On Subexponentials, Synthetic Connectives, and Multi-level Delimited Control
International audienceWe construct a partially-ordered hierarchy of delimited control operators similar to those of the CPS hierarchy of Danvy and Filinski. However, instead of relying on nested CPS translations, these operators are directly interpreted in linear logic extended with subexponentials (i.e., multiple pairs of ! and ?). We construct an independent proof theory for a fragment of this logic based on the principle of focusing. It is then shown that the new constraints placed on the permutation of cuts correspond to multiple levels of delimited control
Modelo do processo de ação fiscal de segurança e saúde do trabalho na construção de edificações
Muitos esforços pela redução dastretanto o serviço estatal de fiscalização do cumprimento das legislações de segurança e saúde na construção de edificações seja considerado como um indutor para introdução de mudanças, seus processos operacionais pouco conhecidos. Este artigo objetiva a construção de um modelo deste processo particular de ação fiscal. Para tanto, foram realizadas entrevistas com agentes de inspeção do trabalho, gerentes de segurança e gerentes de obra, análise de documentos e acompanhamento prático de ações fiscais. Após a produção de uma versão inicial, o modelo foi revisado por um conjunto de agentes fiscais e os gerentes das empresas. O modelo construÃdo é graficamente representado por um fluxograma do processo que descreve, em especial, um ciclo de ação fiscal, sendo constituÃdo por planejamento das ações fiscais, visita de disparo, inspeção direta no empreendimento, resultados e possibilidade de aplicação dos instrumentos de intervenção, término e fatores favoráveis para abertura de novos ciclos. O modelo proposto tem função de organização e estruturação, embora seja limitado em descrever a variabilidade real que um ciclo fiscal pode apresentar
Applying human factors methods to explore ‘Work as Imagined’ and ‘Work as Done’ in the Emergency Department’s response to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear events
The Emergency Department (ED) is a complex, hectic, and high-pressured environment.
Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) events are multi-faceted emergencies and present numerous challenges to ED staff (first receivers) with large scale trauma, consequently requiring a combination of complex responses.
Human Factors and Ergonomics (HF/E) methods such as Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA) have been used in healthcare research. However, HF/E methods and theory have not been combined to understand how the ED responds to CBRN events.
This study aimed to compare Work as Imagined (WAI) and Work as Done (WAD) in the ED CBRN response in a UK based hospital. WAI was established by carrying out document analyses on a CBRN plan and WAD by exploring
first receivers response to CBRN scenario cards. The responses were converted to HTAs and compared. The WAI HTAs showed 4-8 phases of general organizational responsibilities
during a CBRN event. WAD HTAs placed emphasis on diagnosing and treating
presenting conditions. A comparison of WAI and WAD HTAs highlighted common actions and tasks. This study has identified three key differences between WAI and WAD in the ED CBRN response: 1) documentation of the
CBRN event 2) treating the patient and 3) diagnosing the presenting complaint.
Findings from this study provide an evidence base which can be used to inform future clinical policy and practice in providing safe and high quality care during CBRN events in the ED
Nomenclature and semantic description of vascular lesions in small bowel capsule endoscopy: an international Delphi consensus statement
Background and study aims \u2002Nomenclature and descriptions of small bowel (SB) vascular lesions in capsule endoscopy (CE) are scarce in the medical literature. They are mostly based on the reader's opinion and thus differ between experts, with a potential negative impact on clinical care, teaching and research regarding SBCE. Our aim was to better define a nomenclature and to give a description of the most frequent vascular lesions in SBCE. Methods \u2002A panel of 18 European expert SBCE readers was formed during the UEGW 2016 meeting. Three experts constructed an Internet-based four-round Delphi consensus, but did not participate in the voting process. They built questionnaires that included various still frames of vascular lesions obtained with a third-generation SBCE system. The 15 remaining participants were asked to rate different proposals and description of the most common SB vascular lesions. A 6-point rating scale (varying from 'strongly disagree' to 'strongly agree') was used successive rounds. The consensus was reached when at least 80\u200a% voting members scored the statement within the 'agree' or 'strongly agree'. Results \u2002Consensual terms and descriptions were reached for angiectasia/angiodysplasia, erythematous patch, red spot/dot, and phlebectasia. A consensual description was reached for more subtle vascular lesions tentatively named "diminutive angiectasia" but no consensus was reached for this term. Conclusion \u2002An international group has reached a consensus on the nomenclature and descriptions of the most frequent and relevant SB vascular lesions in CE. These terms and descriptions are useful in daily practice, for teaching and for medical research purposes
Alteration of ribosome function upon 5-fluorouracil treatment favors cancer cell drug-tolerance.
Mechanisms of drug-tolerance remain poorly understood and have been linked to genomic but also to non-genomic processes. 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), the most widely used chemotherapy in oncology is associated with resistance. While prescribed as an inhibitor of DNA replication, 5-FU alters all RNA pathways. Here, we show that 5-FU treatment leads to the production of fluorinated ribosomes exhibiting altered translational activities. 5-FU is incorporated into ribosomal RNAs of mature ribosomes in cancer cell lines, colorectal xenografts, and human tumors. Fluorinated ribosomes appear to be functional, yet, they display a selective translational activity towards mRNAs depending on the nature of their 5'-untranslated region. As a result, we find that sustained translation of IGF-1R mRNA, which encodes one of the most potent cell survival effectors, promotes the survival of 5-FU-treated colorectal cancer cells. Altogether, our results demonstrate that "man-made" fluorinated ribosomes favor the drug-tolerant cellular phenotype by promoting translation of survival genes
Germline hMSH2 and hMLH1 gene mutations in incomplete HNPCC families
Hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC) is a common hereditary disease characterized by a predisposition to an early onset of colorectal cancer. The majority of the HNPCC families carry germline mutations of either hMSH2 or hMLH1 genes, whereas germline mutations of hPMS1 and hPMS2 genes have rarely been observed. Almost all of the germline mutations reported so far concern typical HNPCC families. However, there are families that display aggregations of colon cancer even though they do not fulfil all HNPCC criteria (incomplete HNPCC families) as well as sporadic cases of early onset colon cancers that could be related to germline mutations of these genes. Therefore, we screened germline mutations of hMSH2 and hMLH1 genes in 3 groups of patients from France and Turkey: typical HNPCC (n = 3), incomplete HNPCC (n = 9) and young patients without apparent familial history (n = 7). By in vitro synthesis of protein assay, heteroduplex analysis and direct genomic sequencing, we identified 1 family with hMSH2 mutation and 5 families with hMLH1 mutations. Two of the 3 HNPCC families (66%) displayed hMLH1 germline mutations. Interestingly, 4 of 9 families with incomplete HNPCC (44%) also displayed mutations of hMSH2 or hMLH1 genes. In contrast, no germline mutation of these genes was found in 7 young patients. Our results show that germline mutations of hMSH2 and hMLH1 genes contribute to a significant fraction of familial predisposition to colon cancer cases that do not fulfil all diagnostic criteria of HNPCC. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc
The identification and analysis of making-do waste: insights from two Brazilian construction sites
Making-do has been pointed out as an important category of waste in the construction industry. It refers to a situation in which a task starts or continues without having available all the inputs required for its completion, such as materials, machinery, tools, personnel, external conditions, and information. By contrast, the literature points out that improvisation is a ubiquitous human practice even in highly structured business organizations, and plays an important role when rules and methods fail. The aim of this paper is to provide some insights on the nature of making-do as a type of waste, based on two exploratory case studies carried out on construction sites. The main contributions of this research work are concerned with the identification of different categories of making-do and its main causes. This paper also discusses some strategies for reducing making-do on construction sites
