    Get PDF

AND REPRESSION IN OLGA AND ELZA, A GAROTAIn this article we will study the way Elvira Cupello Calônio’s death ispresented in two books, the biography Olga, by Fernando Morais, and the novel/documentary Elza, a Garota, by Sérgio Rodrigues, and the possibilities that here we may find a traumatic event in Brazilian’s history, repressed for some decades. I refer to Elviras’s execution by theCommunist Party in Brazil in which Luís Carlos Prestes, considered a national hero, would have participated defining the punishment to be carried out. The studies by Jan Assmann and Dominick La Capra help us understand the way these traumatic events are repressed, silenced, and emerge from different cultural manifestations, in this case, from biographies.

Industry-Scale Orchestrated Federated Learning for Drug Discovery

To apply federated learning to drug discovery we developed a novel platform in the context of European Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) project MELLODDY (grant n{\deg}831472), which was comprised of 10 pharmaceutical companies, academic research labs, large industrial companies and startups. The MELLODDY platform was the first industry-scale platform to enable the creation of a global federated model for drug discovery without sharing the confidential data sets of the individual partners. The federated model was trained on the platform by aggregating the gradients of all contributing partners in a cryptographic, secure way following each training iteration. The platform was deployed on an Amazon Web Services (AWS) multi-account architecture running Kubernetes clusters in private subnets. Organisationally, the roles of the different partners were codified as different rights and permissions on the platform and administrated in a decentralized way. The MELLODDY platform generated new scientific discoveries which are described in a companion paper.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, to appear in AAAI-23 ([IAAI-23 track] Deployed Highly Innovative Applications of AI

Non-conventional yeast species for lowering ethanol content of wines

    Get PDF
Rising sugar content in grape must, and the concomitant increase in alcohol levels in wine, are some of the main challenges affecting the winemaking industry nowadays. Among the several alternative solutions currently under study, the use of nonconventional yeasts during fermentation holds good promise for contributing to relieve this problem. Non-Saccharomyces wine yeast species comprise a high number or species, so encompassing a wider physiological diversity than Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Indeed, the current oenological interest of these microorganisms was initially triggered by their potential positive contribution to the sensorial complexity of quality wines, through the production of aroma and other sensory-active compounds. This diversity also involves ethanol yield on sugar, one of the most invariant metabolic traits of S. cerevisiae. This review gathers recent research on non-Saccharomyces yeasts, aiming to produce wines with lower alcohol content than those from pure Saccharomyces starters. Critical aspects discussed include the selection of suitable yeast strains (considering there is a noticeable intra-species diversity for ethanol yield, as shown for other fermentation traits), identification of key environmental parameters influencing ethanol yields (including the use of controlled oxygenation conditions), and managing mixed fermentations, by either the sequential or simultaneous inoculation of S. cerevisiae and non-Saccharomyces starter cultures. The feasibility, at the industrial level, of using non-Saccharomyces yeasts for reducing alcohol levels in wine will require an improved understanding of the metabolism of these alternative yeast species, as well as of the interactions between different yeast starters during the fermentation of grape must.Experimental work by researchers from ICVV is supported by the Spanish Government trough MINECO and FEDER funds: MINECO AGL2012-32064 and AGL2015-63629-R grants, INIA RM2012-00007-00-00 grant, MINECO RTC-2014-2186-2 grant, MINECO training contract for AR, MINECO Formación Postdoctoral contract for JC. O teatro de Nelson Rodrigues : moderno e nacional

    Get PDF
This work aims to analyze two plays by Nelson Rodrigues, Álbum de família and Os sete gatinhos, in the light of the drama theories exposed by Peter Szondi in Teoria do drama burguês and Teoria do drama moderno. Here we check the relationship between these two plays with the literary genre historically called drama. The changes this gender has experienced over the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries show us that historical events have strongly influenced the way Literature explores certain issues. In this sense, the decline of patriarchy in Brazil, as well as its conservation inside the social relations, is represented in an aesthetics that mixes avant-garde, comedy of manners, chanchada and drama in Nelson Rodrigues’ works. Therefore, the formal structure of Nelson’s plays unveils not only an author aware of his aesthetic resources, but also the peculiar path of drama in Brazil

Halogens in Protein−Ligand Binding Mechanism: A Structural Perspective

    No full text
International audienceHalogen atoms have been at the center of many rational medicinal chemistry applications in drug design. While fluorine and chlorine atoms are often added to enhance physicochemical properties, bromine and iodine elements are generally inserted to improve selectivity. Favorable halogen interactions such as halogen bond have been thoroughly studied through quantum mechanics and statistical analyses. Although most of the studies focus on halogen interaction through its σ-hole, hydrogen bonding also has a significant impact. Here, we present an analysis describing the interacting environment of halogen atoms in protein−ligand context. With consideration of structural redundancy in the PDB, tendencies toward specific molecular interactions consideration have been refined and implications for rational drug design with halogens further discussed. Finally, we highlight the moderate occurrence of halogen bonding and present the other roles of halogen in protein−ligand complexes, completing the medicinal chemistry guide to rational halogen interactions
