    While the use of Chinese porcelain dishes in the stone towns along the Swahili coast has recently found much attention in art historical scholarship regarding the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries, the pre-history of these dynamics in the medieval period has up to now only been fully considered in other ïŹelds such as archaeology and anthropology. This paper sheds new light on the interrelations between the built environment and material culture in coastal East Africa from an art historical perspective, focusing on premodern Indian Ocean trajectories, the role of Chinese porcelain bowls that were immured into Swahili coral stone buildings, and on architecture across boundaries in a medieval world characterized by far-reaching transcultural entanglements and connectivity. It will show how Chinese porcelain bowls in premodern Swahili architecture linked the stone towns along the coast with other sites both inland and across the Indian Ocean and beyond, and how these dynamics were shaped by complex intersections between short-distance and long-distance-relationships and negotiations between the local and the global along the Swahili coast and beyond

    A non--linear diffusion equation is derived by taking into account hopping rates depending on the occupation of next neighbouring sites. There appears additonal repulsive and attractive forces leading to a changed local mobiltiy. The stationary and the time dependent behaviour of the system are studied based upon the master equation approach. Different to conventional diffusion it results a time dependent bump the position of which increases with time described by an anomalous diffusion exponent.     Distorted food pyramid in kids programmes: A content analysis of television advertising watched in Switzerland

    Background: In the light of increasing childhood obesity, the role of food advertisements relayed on television (TV) is of high interest. There is evidence of food commercials having an impact on children's food preferences, choices, consumption and obesity. We describe the product categories advertised during kids programmes, the type of food promoted and the characteristics of food commercials targeting children. Methods: A content analysis of the commercials aired during the kids programmes of six Swiss, one German and one Italian stations was conducted. The commercials were collected over a 6-month period in 2006. Results: Overall, 1365 h of kids programme were recorded and 11 613 advertisements were found: 3061 commercials (26.4%) for food, 2696 (23.3%) promoting toys, followed by those of media, cleaning products and cosmetics. Regarding the broadcast food advertisements, 55% were for fast food restaurants or candies. Conclusion: The results of the content analysis suggest that food advertising contributes to the obesity problem: every fourth advertisement is for food, half of them for products high in sugar and fat and hardly any for fruit or vegetables. Long-term exposure to this distortion of the pyramid of recommended food should be considered in the discussion of legal restrictions for food advertising targeting childre

    Visual exploration and retrieval of XML document collections with the generic system X2

    This article reports on the XML retrieval system X2 which has been developed at the University of Munich over the last five years. In a typical session with X2, the user first browses a structural summary of the XML database in order to select interesting elements and keywords occurring in documents. Using this intermediate result, queries combining structure and textual references are composed semiautomatically. After query evaluation, the full set of answers is presented in a visual and structured way. X2 largely exploits the structure found in documents, queries and answers to enable new interactive visualization and exploration techniques that support mixed IR and database-oriented querying, thus bridging the gap between these three views on the data to be retrieved. Another salient characteristic of X2 which distinguishes it from other visual query systems for XML is that it supports various degrees of detailedness in the presentation of answers, as well as techniques for dynamically reordering and grouping retrieved elements once the complete answer set has been computed

In these scenes, semantic segmentation methods have made huge advances in recent years. Such methods can provide useful prior information for object discovery by removing false positives and by delineating object boundaries. We propose a novel method that combines bottom-up object discovery and semantic priors for producing generic object candidates in RGB-D images. We use a deep learning method for semantic segmentation to classify colour and depth superpixels into meaningful categories. Separately for each category, we use saliency to estimate the location and scale of objects, and superpixels to find their precise boundaries. Finally, object candidates of all categories are combined and ranked. We evaluate our approach on the NYU Depth V2 dataset and show that we outperform other state-of-the-art object discovery methods in terms of recall.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Focusing on the premodern period, this image series addresses these issues through a number of case studies ranging from the Caucasus to the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean world, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the PaciïŹc. By no means exhaustive, the following case studies are analyzed paying equal attention to diverse materials, media, and their intersections from architecture and objects of material culture to maps and paintings.     Defibrotide for Prophylaxis of Hepatic Veno-Occlusive Disease in Pediatric Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: Subanalysis Data from an Open-Label, Phase III, Randomized Trial

    Introduction Hepatic veno-occlusive disease, also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (VOD/SOS), is a potentially life-threatening complication of conditioning for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and is associated with patient and transplant-related risk factors, such as prior therapies, underlying diagnoses, and conditioning regimen. Unpredictable in its occurrence and severity, VOD/SOS is clinically characterized by painful hepatomegaly, hyperbilirubinemia, ascites, and weight gain. Overall estimated prevalence is 14% post-HSCT, while rates in some high-risk populations (eg, osteopetrosis or prior gemtuzumab ozogamicin) are >60% (Wadleigh M et al. Blood . 2003;102:1578-82; Corbacioglu S et al. Bone Marrow Transplant . 2006;38:547-53). Evidence suggests that defibrotide stabilizes endothelial cells, with direct and endothelial-cell mediated restoration of the thrombo-fibrinolytic balance. Defibrotide is approved in the European Union for the treatment of severe hepatic VOD/SOS in patients receiving HSCT, and is available in the United States through an expanded-access study. In a previously reported randomized clinical trial, defibrotide prophylaxis for VOD/SOS in high-risk pediatric patients undergoing HSCT reduced the overall incidence of VOD/SOS by day +30 post-HSCT. Here we report novel subgroup analyses of VOD/SOS incidence from this trial in patients with specific VOD/SOS risk factors at baseline. Methods This was a phase 3, multicenter, open-label, randomized, controlled trial in patients aged 5% weight gain. Patients were randomized to standard care with or without defibrotide prophylaxis dosed at 25 mg/kg/day in 4 divided infusions of 6.25 mg/kg. Osteopetrosis was a stratification variable. Defibrotide began the same day as HSCT conditioning and continued for 30 days post-HSCT, or ≄14 days for patients discharged from hospital before day +30 post-HSCT. Control patients who developed VOD/SOS received defibrotide treatment. The primary endpoint was incidence of VOD/SOS at day +30 post-HSCT. Results The intent-to-treat population included 356 patients: 180 randomized to defibrotide prophylaxis and 176 in the control group. Mean (SD) age was 6.6 (5.3) years, and 40.7% of patients were female. Demographic and clinical characteristics, including VOD/SOS risk factors (Table), were well-matched in the defibrotide and control groups. The most common risk factors among all patients were conditioning with busulfan and melphalan (58%), preexisting liver disease (27%), and second myeloablative transplantation (13%). VOD/SOS occurred by day +30 post-HSCT in 22 (12%) patients in the defibrotide prophylaxis group vs 35 (20%) patients in the control group. For the stratification variable, osteopetrosis, rates of VOD/SOS were 14% in the defibrotide prophylaxis arm and 67% in the control arm (Table). Differences in rates of VOD/SOS were lowest for adrenoleukodystrophy (no cases) and prior abdominal irradiation (11% vs 13%, respectively) (Table). Conclusions Across risk-factor subgroups, the rate of VOD/SOS was lower in patients receiving defibrotide compared with controls (except adrenoleukodystrophy: no VOD/SOS in either group). In particular, rates of VOD/SOS by day +30 were reduced by ≄50% in the defibrotide arm vs the control arm among patients with osteopetrosis, hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, second myeloablative transplantation, and prior gemtuzumab treatment.     Terabyte-scale supervised 3D training and benchmarking dataset of the mouse kidney

    The performance of machine learning algorithms, when used for segmenting 3D biomedical images, does not reach the level expected based on results achieved with 2D photos. This may be explained by the comparative lack of high-volume, high-quality training datasets, which require state-of-the-art imaging facilities, domain experts for annotation and large computational and personal resources. The HR-Kidney dataset presented in this work bridges this gap by providing 1.7 TB of artefact-corrected synchrotron radiation-based X-ray phase-contrast microtomography images of whole mouse kidneys and validated segmentations of 33 729 glomeruli, which corresponds to a one to two orders of magnitude increase over currently available biomedical datasets. The image sets also contain the underlying raw data, threshold- and morphology-based semi-automatic segmentations of renal vasculature and uriniferous tubules, as well as true 3D manual annotations. We therewith provide a broad basis for the scientific community to build upon and expand in the fields of image processing, data augmentation and machine learning, in particular unsupervised and semi-supervised learning investigations, as well as transfer learning and generative adversarial networks
