The warm interstellar medium around the Cygnus Loop
Observations of the oxygen lines [OII]3729 and [OIII]5007 in the medium
immediately beyond the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant were carried out with the
scanning Fabry-P\'erot spectrophotometer ESOP. Both lines were detected in
three different directions - east, northeast and southwest - and up to a
distance of 15 pc from the shock front. The ionized medium is in the immediate
vicinity of the remnant, as evinced by the smooth brightening of both lines as
the adiabatic shock transition (defined by the X-ray perimeter) is crossed.
These lines are usually brighter around the Cygnus Loop than in the general
background in directions where the galactic latitude is above 5 degrees. There
is also marginal (but significant) evidence that the degree of ionization is
somewhat larger around the Cygnus Loop. We conclude that the energy necessary
to ionize this large bubble of gas could have been supplied by an O8 or O9 type
progenitor or the particles heated by the expanding shock front. The second
possibility, though highly atractive, would have to be assessed by extensive

A2163: Merger events in the hottest Abell galaxy cluster II. Subcluster accretion with galaxy-gas separation
Located at z = 0.203, A2163 is a rich galaxy cluster with an intra-cluster
medium (ICM) that exhibits extraordinary properties, including an exceptionally
high X-ray luminosity, average temperature, and a powerful and extended radio
halo. The irregular and complex morphology of its gas and galaxy structure
suggests that this cluster has recently undergone major merger events that
involve two or more cluster components. In this paper, we study the gas
structure and dynamics by means of spectral-imaging analysis of X-ray data
obtained from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations. From the evidence of a cold
front, we infer the westward motion of a cool core across the E-W elongated
atmosphere of the main cluster A2163-A. Located close to a galaxy over-density,
this gas 'bullet' appears to have been spatially separated from its galaxy (and
presumably dark matter component) as a result of high-velocity accretion.
From gas brightness and temperature profile analysis performed in two
opposite regions of the main cluster, we show that the ICM has been
adiabatically compressed behind the crossing 'bullet' possibly because of shock
heating, leading to a strong departure of the ICM from hydrostatic equilibrium
in this region. Assuming that the mass estimated from the Yx proxy best
indicates the overall mass of the system and that the western cluster sector is
in approximate hydrostatic equilibrium before subcluster accretion, we infer a
merger scenario between two subunits of mass ratio 1:4, leading to a present
total system mass of M500 . The exceptional
properties of A2163 present various similarities with those of 1E0657-56, the
so-called 'bullet-cluster'. These similarities are likely to be related to a

Merging history of three bimodal clusters
We present a combined X-ray and optical analysis of three bimodal galaxy
clusters selected as merging candidates at z ~ 0.1. These targets are part of
MUSIC (MUlti--Wavelength Sample of Interacting Clusters), which is a general
project designed to study the physics of merging clusters by means of
multi-wavelength observations. Observations include spectro-imaging with
XMM-Newton EPIC camera, multi-object spectroscopy (260 new redshifts), and
wide-field imaging at the ESO 3.6m and 2.2m telescopes. We build a global
picture of these clusters using X-ray luminosity and temperature maps together
with galaxy density and velocity distributions. Idealized numerical simulations
were used to constrain the merging scenario for each system. We show that A2933
is very likely an equal-mass advanced pre-merger ~ 200 Myr before the core
collapse, while A2440 and A2384 are post-merger systems ~ 450 Myr and ~1.5 Gyr
after core collapse, respectively). In the case of A2384, we detect a
spectacular filament of galaxies and gas spreading over more than 1 h^{-1} Mpc,
which we infer to have been stripped during the previous collision. The
analysis of the MUSIC sample allows us to outline some general properties of
merging clusters: a strong luminosity segregation of galaxies in recent
post-mergers; the existence of preferential axes --corresponding to the merging
directions-- along which the BCGs and structures on various scales are aligned;
the concomitance, in most major merger cases, of secondary merging or accretion
events, with groups infalling onto the main cluster, and in some cases the
evidence of previous merging episodes in one of the main components. These
results are in good agreement with the hierarchical scenario of structure
formation, in which clusters are expected to form by successive merging events,
and matter is accreted along large--scale filaments

The COSPIX mission: focusing on the energetic and obscured Universe
Tracing the formation and evolution of all supermassive black holes,
including the obscured ones, understanding how black holes influence their
surroundings and how matter behaves under extreme conditions, are recognized as
key science objectives to be addressed by the next generation of instruments.
These are the main goals of the COSPIX proposal, made to ESA in December 2010
in the context of its call for selection of the M3 mission. In addition,
COSPIX, will also provide key measurements on the non thermal Universe,
particularly in relation to the question of the acceleration of particles, as
well as on many other fundamental questions as for example the energetic
particle content of clusters of galaxies. COSPIX is proposed as an observatory
operating from 0.3 to more than 100 keV. The payload features a single long
focal length focusing telescope offering an effective area close to ten times
larger than any scheduled focusing mission at 30 keV, an angular resolution
better than 20 arcseconds in hard X-rays, and polarimetric capabilities within
the same focal plane instrumentation. In this paper, we describe the science
objectives of the mission, its baseline design, and its performances, as

On twisted Fourier analysis and convergence of Fourier series on discrete groups
We study norm convergence and summability of Fourier series in the setting of
reduced twisted group -algebras of discrete groups. For amenable groups,
F{\o}lner nets give the key to Fej\'er summation. We show that Abel-Poisson
summation holds for a large class of groups, including e.g. all Coxeter groups
and all Gromov hyperbolic groups. As a tool in our presentation, we introduce
notions of polynomial and subexponential H-growth for countable groups w.r.t.
proper scale functions, usually chosen as length functions. These coincide with

The European Photon Imaging Camera on XMM-Newton: The MOS Cameras
The EPIC focal plane imaging spectrometers on XMM-Newton use CCDs to record
the images and spectra of celestial X-ray sources focused by the three X-ray
mirrors. There is one camera at the focus of each mirror; two of the cameras
contain seven MOS CCDs, while the third uses twelve PN CCDs, defining a
circular field of view of 30 arcmin diameter in each case. The CCDs were
specially developed for EPIC, and combine high quality imaging with spectral
resolution close to the Fano limit. A filter wheel carrying three kinds of
X-ray transparent light blocking filter, a fully closed, and a fully open
position, is fitted to each EPIC instrument. The CCDs are cooled passively and
are under full closed loop thermal control. A radio-active source is fitted for
internal calibration. Data are processed on-board to save telemetry by removing
cosmic ray tracks, and generating X-ray event files; a variety of different
instrument modes are available to increase the dynamic range of the instrument
and to enable fast timing. The instruments were calibrated using laboratory
X-ray beams, and synchrotron generated monochromatic X-ray beams before launch;
in-orbit calibration makes use of a variety of celestial X-ray targets. The
current calibration is better than 10% over the entire energy range of 0.2 to
10 keV. All three instruments survived launch and are performing nominally in
orbit. In particular full field-of-view coverage is available, all electronic
modes work, and the energy resolution is close to pre-launch values. Radiation
damage is well within pre-launch predictions and does not yet impact on the
energy resolution. The scientific results from EPIC amply fulfil pre-launch

Unacceptably High Mortality Related to Measles Epidemics in Niger, Nigeria, and Chad
BACKGROUND: Despite the comprehensive World Health Organization (WHO)/United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) measles mortality–reduction strategy and the Measles Initiative, a partnership of international organizations supporting measles mortality reduction in Africa, certain high-burden countries continue to face recurrent epidemics. To our knowledge, few recent studies have documented measles mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. The objective of our study was to investigate measles mortality in three recent epidemics in Niamey (Niger), N'Djamena (Chad), and Adamawa State (Nigeria). METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted three exhaustive household retrospective mortality surveys in one neighbourhood of each of the three affected areas: Boukoki, Niamey, Niger (April 2004, n = 26,795); Moursal, N'Djamena, Chad (June 2005, n = 21,812); and Dong District, Adamawa State, Nigeria (April 2005, n = 16,249), where n is the total surveyed population in each of the respective areas. Study populations included all persons resident for at least 2 wk prior to the study, a duration encompassing the measles incubation period. Heads of households provided information on measles cases, clinical outcomes up to 30 d after rash onset, and health-seeking behaviour during the epidemic. Measles cases and deaths were ascertained using standard WHO surveillance-case definitions. Our main outcome measures were measles attack rates (ARs) and case fatality ratios (CFRs) by age group, and descriptions of measles complications and health-seeking behaviour. Measles ARs were the highest in children under 5 y old (under 5 y): 17.1% in Boukoki, 17.2% in Moursal, and 24.3% in Dong District. CFRs in under 5-y-olds were 4.6%, 4.0%, and 10.8% in Boukoki, Moursal, and Dong District, respectively. In all sites, more than half of measles cases in children aged under 5 y experienced acute respiratory infection and/or diarrhoea in the 30 d following rash onset. Of measles cases, it was reported that 85.7% (979/1,142) of patients visited a health-care facility within 30 d after rash onset in Boukoki, 73.5% (519/706) in Moursal, and 52.8% (603/1,142) in Dong District. CONCLUSIONS: Children in these countries still face unacceptably high mortality from a completely preventable disease. While the successes of measles mortality–reduction strategies and progress observed in measles control in other countries of the region are laudable and evident, they should not overshadow the need for intensive efforts in countries that have just begun implementation of the WHO/UNICEF comprehensive strategy
