    Calcium transfer and mass balance associated with soil carbonate in a semi‐arid silicate watershed (North Cameroon): an overlooked geochemical cascade?

    International audienceCalcium is a key element of the Earth system and closely coupled to the carbon cycle. Weathering of silicate releases Ca, which is exported and sequestered in oceans. However, pedogenic calcium carbonate constitutes a second Ca-trapping pathway that has received less attention. Large accumulations of pedogenic calcium carbonate nodules, associated with palaeo-Vertisols, are widespread in North Cameroon, despite a carbonate-free watershed. A previous study suggested that a significant proportion of Ca released during weathering was trapped in palaeo-Vertisols but the pathways involved in the transfer of Ca from sources (the granite and the Saharan dust) to a temporary sink (the carbonate nodules) remain unclear. This study aims to compare the distribution of elements in carbonate nodules and their associated past and present compartments for Ca in the landscape. These compartments are all characterised by a distinctive geochemical composition, resulting from specific processes. Three end members have been defined based on geochemical data: (a) the granite and its residual products, dominated by K2O and Na2O, Ti and Zr, HREE, and a positive Ce anomaly; (b) the soil parental material and the Saharan dust, dominated by Al2O3, Fe2O3 and MgO, V, HREE, and a positive Ce anomaly; and finally (c) the carbonate nodules, which are dominated by CaO, a depletion in V, Ti and Zr, and an enrichment in REE with a negative Ce anomaly. Mass balance calculations in soil profiles demonstrated that the accumulation of Ca in carbonate nodules exceeds the Ca released by chemical weathering of the parental material, because of a continuous accumulation and contribution from lateral transfers. Consequently, at the landscape scale, carbonate nodules associated with palaeo-Vertisols constitute a temporary sink for Ca. Such a spatial relationship between sources and transient compartments opens an avenue to the new concept of 'geochemical cascade', similar in terms of geochemistry, to the concept of 'sediment cascade' developed by continental sedimentologists

    Preoperative radiotherapy combined with 5 days per week capecitabine chemotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer

    There is increasing evidence supporting the use of preoperative chemoradiotherapy in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer in an attempt to facilitate complete surgical resection with clear margins. We describe our experience of using a 5-day per week regime of preoperative capecitabine chemoradiotherapy. Between November 2004 and September 2006, 70 patients with MRI-defined locally advanced rectal cancer were selected for treatment. Capecitabine was given at a dose of 900 mg m−2 for 5 days per week combined with 45 Gy of radiotherapy in 25 doses. This regime was well tolerated with 89% of our patients receiving the full dose of chemotherapy and 96% receiving the full dose of radiotherapy. Ninety-three per cent proceeded to macroscopically complete surgical resection. The pathological complete response rate was 9.2% with a node-negative rate of 66%. A negative circumferential margin was achieved by 79% of the patients who underwent resection. Compared to studies using a 7-day per week capecitabine schedule, our results show increased compliance and less dose reductions with comparable pathological outcome

    Scaling Analysis of Affinity Propagation

    We analyze and exploit some scaling properties of the Affinity Propagation (AP) clustering algorithm proposed by Frey and Dueck (2007). First we observe that a divide and conquer strategy, used on a large data set hierarchically reduces the complexity O(N2){\cal O}(N^2) to O(N(h+2)/(h+1)){\cal O}(N^{(h+2)/(h+1)}), for a data-set of size NN and a depth hh of the hierarchical strategy. For a data-set embedded in a dd-dimensional space, we show that this is obtained without notably damaging the precision except in dimension d=2d=2. In fact, for dd larger than 2 the relative loss in precision scales like N(2−d)/(h+1)dN^{(2-d)/(h+1)d}. Finally, under some conditions we observe that there is a value s∗s^* of the penalty coefficient, a free parameter used to fix the number of clusters, which separates a fragmentation phase (for s<s∗s<s^*) from a coalescent one (for s>s∗s>s^*) of the underlying hidden cluster structure. At this precise point holds a self-similarity property which can be exploited by the hierarchical strategy to actually locate its position.     LSST Active Optics System Software Architecture

    The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is an 8-meter class wide-field telescope now under construction on Cerro Pachon, near La Serena, Chile. This ground-based telescope is designed to conduct a decade-long time domain survey of the optical sky. In order to achieve the LSST scientific goals, the telescope requires delivering seeing limited image quality over the 3.5 degree field-of-view. Like many telescopes, LSST will use an Active Optics System (AOS) to correct in near real-time the system aberrations primarily introduced by gravity and temperature gradients. The LSST AOS uses a combination of 4 curvature wavefront sensors (CWS) located on the outside of the LSST field-of-view. The information coming from the 4 CWS is combined to calculate the appropriate corrections to be sent to the 3 different mirrors composing LSST. The AOS software incorporates a wavefront sensor estimation pipeline (WEP) and an active optics control system (AOCS). The WEP estimates the wavefront residual error from the CWS images. The AOCS determines the correction to be sent to the different degrees of freedom every 30 seconds. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of the AOS.     Motivic Serre invariants, ramification, and the analytic Milnor fiber

    We show how formal and rigid geometry can be used in the theory of complex singularities, and in particular in the study of the Milnor fibration and the motivic zeta function. We introduce the so-called analytic Milnor fiber associated to the germ of a morphism f from a smooth complex algebraic variety X to the affine line. This analytic Milnor fiber is a smooth rigid variety over the field of Laurent series C((t)). Its etale cohomology coincides with the singular cohomology of the classical topological Milnor fiber of f; the monodromy transformation is given by the Galois action. Moreover, the points on the analytic Milnor fiber are closely related to the motivic zeta function of f, and the arc space of X. We show how the motivic zeta function can be recovered as some kind of Weil zeta function of the formal completion of X along the special fiber of f, and we establish a corresponding Grothendieck trace formula, which relates, in particular, the rational points on the analytic Milnor fiber over finite extensions of C((t)), to the Galois action on its etale cohomology. The general observation is that the arithmetic properties of the analytic Milnor fiber reflect the structure of the singularity of the germ f.Comment: Some minor errors corrected.     Hyalocyte origin, structure, and imaging

    Hyalocytes have been recognized as resident tissue macrophages of the vitreous body since the mid-19th century. Despite this, knowledge about their origin, turnover, and dynamics is limited. Historically, initial studies on the origin of hyalocytes used light and electron microscopies. Modern investigations across species including rodents and humans will be described. Novel imaging is now available to study human hyalocytes in vivo. The shared ontogeny with retinal microglia and their eventual interdependence as well as differences will be discussed. Owing to a common origin as myeloid cells, hyalocytes and retinal microglia have similarities, but hyalocytes appear to be distinct as resident macrophages of the vitreous body.</p

    Clear sky fraction above Indonesia: an analysis for astronomical site selection

    We report a study of cloud cover over Indonesia based on meteorological satellite data, spanning over the past 15 years (from 1996 to 2010) in order to be able to select a new astronomical site capable to host a multi-wavelength astronomical observatory. High spatial resolution of meteorological satellite data acquired from {\it Geostationary Meteorological Satellite 5} ({\it GMS 5}), {\it Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 9} ({\it GOES 9}), and {\it Multi-functional Transport Satellite-1R} ({\it MTSAT-1R}) are used to derive yearly average clear fractions over the regions of Indonesia. This parameter is determined from temperature measurement of the IR3 channel (water vapor, 6.7 Ό\mum) for high altitude clouds (cirrus) and from the IR1 channel (10.7 Ό\mum) for lower altitude clouds. Accordingly, an algorithm is developed to detect the corresponding clouds. The results of this study are then adopted to select the best possible sites in Indonesia to be analysed further by performing in situ measurements planned for the coming years. The results suggest that regions of East Nusa Tenggara, located in south-eastern part of Indonesia, are the most promising candidates for such an astronomical site. Yearly clear sky fraction of this regions may reach better than 70 per cent with an uncertainty of 10 per cent.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, and 4 table
