(ICEÜbers)'This article discusses methodological problems of the comparison of dictatorships, and develops a typology of comparative patterns. The distinction is drawn between two dimensions in particular: an the one hand, comparisons can aim at the political system as a whole (integral comparison) or at the confrontation of important aspects (sectoral comparison). On the other hand, they either follow a 'understanding' empirical-analytical or an 'judging' or 'normative-contrasting' intention. However, it is not about establishing parity, but about the working out of characteristic differences and commonalities.' (author's abstract)

International audienceA 14.5 GHz ECR source has been designed and built at GANIL in order to improve the currents, mainly the heaviest ion beam intensities (Pb, U). We give the first results obtained with the C.W operation used on the cyclotron machines, and those we can get with the pulsed operalion mode which concerns Linacs and other machines

Changing home and workplace in Victorian London : the life of Henry Jaques shirtmaker.

The paper uses unusually rich evidence from a manuscript life history written in 1901 from personal diaries to explore the changing relationship between home and workplace in Victorian London. The life history of Henry Jaques demonstrates the way in which decisions about employment and residence were related both to each other and to stages of the family life course. The uncertainty of work, lack of income to support a growing family, rising aspirations, the constant threat of illness, the ease of moving between rented property, close ties between home and workplace, the stresses produced by home working, and the attractions of suburbanization all interacted to shape the residential and employment history of Jaques and his family. The themes exemplified by this detailed life history were also relevant to many other people. Evidence collected from a large-scale project on lifetime residential histories is used to place the experiences of Henry Jaques in a broader context, and to show how they related to the changing social and economic structure of Victorian London

The socio‐material practices of the transformation of urban food markets

    Get PDF
Focusing on the recent transformation of urban food markets in the UK, this paper applies a practice theory perspective to analyse the social practices involved in the making and doing of urban food markets. Based on fieldwork in Barnsley and Sheffield, we identify three sets of interrelated practices that are involved in the transformation of urban markets: economic diversification, traditionalisation, and technological innovation. We describe these practices as socio-material in the sense that they involve the practices of buying and selling, and other forms of social interaction, combined with the foodstuffs, infrastructure, and other material things that together constitute the contemporary marketplace. The evidence presented in this paper challenges prevalent dichotomised ways of thinking about market transformation in terms of inclusion and exclusion or modernity and tradition
