucositis (OM) has been considered one of the most feared collateral effects of oncological treatments. Some therapies have been used, such as light-emitting diode (LED), with promising results, but with no sufficient evidence in the literature. Objective: Our study aimed to evaluate, by clinical and histological analysis, the effect of LED on the treatment of chemotherapy-induced OM (CIOM) in an animal model. Methods: Twenty male hamsters were equally distributed to two groups: control (C), which received anesthesia and CIOM induction; and LED (L), which received anesthesia, CIOM induction, and LED treatment (635 nm, 120 mW, 0.48 J). The clinical analysis was performed through two specific scales for OM analysis on days 5, 7 and 10 of the experiment. In addition, the injured area of all hamsters check pouch mucosa was removed and processed for histological analysis on the last experimental day. Results: After statistical analysis, group L showed less severity of OM when compared with the C group (P < 0.05); beyond that, both healed completely on day 10.Conclusion: Our results suggested that the phototherapy with LED had a positive effect on accelerating repair, reducing the severity of CIOM

Regional anthropogenic disturbance and species-specific niche traits influence the invasiveness of European beetle species

Coleoptera are key elements of terrestrial trophic interactions and generate significant economic and ecological benefits, but their representatives also represent severe pest species. Understanding how invasive species operate is indispensable to identify and anticipate potential invasion areas. However, few studies have explored niche dynamics and drivers of invasions in this group. Here we examined niche dynamics across 54 invasive beetle species native to Europe and assessed whether factors such as human influence index, feeding habits, body size, and niche breadth are associated with the degree of invasion. The realized niches had low similarity in invasive and native ranges (i.e., invaded areas are climatically dissimilar to native ranges). This included a high degree of niche expansion in invaded areas but also environments occupied in the native ranges but unoccupied in the invasive range (unfilling), suggesting that altered species–climate relationships during invasion processes are common. Niche expansions showed positive association with small native niche breadth sizes and movements from highly disturbed native areas to less disturbed invaded ranges; unfilling was associated with invaded niche breadth size and frequency of species occurrence. Both were related to dissimilar realized climatic niches in invaded ranges. Colonization of invaded areas might be triggered by low quality resources in native areas. Unfilling levels might be related to the year of introduction and loss of biotic constraints present in their native distribution, leading to the use of different climatic spaces in the invasive areas. This idea is reinforced by larger invasive climatic niche breadth. Our results provide insight into patterns of invasive species, and initial holistic exploration towards the understanding of invasive species dynamics.journal articl

The aim was to identify techniques for pain perception and promotion of comfort in newborns in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This is an integrative review and for the selection of studies, the Database Platform of the Virtual Health Library was used. The sample included 10 articles that addressed the knowledge and lack of knowledge of nursing professionals about the identification of pain and comfort in newborns. The nursing team must have scientific knowledge to assess pain in newborns to provide quality and humanized care. From this research, it was possible to list several non-pharmacological measures to promote comfort and pain relief in the neonate and although several scales for pain assessment have been mentioned, there are institutions where they are not registered and many nursing professionals are unaware of them or they don't use it.Objetivou-se identificar técnicas para a percepção da dor e promoção do conforto em recém-nascidos em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal. Some studies have shown evidence that the prophylactic use of bethanechol chloride (BC) may be useful in preventing the incidence and/or severity of xerostomia (XT). However, the indication of BC in irradiated patients with XT needs to be better characterized. The study aimed to evaluate the influence of BC on XT, salivary flow rate, and salivary composition in patients previously submitted to head and neck radiotherapy. Forty five irradiated patients complaining of XT used 50 mg/day of BC for 3 months, and the salivary parameters were evaluated in 4 Phases (Before BC therapy, after one month of BC, 2 months of BC, and 3 months of BC). Biochemical analysis included buffering capacity; pH; total protein concentration (TP); amylase concentration (AM); catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (PX) activities. In addition, unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow rates were determined and XT was classified. According to the XT grading system used, patients showed improvement in XT between Phase 1, and Phases 2, 3 and 4. In addition, some changes were observed in TP concentration (decreased); AM concentration (increased); and PX and CAT activities (decreased and increased, respectively) after Phase 2, for stimulated saliva collection (p<0.05). Our results suggested that when BC was used to treat salivary gland dysfunction induced by head and neck radiotherapy, improvement in XT symptoms, and some changes in saliva composition were shown
