Probing the Binary Black Hole Merger Regime with Scalar Perturbations
We present results obtained by scattering a scalar field off the curved
background of a coalescing binary black hole system. A massless scalar field is
evolved on a set of fixed backgrounds, each provided by a spatial hypersurface
generated numerically during a binary black hole merger. We show that the
scalar field scattered from the merger region exhibits quasinormal ringing once
a common apparent horizon surrounds the two black holes. This occurs earlier
than the onset of the perturbative regime as measured by the start of the
quasinormal ringing in the gravitational waveforms. We also use the scalar
quasinormal frequencies to associate a mass and a spin with each hypersurface,
and observe the compatibility of this measure with the horizon mass and spin
computed from the dynamical horizon framework.Comment: 10 Pages and 6 figure
Tests on Thrust Augmenters for Jet Propulsion
This series of tests was undertaken to determine how much the reaction thrust of a jet could be increased by the use of thrust augmenters and thus to give some indication as to the feasibility of jet propulsion for airplanes. The tests were made during the first part of 1927 at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory. A compressed air jet was used in connection with a series of annular guides surrounding the jet to act as thrust augmenters. The results show that, although it is possible to increase the thrust of a jet, the increase is not large enough to affect greatly the status of the problem of the application of jet propulsion to airplanes
Total scattering descriptions of local and cooperative distortions in the oxide spinel (Mg,Cu)Cr2O4 with dilute Jahn-Teller ions
The normal spinel oxide MgCr2O4 is cubic at room temperature while the normal
spinel CuCr2O4 is tetragonal as a consequence of the Jahn-Teller nature of Cu2+
on the tetrahedral sites. Despite different end-member structures, complete
solid solutions of Mg_{1-x}Cu_xCr2O4 can be prepared that display a first-order
structural transition with composition x = 0.43 at room temperature. Reverse
Monte Carlo analysis of total neutron scattering on data acquired between 300 K
and 15 K on samples with x = 0.10, 0.20, and 0.43 provides unbiased local and
average structure descriptions of the samples, including an understanding of
the transition from local Jahn-Teller distortions in the cubic phase to
cooperative distortions that result in a tetragonal structure. Distributions of
continuous symmetry measures help to understand and distinguish distorted and
undistorted coordination around the tetrahedral site in the solid solutions.
Magnetic exchange bias is observed in field-cooled hysteresis loops of samples
with dilute Cu2+ concentration and in samples with tetragonal--cubic phase

Relinquishing Control: What Romanian De Se Attitude Reports Teach Us About Immunity To Error Through Misidentification
Higginbotham argued that certain linguistic items of English, when used in indirect discourse, necessarily trigger first-personal interpretations. They are: the emphatic reflexive pronoun and the controlled understood subject, represented as PRO. PRO is special, in this respect, due to its imposing obligatory control effects between the main clause and its subordinates ). Folescu & Higginbotham, in addition, argued that in Romanian, a language whose grammar doesn’t assign a prominent role to PRO, de se triggers are correlated with the subjunctive mood of certain verbs. That paper, however, didn’t account for the grammatical diversity of the reports that display immunity to error through misidentification in Romanian: some of these reports are expressed by using de se triggers; others are not. Their IEM, moreover, is not systematically lexically controlled by the verbs, via their theta-roles; it is, rather, determined by the meaning of the verbs in question. Given the data from Romanian, I will argue, the phenomenon of IEM cannot be fully explained starting either from the syntactical or the lexical structure of a language
Frequency noise and intensity noise of next-generation gravitational-wave detectors with RF/DC readout schemes
The sensitivity of next-generation gravitational-wave detectors such as
Advanced LIGO and LCGT should be limited mostly by quantum noise with an
expected technical progress to reduce seismic noise and thermal noise. Those
detectors will employ the optical configuration of resonant-sideband-extraction
that can be realized with a signal-recycling mirror added to the Fabry-Perot
Michelson interferometer. While this configuration can reduce quantum noise of
the detector, it can possibly increase laser frequency noise and intensity
noise. The analysis of laser noise in the interferometer with the conventional
configuration has been done in several papers, and we shall extend the analysis
to the resonant-sideband-extraction configuration with the radiation pressure
effect included. We shall also refer to laser noise in the case we employ the
so-called DC readout scheme.Comment: An error in Fig. 10 in the published version in PRD has been
corrected in this version; an erratum has been submitted to PRD. After
correction, this figure reflects a significant difference in the ways RF and
DC readout schemes are susceptible to laser noise. In addition, the levels of
mirror loss imbalances and input laser amplitude noise have also been updated
to be more realistic for Advanced LIG
Supercolonial structure of invasive populations of the tawny crazy ant Nylanderia fulva in the US
Background: Social insects are among the most serious invasive pests in the world, particularly successful at monopolizing environmental resources to outcompete native species and achieve ecological dominance. The invasive success of some social insects is enhanced by their unicolonial structure, under which the presence of numerous queens and the lack of aggression against non-nestmates allow high worker densities, colony growth, and survival while eliminating intra-specific competition. In this study, we investigated the population genetics, colony structure and levels of aggression in the tawny crazy ant, Nylanderia fulva, which was recently introduced into the United States from South America. Results: We found that this species experienced a genetic bottleneck during its invasion lowering its genetic diversity by 60%. Our results show that the introduction of N. fulva is associated with a shift in colony structure. This species exhibits a multicolonial organization in its native range, with colonies clearly separated from one another, whereas it displays a unicolonial system with no clear boundaries among nests in its invasive range. We uncovered an absence of genetic differentiation among populations across the entire invasive range, and a lack of aggressive behaviors towards conspecifics from different nests, even ones separated by several hundreds of kilometers. Conclusions: Overall, these results suggest that across its entire invasive range in the U.S.A., this species forms a single supercolony spreading more than 2000 km. In each invasive nest, we found several, up to hundreds, of reproductive queens, each being mated with a single male. The many reproductive queens per nests, together with the free movement of individuals between nests, leads to a relatedness coefficient among nestmate workers close to zero in introduced populations, calling into question the stability of this unicolonial system in which indirect fitness benefits to workers is apparently absent.Fil: Eyer, Pierre André. Exploring Protein-Protein Interactions as Drug Targets for Anti-cancer Therapy with In Silico Workflows
We describe a computational protocol to aid the design of small molecule and peptide drugs that target protein-protein interactions, particularly for anti-cancer therapy. To achieve this goal, we explore multiple strategies, including finding binding hot spots, incorporating chemical similarity and bioactivity data, and sampling similar binding sites from homologous protein complexes. We demonstrate how to combine existing interdisciplinary resources with examples of semi-automated workflows. Finally, we discuss several major problems, including the occurrence of drug-resistant mutations, drug promiscuity, and the design of dual-effect inhibitors.Fil: Goncearenco, Alexander. Investigation of routes and funnels in protein folding by free energy functional methods
We use a free energy functional theory to elucidate general properties of
heterogeneously ordering, fast folding proteins, and we test our conclusions
with lattice simulations. We find that both structural and energetic
heterogeneity can lower the free energy barrier to folding. Correlating
stronger contact energies with entropically likely contacts of a given native
structure lowers the barrier, and anticorrelating the energies has the reverse
effect. Designing in relatively mild energetic heterogeneity can eliminate the
barrier completely at the transition temperature. Sequences with native
energies tuned to fold uniformly, as well as sequences tuned to fold by a
single or a few routes, are rare. Sequences with weak native energetic
heterogeneity are more common; their folding kinetics is more strongly
determined by properties of the native structure. Sequences with different
distributions of stability throughout the protein may still be good folders to
the same structure. A measure of folding route narrowness is introduced which
correlates with rate, and which can give information about the intrinsic biases
in ordering due to native topology. This theoretical framework allows us to
systematically investigate the coupled effects of energy and topology in
protein folding, and to interpret recent experiments which investigate these

News discourses on distant suffering: A critical discourse analysis of the 2003 SARS outbreak
News carries a unique signifying power, a power to represent events in particular ways (Fairclough, 1995). Applying Critical Discourse Analysis and Chouliaraki's theory on the mediation of suffering (2006), this article explores the news representation of the 2003 global SARS outbreak. Following a case-based methodology, we investigate how two Belgian television stations have covered the international outbreak of SARS. By looking into the mediation of four selected discursive moments, underlying discourses of power, hierarchy and compassion were unraveled. The analysis further identified the key role of proximity in international news reporting and supports the claim that Western news media mainly reproduce a Euro-American centered world order. This article argues that news coverage of international crises such as SARS constructs and maintains the socio-cultural difference between 'us' and 'them' as well as articulating global power hierarchies and a division of the world in zones of poverty and prosperity, danger and safety
