    SOUND SYNTHESIS WITH CELLULAR AUTOMATA

    Get PDF
This thesis reports on new music technology research which investigates the use of cellular automata (CA) for the digital synthesis of dynamic sounds. The research addresses the problem of the sound design limitations of synthesis techniques based on CA. These limitations fundamentally stem from the unpredictable and autonomous nature of these computational models. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to develop a sound synthesis technique based on CA capable of allowing a sound design process. A critical analysis of previous research in this area will be presented in order to justify that this problem has not been previously solved. Also, it will be discussed why this problem is worthwhile to solve. In order to achieve such aim, a novel approach is proposed which considers the output of CA as digital signals and uses DSP procedures to analyse them. This approach opens a large variety of possibilities for better understanding the self-organization process of CA with a view to identifying not only mapping possibilities for making the synthesis of sounds possible, but also control possibilities which enable a sound design process. As a result of this approach, this thesis presents a technique called Histogram Mapping Synthesis (HMS), which is based on the statistical analysis of CA evolutions by histogram measurements. HMS will be studied with four different automatons, and a considerable number of control mechanisms will be presented. These will show that HMS enables a reasonable sound design process. With these control mechanisms it is possible to design and produce in a predictable and controllable manner a variety of timbres. Some of these timbres are imitations of sounds produced by acoustic means and others are novel. All the sounds obtained present dynamic features and many of them, including some of those that are novel, retain important characteristics of sounds produced by acoustic means

[EN] This TFG arises from the analysis of some behaviors and actions that are generated around the table; among these, we focus on the gesture of blowing the birthday candles. A simple, instantaneous, banal act, repeated by everyone once a year. A gesture often captured in family snapshots that show us both the social environment and the vital stage in which each individual is. We approach this theme through various pieces that starting from the archive image, and the exploration of different techniques such as painting, photography, cyanotype, are materialized in an artist¿s book and several installation proposals.Fuster Serquera, R. Soundcool Project: Collaborative Music Creation

[EN] This paper addresses four criteria that the Soundcool project meets: to "be sustainable", "be future-oriented", "be transformative" and "be innovative". Soundcool is a pedagogical and technological project. A brief description of the technology behind Soundcool will be useful for the reader before addressing the four criteria. Soundcool is like a ¿Lego¿ for sound; Soundcool is composed of a series of software modules that run on a central computer, or host computer. Each module is sort of a musical instrument; it could be a synthesizer, a sampler, a sound effect processor, etc. these modules can be interconnected in different ways allowing the users, i.e. the students, to create their own arrangements, as we call the module creations and interconnections. Then, each module can be controlled either with the mouse or, what is more interesting, with a mobile device through WiFi. This way, every student can control one or several modules of the whole arrangement from their mobile device contributing to a collaborative and participative experience. This work is supported by Daniel & Nina Carasso Foundation, project 16- AC-2016 and Cátedra Telefónica-UPV 2016-17Robles-Mateo, E.; Serquera, J.; Lloret Romero, MN.; Sastre, J. Thermodynamic analysis of CO2 removal process by adsorption on NaX

The continuous increase of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere is the main contributor to climate change. Thus, it is imperative to develop strategies that help to control manmade emissions of this gas. Carbon dioxide capture is an intensive research area that aims to decrease the energy requirements for the separation and storage of CO2. Even though absorption using an aqueous solvent is a well-established and is the most widely implemented capture technology, it requires high energy for the regeneration of the solvent due to the need to increase the temperature of the aqueous solvent, decreasing the overall efficiency of the process. Adsorption using porous solids has been presented as an alternative process to capture CO2 while decreasing the energy requirements. In the present work, a thermodynamic analysis of the CO2 removal process by adsorption using literature reported data is performed, in order to devise a framework to evaluate and compare two adsorbents under realistic process conditions. Zeolites NaX and Beta were used as case studies to evaluate the proposed model. The results show that, although bed composition profiles have similar trends for both adsorbents, there is a significant difference in the regeneration temperature of these adsorbents, since for zeolite NaX the regeneration temperature is reached around 360K when CO2 is almost pure, whereas for Beta this value is reached around 390K. Thus, NaX has a lower energy requirement than Beta for stablished process conditions. The energy penalty is 91.08 MW per molCO2 recovered for NaX and 104.28 MW per molCO2 recovered for Beta, which is consistent with the calculation of the specific thermal energy and the working capacity

Our work of deepening takes care of the deconstruction and transformation of the pedagogical practices related to the teaching of the writing assumed like process from a sociocultural perspective. To this end, we design, implement and evaluate three didactic sequences from local topics: emblematic places, representative characters and commercial sites. The above was oriented from the qualitative paradigm from the action research method, Gathering the voices of the participants and the details of the process through instruments such as the field diary and the semi-structured interview, configuring these in categories of analysis for triangulation In this way we come to the conclusion that it is possible to transform our classroom practices starting from new ways of setting up the teaching of scripture, a scripture that connects with the life and reality of our contexts, going beyond the walls of the school and at the same time of our old conceptions

Complex Unfolding Kinetics of Single-Domain Proteins in the Presence of Force

Single-molecule force spectroscopy is providing unique, and sometimes unexpected, insights into the free-energy landscapes of proteins. Despite the complexity of the free-energy landscapes revealed by mechanical probes, forced unfolding experiments are often analyzed using one-dimensional models that predict a logarithmic dependence of the unfolding force on the pulling velocity. We previously found that the unfolding force of the protein filamin at low pulling speed did not decrease logarithmically with the pulling speed. Here we present results from a large number of unfolding simulations of a coarse-grain model of the protein filamin under a broad range of constant forces. These show that a two-path model is physically plausible and produces a deviation from the behavior predicted by one-dimensional models analogous to that observed experimentally. We also show that the analysis of the distributions of unfolding forces (p[F]) contains crucial and exploitable information, and that a proper description of the unfolding of single-domain proteins needs to account for the intrinsic multidimensionality of the underlying free-energy landscape, especially when the applied perturbation is small
