The Disciple: A Talking Platformer

Working in Unity to create a two-dimensional platformer with a Natural Language Generation system, I have considered a new way in which Artificial Intelligence may affect gameplay. The resulting project, The Disciple, takes input from the environment of the game and offers successfully a sentence relevant to what occurs within the game\u27s world. The sentences this system generates are diverse enough so that, while the Natural Language Generation system may restate what it has said, already, it does not utter the same sentence twice in a row. Often, the Natural Language Generation system selects a phrase I have written from a large directory of sentences. Occasionally, it sends information to a syntactic component that builds simple sentences, itself. The syntactic component succeeds in creating different parts of the sentence and putting those parts together in order to complete the sentence

Income inequality and solidarity in Europe

This paper studies the relationship between income inequality, a macro-level characteristic, and solidarity of Europeans. To this aim, solidarity is defined as the ‘willingness to contribute to the welfare of other people’. We rely on a theoretical idea according to which feelings of solidarity are derived from both affective and calculating considerations, and we test competing hypotheses relating the extent of income inequality to both motivations for solidarity. Using data from the 1999 European Values Study (EVS), we apply multilevel analysis for 26 European countries. Controlling for household income and for other relevant macro-level characteristics which possibly influence feelings of solidarity of Europeans in different countries, we find evidence that in more unequal countries people are less willing to take action to improve the living conditions of their fellow-countrymen. This is true for respondents living in both low- and high-income households. Following from our expectations derived from the literature, this finding furthermore suggests that, at least when measured in terms of ‘willingness to contribute to the welfare of other people’, feelings of solidarity seem to be influenced more strongly by affective, rather than by calculating considerations

An Approach to Developing a Constructive Feedback Culture Among Peers or: Why Feedback is not Criticism

Der Artikel stellt die Ergebnisse des Tutoriums “Entwicklung von konstruktiver Feedbackkultur unter Peers mithilfe von (Selbst)Videografie” vor. Nachdem einleitend die Bedeutung von Feedbackkultur für zwischenmenschliche Kommunikationsprozesse erläutert wird, stellt die Verfasserin und Tutorin anschließend die Forschungsfragen vor. Im weiteren Verlauf werden die zwei Phasen des Tutoriums beschrieben und Kernbausteine des Tutoriums genannt. Kommunikationstheoretische Aspekte und die praktische Anwendung und Vertiefung dieses Wissens gehen dabei Hand in Hand. Im dritten Schritt wird das im Rahmen des Tutoriums entwickelte Modell zur konstruktiven Feedbackkultur mit seinen drei Dimensionen dargestellt. Am Beispiel der Generalisierung wird aufgezeigt, dass alle drei Dimensionen des Modells miteinander interagieren. Besondere Betonung erhält die Erkenntnis, dass Feedback nicht einfach Kritik ist, sondern vielmehr einer grundlegenden Einstellung – basierend auf einem entsprechenden Menschenbild – bedarf. Der positive Beitrag zur Persönlichkeitsentwicklung und der positive Einfluss auf das Kommunikationsverhalten aller Teilnehmenden sowie die Vorteile der Videografie werden aufgeführt. Abschließend wird betont, dass dieses Modell gruppenspezifisch an den Kontext angepasst werden muss. Im Rahmen eines weiteren Tutoriums soll das Modell versuchsweise in der Lehrer_innenbildung angewandt werden

Preparation of medical products in the doctor's office

Since the end of the last century, the preparation of medical products which must be applied in a germ-poor or sterile state has been increasingly done by specially trained staff at the hospital. The certification program (specialist training) enables personnel who often have no prior medical training to safely perform quality work both in terms of the patient and the employee's on-the-job safety. With the rapid development of out-patient operative care, the lack of adequately trained specialists in this area of sterile materials supply became obvious. The certification program, offered since 2003, closes this gap by focussing on the specific situation of doctor's offices and private-practice clinics, thus equalizing the discrepancies to the hospital situation. The implementation of the certification program in the quality-control system of private practices helps to reduce to an unavoidable minimum the potential risks to patients and staff posed by hygiene deficiencies.Die Aufbereitung von Medizinprodukten, die bestimmungsgemäß keimarm oder steril zur Anwendung kommen, wird seit Ende des vorigen Jahrhunderts im Krankenhaus zunehmend von speziell geschultem Personal durchgeführt. Die anerkannte Schulung (Fachkundeausbildung) befähigt die oft nicht medizinisch vorgebildeten Mitarbeiter/innen zu qualitätsgerechtem Handeln sowohl im Hinblick auf den Patienten als auch im Hinblick auf die eigene Sicherheit am Arbeitsplatz.Im Zusammenhang mit der rasanten Entwicklung der ambulanten operativen Versorgung fiel auf, dass für diesen Bereich der Sterilgutversorgung kein adäquat anerkannt sachkundiges Personal zur Verfügung steht. Der seit 2003 angebotene Sachkundelehrgang schließt diese Lücke, indem er auf die spezifische Situation der Praxen/Praxiskliniken eingeht und so die Divergenzen zum Krankenhausbetrieb ausgleicht. Die Implementierung des Sachkundekurses in das Qualitäts-sicherungssystem des niedergelassenen Arztes hilft mit, das Gefahrenpotential durch Hygienemängel auf das für den Patienten und das Personal unvermeidbare Restrisiko zu vermindern
