People’s voices on the sustainable forest reform in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Since the early 2000s, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been conducting a reform of its forestry sector with the publication of The Forest Code (2002). The implementation of this law, which aims to assure the participation of all stakeholders, has been evolving slowly since then. The present research aims to evaluate the knowledge local communities and indigenous people detain over the ongoing reform, and the expectations they created when negotiations over the implementation of industrial harvesting activities in their traditional territories began. By interviewing local people, we came to understand that insufficient knowledge regarding the law gathers with a lack of concern towards ecological or environmental matters and with the need of seeing basic needs satisfied; all this in a context in which different stakeholders’ responsibilities and negotiational terms are often misunderstood.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The influence of frequent flyer programs on the loyalty of low-cost airlines customers
As companhias "low cost" revolucionaram o mercado aéreo.
Consequentemente, as companhias aéreas criaram
Low cost airlines have revolutionized the travel industry. Their competitive prices have allowed
millions of passengers to travel to destinations that were far off their reach.
Nevertheless, low-cost airlines have always suffered from low loyalty from their customers. Since
price is the main driver of their purchase decision, customers switch quickly between airlines. As
a response, airlines have created loyalty programs that aim to reverse this trend.
Our research aims to study if in fact this strategic decision made by low-cost airline's managers
was the correct one and if it helps to mitigate the risk of low loyalty of low-cost airline's customers.
We started our research by deep diving on the current literature and study authors that explain
brand loyalty, brand loyalty on airlines, brand loyalty on low-cost airlines, loyalty programs and
loyalty programs on low-cost airlines.
Furthermore, a survey was conducted where we analyzed the results according to our objectives.
We concluded that there is a very low increase of loyalty for passengers that are part of frequent
flier programs of low-cost airlines.
As a result, we advise and urge low-cost airline's managers to re-think their strategic decision and
to create loyalty programs that are more attractive
A methodological approach to evaluate elderly-robot interactions
The relevance in the study of interaction between elderly and robots may depend on the choice of activities that robots can be developed to perform and the assessment of their impact and importance for older people. This research requires coordinated research between computer engineers and specialists in the humanities and social sciences. Being a recent research area, it is particularly relevant to carefully select the behavioural variables to be analyzed, the methodology adopted and the instruments that allow for a rigorous evaluation. Based on these assumptions, the present study aims to develop Innovative Initiatives for the Promotion of Active Aging in the EUROACE Region. The authors propose an appropriate methodology and instruments to evaluate the impact of the human-robot interaction in the promotion of a more active aging in a group of elderly in a nursing home. The analyzed variables focus on the involvement of the elderly in the activities, their capacity for initiative and to establish social interactions, indicators of well-being and a proactive attitude. The methodology of the study is mixed (qualitative and quantitative), organized as an exploratory case study. Data collection is based on naturalistic observation but variables are quantitatively assessed in a pre/post-test design. The research design identified the narratives of the elderly and the staff of the institution regarding the needs and interests of each elderly person, classified the participants according to the levels of prevailing social interactions, involvement and initiative in activities, considered important variables for an active ageing and, in this sense, demonstrated its adequacy to be used to evaluate the results of the intervention using social assistive robots.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Accessibility to public information : an evaluation of an services and information portal of Brazilian Federal Government
The central premise of this article – part of a Master thesis – is that the
Internet is a strong technology tool for the access to and the
dissemination of information. That is why government bodies have been
using it as a form of approaching citizens. Based on this premise, and in
an attempt to evaluate its effective reach, the Services and Information
Portal of the Brazilian Federal Government is assessed on the basis of
Vilellas´s methodology (2003). This methodology comprises 73 criteria,
which are grouped under 14 parameters. These parameters, in its turn,
are divided into three dimensions, namely, content, usability and
functionality. During a pre-established period of time, three different
types of software were used as assessing tools, and marks were
attributed to each dimension in order to evaluate its degree of approval.
Research results pointed to both strengths and weaknesses of the
Portal. Firstly, the low marks given to the form of the content
presentation, updating and maintenance. Secondly, a balance in usability
marks, underlining, however, the difficulty for citizens with special needs
to access the Portal
Development of resorbable metal-based biomedical implants
The interest in bioresorbable materials has been increasing throughout the years. Various
non-resorbable metals like pure titanium and its alloys, are used to correct bone fractures
and some to produce stents for cardiovascular purposes. However, these materials show
some limitations, namely the necessity of a second surgery for their removal and so, bioresorbable
materials have been studied as an alternative. Additive Manufacturing (AM)
is one way to produce the implants and has major advantages over traditional methods.
Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is one type of AM and has a very promising
future in the production of bioresorbable implants due to its high energy efficiency,
high deposition rate, and lower equipment cost. Furthermore, a Hydroxyapatite (HA)
coating on these implants has been shown to improve corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.
In this work, samples of bioresorbable Mg alloys were fabricated using WAAM
and a coating of HA was made using electrodeposition. Their microstructures were analysed
as well as their electrochemical characterization, in vitro degradation and corrosion
resistance, before and after the coating. The mass variation experiments in PBS under
static conditions were inconclusive because sometimes the substrates gain weight, especially
in acid environments. However, the alloys seemed more corroded in that condition
than in neutral pH. It was concluded that it is possible to cover the substrates with HA,
improving their corrosion resistance. Additionally, lower voltages (3V and 3.5V) seemed
to present better results than the others (4V, 4.5V, 5V and 6V), with more homogeneous
coatings. Regarding deposition times, too low (30-90 min) revealed seemingly weaker
depositions, and too exaggerated times (24 hours) revealed the production of corrosion
products. The next steps are the study of the toxicity, biocompatibility, and cell adhesion
with the HA coating, and to improve the mass variation experiment, it should be under
No entanto, estes
Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing
degradação in vitro e a resistência à corrosão, antes e depois do revestimento. As experiências
No entanto, as
