[Abstract] The history behind the composition of a manuscript can help to shed light on different aspects of it, such as date, location, or the purpose for which the book was produced. Thus, this paper takes into consideration the handwriting of a selected scientific manuscript in Middle English, Glasgow University Library MS Hunter 509, in order to ascertain some of these aspects. First, the text under investigation will be briefly described and the methodology explained. Secondly, the hands which appear throughout the text will be provided and the identity of the copyist and owners traced. An account of the main aspects of their biography will be supplied. Then, the different types of script, mainly anglicana and secretary, will be put forward and discussed in relation to the manuscript under consideration. Finally, the conclusions are included

The objectives of this paper are the following: first, to investigate the transmission of the text; second, to assess the main codicological and palaeographical features of the treatise; third, to explain the principles followed in the edition of the text, which remains hitherto unedited; and finally, to examine the language of the text in order to locate it geographically. The physical analysis of the codex will be carried out by close, first-hand inspection of the manuscript as well as of its digitised images. The edition of the text will adjust to the semi-diplomatic tenets, which postulate faithfulness to the original witness. As for the linguistic analysis, it will be based on the methodology put forward by the Linguistic Atlas of Late Mediaeval English (LALME) (McInstosh et al. 1986). The appraisal of all the aspects mentioned above will help to yield a complete picture of the treatise and to place it in its material and cultural context.Universidad de Málaga. The codex Glasgow, University Library, MS Hunter 307, which dates from the first half/middle of the fifteenth century, houses several texts: an anonymous Middle English treatise on humours, elements, uroscopy, complexions, etc. (ff. 1r-13r); the Middle English Gilbertus Anglicus (ff. 13r-145v); an anonymous Middle English treatise on buboes (ff. 145v-146v); The Sekenesse of Wymmen (ff. 149v-165v); a Middle English version of Guy de Chauliac’s On Bloodletting (ff. 165v-166v); and a Middle English version of the Circa instans (ff. 167r-172v). The texts comprised within folios 1r and 166v constitute a medical compendium, which has been labelled System of Physic (Young and Aitken 1908: 245-246; Cross 2004: 24-25). This paper takes into consideration the gynaecological and obstetrical treatise known as The Sekenesse of Wymmen, held in folios 149v-165v, which is a translation in the vernacular of Gilbertus Anglicus’s work. The main objective is to analyse supra-textual devices in the treatise, including layout, punctuation, decoration, marginalia and other visual language in order to delimit how the information is organised and knowledge transmitted. This can shed light on the function and usability of the manuscript and can help to place it in its material and cultural context.Universidad de Málaga. Narratology in Early Modern Medical Manuscripts: The Case of London, Wellcome Library, MS 213.

    Get PDF
It has been argued that narrative elements can be found throughout the history of English scientific writing. Narratives can be linked to specific genres; thus, learned texts for medical doctors were different from those directed to lay audiences (Taavitsainen 2022). This article sets out to analyse a specific type of medical narrative, that of recipe collections, focusing for the purpose on the text housed in London, Wellcome Library, MS 213. The manuscript dates from the beginning of the seventeenth century (1606, more specifically) and gathers recipes “experienced and tryed by the speciall practize of Mrs Corlyon” (Moorat 1962-1973). The codex belonged to Alethea Howard (née Talbot), countess of Arundel, and seems to have been a wedding gift from her mother-in-law (Leong and Pennell 2007: 141). The main aim of the study is to identify and examine narrative forms and functions as well as particular features in the collection of recipes held in MS Wellcome 213, which can contribute to the knowledge of recipes written by (and for) women during the Early Modern period.Universidad de Málaga. Long-term hydrological changes over a seventeen-year period in temporary ponds of the Doñana N. P. (SW Spain)

Hydrological changes of 6 temporary ponds in the Doñana National Park were monitored over 17 years (from 1st October 1989 through 30th September 2006) by recording the shallow water-table (in 1 to 8 week intervals) and the duration of pond wet phase (or hydroperiod) during each hydrological cycle. The annual average rainfall was 559 mm during the 17 years of the study, which included six wet, six moderate, and five dry cycles, all in a seemingly random sequence. The average wet period extended from October until the end of March, (both inclusive), while the dry season occupied the rest of the year. The water-table in the ponds oscillated each year following this alternation of rainy and dry seasons, but this oscillation was minimal during dry years, and even failed to occur at some ponds. Since 1998/99 onward, the average hydroperiod has shortened by three months in Charco del Toro pond, and by almost two months in El Brezo pond. On the other hand, the rest of the ponds studied, situated at more than 1 km from Matalascañas, barely exhibited a reduction in their hydroperiod. These results suggest that groundwater supply to these ponds ponds has been probably reduced by the pumping subterranean water to the Matalascañas tourist resort, whose pumping stations are located less than 1 km away from the two most affected ponds (Charco del Toro and Brezo). It is necessary for these pumping stations to be relocated at a greater distance to avoid any further impact to the ponds inside the Doñana Biological Reserve, and a specific management plan needs to be developed for those ponds. The monitoring of changes in the vegetation around the Doñana ponds can be a useful tool to detect even subtle hydrologic variations. Tamarix canariensis coverage has increased since established on the northern side of Taraje pond during the dry season of 1988/89.

From the emergence of the monoamine hypothesis of depression, the first-line treatment for MDD had mainly acted by inhibiting monoamine reuptake, and thereby increasing these levels in the synaptic cleft. However, in recent years, several newantidepressant drugs have appeared, including duloxetine, a dual serotonin (5-HT) and noradrenaline (NA) reuptake inhibitor recommended for the treatment of MDD. Areas covered: The article reviews and discusses the biochemical and functional profile of duloxetine splitting the review into acute and long-term treatment with this dual monoamine reuptake inhibitor. In addition, the authors summarize available preclinical behavioral research data, which have demonstrated among other effects, the antidepressant-like activity of duloxetine in several animal models. The authors focus on the most recent literature on synaptic neuroplasticity modulation of this antidepressant drug. Finally, the authors briefly mention other approved indications of duloxetine. Expert opinion: Duloxetine inhibits 5-HT and NA reuptake, effectively desensitizes various autoreceptors and promotes neuroplasticity. Clinically, duloxetine is an effective antidepressant that is well tolerated and has significant efficacy in the treatment of MDD. associated with poor treatment outcomes.

Social Sustainability in Delivery and Procurement of Public Construction Contracts

[EN] Boosting sustainability in public construction procurement implies new challenges associated with incentivizing integrated approaches and the inclusion of sustainability criteria in tendering procedures. Thus, the choice of project-delivery method and procurement procedure is a key decision to ensure project success for sustainable outcomes. This study focused on the social dimension of sustainability and analyzed 451 tendering documents from 10 countries to assess the influence of procurement procedures and delivery methods on the inclusion of social criteria in public construction procurement. Content analysis, descriptive statistics, and logistic regression were applied. The results show the international trends in delivery methods and procurement procedures. Country and contract size were found to be the most influential variables for the inclusion of social criteria in tendering procedures. There were no significant differences between project-delivery methods and between procurement procedures with respect to the inclusion of social criteria. However, criteria associated with employment and cultural heritage were mainly considered in traditional delivery methods, whereas professional ethics and cultural heritage were associated with the lowest price procurement procedures. Finally, subjective methods were predominantly used to assess social sustainability. The authors acknowledge the financial support of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, along with FEDER funding (Project BIA2017-85098-R) and the Valencian Regional Government (Project GV/2018//085).
