    The African hind's (Cephalopholis taeniops, serranidae) use of artificial reefs off Sal Island (Cape Verde): a preliminary study based on acoustic telemetry

    The African hind Cephalopholis taeniops (Valenciennes, 1828) is one of the most important commercial demersal species caught in the Cape Verde archipelago. The species is closely associated with hard substrate and is one of the main attractions for SCUBA divers. In January 2006 a former Soviet fishing vessel - the Kwarcit - was sunk off Santa Maria Bay (Sal Island). Young C. taeniops are commonly observed in this artificial reef (AR). In order to investigate the species' use of the AR, 4 specimens were captured and surgically implanted underwater with Vemco brand acoustic transmitters. The fish were monitored daily with an active telemetry receiver for one week after release. Simultaneously, an array of 3 passive VR2 / VR2W receivers was set for 63 days, registering data that allowed an analysis of spatial, daily and short term temporal activity patterns. The results showed site fidelity to the AR, with no migrations to the nearby natural reef. The method used allowed to register a consistent higher activity during daytime and a preference for the area opposite the dominant current

    Two closely related 2-(benzofuran-2-yl)-2-oxoethyl benzoates: structural differences and C 14H...O hydrogen-bonded supramolecular assemblies

    The compounds 2-(1-benzofuran-2-yl)-2-oxoethyl 2-nitrobenzoate, C17H11NO6 (I), and 2-(1-benzofuran-2-yl)-2-oxoethyl 2-aminobenzoate, C17H13NO4 (II), were synthesized under mild conditions. Their molecular structures were characterized by both spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The molecular conformations of both title compounds are generally similar. However, different ortho-substituted moieties at the phenyl ring of the two compounds cause deviations in the torsion angles between the carbonyl group and the attached phenyl ring. In compound (I), the ortho-nitrophenyl ring is twisted away from the adjacent carbonyl group whereas in compound (II), the ortho-aminophenyl ring is almost co-planar with the carbonyl group.     Using XML and XSLT for flexible elicitation of mental-health risk knowledge

    Current tools for assessing risks associated with mental-health problems require assessors to make high-level judgements based on clinical experience. This paper describes how new technologies can enhance qualitative research methods to identify lower-level cues underlying these judgements, which can be collected by people without a specialist mental-health background. Methods and evolving results: Content analysis of interviews with 46 multidisciplinary mental-health experts exposed the cues and their interrelationships, which were represented by a mind map using software that stores maps as XML. All 46 mind maps were integrated into a single XML knowledge structure and analysed by a Lisp program to generate quantitative information about the numbers of experts associated with each part of it. The knowledge was refined by the experts, using software developed in Flash to record their collective views within the XML itself. These views specified how the XML should be transformed by XSLT, a technology for rendering XML, which resulted in a validated hierarchical knowledge structure associating patient cues with risks. Conclusions: Changing knowledge elicitation requirements were accommodated by flexible transformations of XML data using XSLT, which also facilitated generation of multiple data-gathering tools suiting different assessment circumstances and levels of mental-health knowledge

    Seven HCI Grand Challenges

    This article aims to investigate the Grand Challenges which arise in the current and emerging landscape of rapid technological evolution towards more intelligent interactive technologies, coupled with increased and widened societal needs, as well as individual and collective expectations that HCI, as a discipline, is called upon to address. A perspective oriented to humane and social values is adopted, formulating the challenges in terms of the impact of emerging intelligent interactive technologies on human life both at the individual and societal levels. Seven Grand Challenges are identified and presented in this article: Human-Technology Symbiosis; Human-Environment Interactions; Ethics, Privacy and Security; Well-being, Health and Eudaimonia; Accessibility and Universal Access; Learning and Creativity; and Social Organization and Democracy. Although not exhaustive, they summarize the views and research priorities of an international interdisciplinary group of experts, reflecting different scientific perspectives, methodological approaches and application domains. Each identified Grand Challenge is analyzed in terms of: concept and problem definition; main research issues involved and state of the art; and associated emerging requirements

    Communicating content: development and evaluation of icons for academic document triage through visualisation and perception

    This work seeks to identify key features and characteristics for the design of icons that can support the tasks of information seekers in academic document triage interfaces. Such icons are meant to act as visual links to the specific elements or sections in an academic document. We suggest that icons in triage interfaces are better able to communicate information, provide feedback and enable faster user interactions than text, particularly in mobile-based interfaces. Through investigation of visualisation and perception processes, we are able to propose five primary icon categories, the two most dominant being iconic and symbolic: iconic representations mostly apply to graphically and spatially distinct document elements (i.e. Title, Abstract, Tables and Figures), externalising the elements’ surface propositions. Symbolic representations are largely associated with elements of greater semantic value (Introduction, Conclusion, Full text and Author), drawing upon the elements’ deep propositions

    Porosity estimation of (Moso bamboo) by computed tomography and backscattered electron imaging

    This study aims to investigate and quantify the porosity in the cross section of Phyllostachys edulis (Moso bamboo) culm wall. The porosity results are expected to be utilised in numerical study of heat and moisture transfer. Computed tomography (CT) and backscattered electron (BSE) imaging methods are utilised in this study because these two methods allow measurements of the anisotropic features of bamboo specimens. The results of these two methods can be represented as the function of the real dimension rather than the pore size distribution of the specimen. The specimens are obtained from eight different locations along the Moso bamboo culms. Both internodes and nodes specimens are measured in this study. The average porosity, standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (COV) are calculated for BSE and CT results. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (PPMCC) is also calculated in this study to analyse the correlation between the BSE results and CT results. Typical porosity results from 400 sampling points and 10 portions average porosity are analysed in this study. The CT scanning results show similar trend with BSE results. The correlation relationship between BSE and CT results approaches moderate correlation level to strong correlation level. The average porosity of internode specimens is from 43.9 to 58.8 % by BSE measurement and from 44.9 to 63.4 % by CT measurement. The average porosity of node specimens is from 37.4 to 56.6 % by BSE measurement and from 32.1 to 62.2 % by CT measurement
