    A educação para o empreendedorismo em mediação: um estudo com estudantes universitários

    A educação para o empreendedorismo é cada vez mais referenciada nos documentos da União Europeia, constituindo um aspeto essencial para o desenvolvimento sustentável da sociedade contemporânea e deve ser entendida como uma atitude geral e transversal dos cidadãos, onde se poderá incluir a criação de novas empresas. O espírito empreendedor desenvolve-se num ambiente que encoraje formas ativas de aprendizagem e deve desenvolver-se ao longo da vida numa lógica de transversalidade. Alguns estudos publicados pelo governo português destacam a iniciativa e o empreendedorismo como uma das competências-chave para Portugal até 2020. Neste sentido, desenvolveu-se uma formação em Educação para o Empreendedorismo, numa Instituição de Ensino Superior pública, com 10 estudantes que frequentavam uma Unidade Curricular (UC) integrada no plano curricular da Licenciatura em Educação, no 3º ano. Um dos objetivos da UC é o de aprofundar abordagens multifacetadas de que se podem revestir as dinâmicas da mediação social e educativa, pelo que a formação mobilizava as competências adquiridas, a aproximação a novas oportunidades e o desenvolvimento de competências empreendedoras. Esta formação teve a duração de 34 horas (19 horas presenciais e 15 horas de trabalho autónomo) e foi realizada por um investigador experiente, que obteve autorização do diretor de departamento e do diretor de curso. As estudantes, em grupo, construíram e apresentaram quatro projetos potencialmente inovadores que, tomando como base os princípios da formação, incidiram na intervenção em mediação. Algum tempo após a formação, foram realizadas entrevistas estruturadas às estudantes para compreender o contributo da formação. Os dados foram analisados com recurso à análise de conteúdo. Os resultados indiciam uma consciencialização da relevância que estas competências podem assumir no futuro profissional das estudantes

    Biologia reprodutiva e distilia em Palicourea rigida H. B. & K. (Rubiaceae) em Cerrados do Brasil Central

    A distilia é um polimorfismo floral mais freqüente entre as espécies de Rubiaceae do que em qualquer outro grupo das Angiospermas. Palicourea rigida é uma espécie de Rubiaceae, amplamente distribuída nos cerrados brasileiros e em outras áreas de savanas neotropicais. O presente trabalho buscou estudar a biologia floral e reprodutiva de populações de P. rigida comparando as características associadas à heterostilia e a ocorrência de assimetrias entre os morfos florais. O trabalho foi realizado na Fazenda Água Limpa, Brasília, entre 1993 e 1995; no Parque Estadual da Serra de Caldas Novas-GO e na RPPN do Clube Caça e Pesca Itororó de Uberlândia-MG em 2005 e 2006. As populações foram caracterizadas quanto à densidade, altura e razão entre morfos dos indivíduos floridos. Foram investigadas diferenças na morfometria, produção de néctar, sucesso reprodutivo e reações de incompatibilidade. A floração foi longa, praticamente durante toda a estação chuvosa. As flores eram claramente distílicas e com hercogamia recíproca, apresentaram néctar como recompensa e duraram apenas um dia. Apesar de diferirem em densidade e altura dos indivíduos, as populações foram predominantemente isopléticas. A produção de néctar variou em volume e concentração, mas não foi associada a cada um dos morfos. A espécie mostrou-se marcadamente autoincompatível, mas o sucesso reprodutivo foi sempre alto e independente do morfo floral. Houve diferença nos locais de formação das barreiras de incompatibilidade semelhante ao observado para outras Rubiaceae. Os principais visitantes florais e polinizadores foram os beija-flores Colibri serrirostris e Eupetomena macroura. A alta produção de frutos indica que os polinizadores efetivamente transportaram quantidades suficientes de grãos de pólen compatíveis entre os morfos, apesar de comumente apresentarem comportamento territorial.Distyly is a floral polymorphism more common among the Rubiaceae than in any other angiosperm group. Palicourea rigida is a typically distylous species of the Rubiaceae widely distributed in the Brazilian Cerrados. This work aimed to study the floral biology and breeding system of P. rigida in order to verify if there wasasymmetry between floral morphs. The work was carried out at Fazenda Água Limpa, Brasília-DF, from 1993 to 1995; and at Serra Caldas Novas State Park-Goias and in Clube Caça e Pesca Itororó de Uberlândia-Minas Gerais in 2005 and 2006. Density, height and pin/thrum ratio were assessed for flowering individuals in all areas. Plants were investigated for differences in floral morphology, nectar production, reproductive success and site of self incompatibility reactions. Blooming period was long and concentrated during the rains. Flowers were clearly distylous and with reciprocal herkogamy. They produced nectar and lasted for a single day. In spite of differences in density and height, populations were mostly isoplethic. Nectar production varied in volume and concentration but the differences could not be associated with floral morphs. The species is self-incompatible but reproductive success was always high and independent of floral morphs. There were differences in the site of incompatibility barriers between floral morphs, which were similar to those observed for other Rubiaceae. The main floral visitors and pollinators were the hummingbirds Colibri serrirostris and Eupetomena macroura. High fruit-set indicates that the pollinators transported enough compatible pollen grains between floral morphs, despite their territorial behavior

    Client needs and satisfaction in an HIV facility

    Health care evaluation serves the purpose of monitoring the quality of health care provided by Health Care Providers (HCP), so that health care services can be provided most effectively and efficiently. Patient satisfaction studies are widely used to assess the quality of outpatient care. A client satisfaction study was conducted at an HIV health care facility in Sydney, Australia during 2007-2008. There were three objectives: 1.) To validate a questionnaire for future determination of client satisfaction in HIV health care facilities. 2.) To identify the levels of satisfaction of clients, and investigate any dissatisfaction and unmet needs towards HIV health care. 3.) To provide recommendations for improving client satisfaction levels in HIV health care. This research used a mixed method approach and consisted of two phases. The first phase was a quantitative survey conducted with 166 clients (both HIV positive and negative) at Albion Street Centre (ASC) using a newly-devised questionnaire. Clients were asked to answer demographic questions, rate their levels of satisfaction with each aspect and each HCP category, and provide suggestions for improvement. Quantitative statistical analysis was conducted to obtain a general view of client satisfaction levels. Dissatisfaction and unmet needs of clients were then investigated in-depth in the second phase of the research through qualitative face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Twenty-two clients (both HIV positive and negative) at ASC were interviewed individually and asked about their attitudes, perceptions, and experiences towards their HCP and the HIV health care services received. Thematic analysis was used to categorise and interpret the qualitative data. More than 90% of the clients were satisfied with most of the aspects covered in the survey, with a mean overall satisfaction score of 84 out of 100. Clients were most iii satisfied with the “technical quality” and “interpersonal manner” of the HCP, and were least satisfied with “waiting time” and “availability of HCP”. The HCP category with which the clients has the highest level of satisfaction was “nurses” (86%), followed by “psychologists” (84%), then “doctors” (83%). Clients who were HIV negative, had a full time job, visited ASC less frequently, or did not possess any type of Health Care Card were more satisfied with the services overall. No common dissatisfaction or unmet needs towards HIV health care service were identified. “Technical quality of HCP” and “the relationship with HCP” were the two most important determinants of client satisfaction, which outweighed the inconvenience contributed by the poor availability of HCP and the location of ASC. The maintenance of “confidentiality/privacy” was shown to be fundamental in HIV health care facilities. The multi-disciplinary nature of ASC increased the degree of convenience and satisfaction level among clients. Suggestions for improvement in client satisfaction levels include increasing the attractiveness of the physical environment and the variety of educational reading materials in the waiting area; introducing beverages, and encouraging clients to be involved in their treatment decisions. Health care administrative staff in particular are reminded not to neglect the importance of the availability of HCP, accessibility, and physical environment when establishing a new HIV health care facility. The mixed method approach (quantitative survey and qualitative interviews) proved beneficial. It increased the validity of the findings by assessing client satisfaction levels using more than one method. This enabled clarification of ambiguities noted in the initial survey through probes used in the interviews, and also allowed investigation of the determinants of client satisfaction through understanding their experiences in HIV health care. Future client satisfaction studies would benefit from using this approach

    Surface engineering of silica nanoparticles for oral insulin delivery: characterization and cell toxicity studies

    The present work aimed at studying the interaction between insulin and SiNP surfaced with mucoadhesive polymers (chitosan, sodium alginate or polyethylene glycol) and the evaluation of their biocompatibility with HepG2 and Caco-2 cell lines, which mimic in vivo the target of insulin-loaded nanoparticles upon oral administration. Thus, a systematic physicochemical study of the surface-modified insulin-silica nanoparticles (Ins-SiNP) using mucoadhesive polymers has been described. The surfacing of nanoparticle involved the coating of silica nanoparticles (SiNP) with different mucoadhesive polymers, to achieve high contact between the systems and the gut mucosa to enhance the oral insulin bioavailability. SiNP were prepared by a modified Stöber method at room temperature via hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Interaction between insulin and nanoparticles was assessed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) studies. The high efficiency of nanoparticles' coating resulted in more stable system. FTIR spectra of insulin-loaded nanoparticles showed amide absorption bands which are characteristic of α-helix content. In general, all developed nanoparticles demonstrated high biocompatible, at the tested concentrations (50-500 μg/mL), revealing no or low toxicity in the two human cancer cell lines (HepG2 and Caco-2). In conclusion, the developed insulin-loaded SiNP surfaced with mucoadhesive polymers demonstrated its added value for oral administration of proteins

Published by BMJ.OBJECTIVES: Healthcare workers (HCWs) were the first to be prioritised for COVID-19 vaccination. This study aims to estimate the COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness (VE) against SARS-CoV-2 symptomatic infection among HCWs in Portuguese hospitals. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We analysed data from HCWs (all professional categories) from three central hospitals: one in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region and two in the central region of mainland Portugal, between December 2020 and March 2022. VE against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection was estimated as one minus the confounder adjusted HRs by Cox models considering age group, sex, self-reported chronic disease and occupational exposure to patients diagnosed with COVID-19 as adjustment variables. RESULTS: During the 15 months of follow-up, the 3034 HCWs contributed a total of 3054 person-years at risk, and 581 SARS-CoV-2 events occurred. Most participants were already vaccinated with a booster dose (n=2653, 87%), some are vaccinated with only the primary scheme (n=369, 12.6%) and a few remained unvaccinated (n=12, 0.4%) at the end of the study period. VE against symptomatic infection was 63.6% (95% CI 22.6% to 82.9%) for HCWs vaccinated with two doses and 55.9% (95% CI -1.3% to 80.8%) for HCWs vaccinated with one booster dose. Point estimate VE was higher for individuals with two doses taken between 14 days and 98 days (VE=71.9%; 95% CI 32.3% to 88.3%). CONCLUSION: This cohort study found a high COVID-19 VE against symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in Portuguese HCWs after vaccination with one booster dose, even after Omicron variant occurrence. The small sample size, the high vaccine coverage, the very low number of unvaccinated individuals and the few events observed during the study period contributed to the low precision of the estimates.publishersversionpublishe

    Cultura organizacional e o bem-estar dos terapeutas ocupacionais Portugueses

    Mestrado em Gestão e Avaliação de Tecnologias em SaúdeO comportamento individual e organizacional são influenciados pela cultura organizacional que configura as formas distintas de expressão e de interação social, que explicam hábitos, costumes e crenças, partilhados pelos membros do mesmo grupo. O presente estudo tem como objetivo principal verificar se a cultura organizacional influencia o bem-estar no trabalho percecionado pelos terapeutas ocupacionais. Pretende-se ainda perceber se as características pessoais e profissionais destes profissionais de saúde, influenciam o seu Bem-Estar no Trabalho. Por último, pretende-se identificar a dimensão que mais contribui para o Bem-Estar no Trabalho. Para a recolha de dados foi realizada por meio de um questionário online constituído por duas secções: a primeira incluiu o Organizacional Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) e a segunda, o questionário Bem-Estar no Trabalho para Profissionais de Saúde (BET-Prof.Saúde). A análise dos dados obtidos foi realizada através de análise estatística descritiva de tendência central, por meio do cálculo de frequências, percentagens, médias e desvio padrão, de modo a poder-se caracterizar a amostra e de testes paramétricos (T-Student, Correlação de Spearman, Oneway A-Nova). Foi ainda utilizada a Regressão Linear para análise do modelo de Bem-Estar no Trabalho. Obteve-se uma amostra de 147 participantes, dos quais 88% eram do sexo feminino e 22% do sexo masculino, com idade compreendida entre os 22 e os 63 anos (m=35,20; ± dp=9,648). Tendo em conta os resultados obtidos, concluiu-se que a cultura organizacional, mais precisamente as culturas de Clã e Adocrática, estão associadas positivamente a melhores níveis de Bem-Estar no Trabalho e que o inverso acontece quando predominam as culturas Hierárquica e de Mercado. As dimensões Engagement, Suporte Social e Clima de Equipa, podem ser influenciadas pelas características profissionais dos indivíduos (local de trabalho, tipo de contrato e função de chefia) e são as que mais se relacionam de forma positiva e significativa com o Bem-Estar no Trabalho.ABSTRACT - Individual and organizational behavior are influenced by the organizational culture that shapes the different forms of expression and social interaction that explain habits, customs, and beliefs shared by members of the same group. The main objective of this study is to verify if the organizational culture influences the well-being of work perceived by the occupational therapists. It is also intended to understand if the personal and professional characteristics of these health professionals influence their well-being at work. Finally, it is intended to identify the dimension that contributes most to Well-being at Work. Data collection was done through an online questionnaire consisting of two sections: the first included the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) and the second, the questionnaire Bem-Estar no Trabalho para Profissionais de Saúde (BET-Prof.saúde). The analysis of the data obtained was performed through a descriptive statistical analysis of central tendency, by means of the calculation of frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviation, in order to be able to characterize the sample and of parametric tests (T-Student, Spearman Correlation, Oneway A-Nova). Linear Regression was also used to analyze the well-being model at work. A sample of 147 participants was obtained, of which 88% were female and 22% male, aged between 22 and 63 years (m = 35,20; ± DP = 9,648). Considering the results obtained, it was concluded that the organizational culture, more precisely the cultures of Clã and Adhocratic, is positively associated with better levels of well-being at work and that the opposite occurs when Hierarchical and Market cultures predominate. The Engagement, Social Support, and Team Climate dimensions can be influenced by the individual’s professional characteristics (workplace, type of contract, and leadership role) and are the ones that are most positively and significantly related to Well-being at work.N/

    Poor Immune Reconstitution in HIV-Infected Patients Associates with High Percentage of Regulatory CD4(+) T Cells

    CD4(+) regulatory T cells (Tregs) are essential for the maintenance of the immune system's equilibrium, by dampening the activation of potential auto-reactive T cells and avoiding excessive immune activation. To correctly perform their function, Tregs must be maintained at the right proportion with respect to effector T cells. Since this equilibrium is frequently disrupted in individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), we hypothesize that its deregulation could hamper immune reconstitution in patients with poor CD4(+) T cell recovery under highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). We analysed Tregs percentages amongst CD4(+) T cells in 53 HIV-infected patients under HAART, with suppression of viral replication and distinct levels of immune reconstitution. As controls, 51 healthy individuals were also analysed. We observed that amongst the patients with Nadir values (the lowest CD4(+) T cell counts achieved) = 10% of total CD4(+) T cells) had the worse CD4(+) T cell reconstitution. In accordance, the well-described direct correlation between the Nadir value and CD4(+) T cell reconstitution is clearly more evident in individuals with high Tregs proportions. Furthermore, we observed a strong negative correlation between Tregs percentages and CD4(+) T cell recovery among immunological non-responder HIV+ individuals. All together, this work shows that high Tregs frequency is an important factor associated with sub-optimal CD4(+) T cell recovery. This is particularly relevant for immunological non-responders with low Nadir values. Our results suggest that the Tregs proportion might be of clinical relevance to define cut-offs for HAART initiation

    IL-10 Overexpression After BCG Vaccination Does Not Impair Control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection

    Control of tuberculosis depends on the rapid expression of protective CD4+ T-cell responses in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb)-infected lungs. We have recently shown that the immunomodulatory cytokine IL-10 acts intrinsically in CD4+ T cells and impairs their parenchymal migratory capacity, thereby preventing control of Mtb infection. Herein, we show that IL-10 overexpression does not impact the protection conferred by the established memory CD4+ T-cell response, as BCG-vaccinated mice overexpressing IL-10 only during Mtb infection display an accelerated, BCG-induced, Ag85b-specific CD4+ T-cell response and control Mtb infection. However, IL-10 inhibits the migration of recently activated ESAT-6-specific CD4+ T cells into the lung parenchyma and impairs the development of ectopic lymphoid structures associated with reduced expression of the chemokine receptors CXCR5 and CCR7. Together, our data support a role for BCG vaccination in preventing the immunosuppressive effects of IL-10 in the fast progression of Mtb infection and may provide valuable insights on the mechanisms contributing to the variable efficacy of BCG vaccination
