Recent advances in the understanding and management of erectile dysfunction [version 1; referees: 2 approved]
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is important to a manâs well-being and health, since it not only affects the individual but also causes strain on a coupleâs lifestyle and relationship. There are multiple non-invasive treatments that exist for ED including lifestyle changes, oral medications (phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors), vacuum-assisted erectile devices, and intraurethral suppositories. While lifestyle changes and oral medications are typically first-line treatments for ED, more-invasive treatments including intracavernosal injections and surgically implanted prosthetic devices may be required for the management of complex cases. Additionally, novel therapies are currently being developed, and future treatment options may include shock-wave therapy, external prosthetic devices, and injection of stem cells or platelet-rich plasma. The current manuscript seeks to highlight advances in management and may eventually alter the treatment paradigm to allow more-inclusive care pathways
Southern GEMS groups II: HI distribution, mass functions and HI deficient galaxies
We investigate the neutral hydrogen (HI) content of sixteen groups for which
we have multi-wavelength data including X-ray observations. Wide-field imaging
of the groups was obtained with the 20-cm multibeam system on the 64-m Parkes
telescope. We have detected ten previously uncatalogued HI sources, one of
which has no visible optical counterpart. We examine the HI properties of the
groups, compared to their X-ray characteristics, finding that those groups with
a higher X-ray temperature and luminosity contain less HI per galaxy. The HI
content of a group depends on its morphological make-up, with those groups
dominated by early-type galaxies containing the least total HI. We determined
the expected HI for the spiral galaxies in the groups, and found that a number
of the galaxies were HI deficient. The HI deficient spirals were found both in
groups with and without a hot intra-group medium. The HI deficient galaxies
were not necessarily found at the centre of the groups, however, we did find
that two thirds of HI deficient galaxies were found within about 1 Mpc from the
group centre, indicating that the group environment is affecting the gas-loss
from these galaxies. We determined the HI mass function for a composite sample
of 15 groups, and found that it is significantly flatter than the field HI mass
function. We also find a lack of high HI-mass galaxies in groups. One possible
cause of this effect is the tidal stripping of HI gas from spiral galaxies as

Genes Associated With Psychrotolerant Bacillus cereus Group Isolates
The Bacillus cereus group comprises 18 different species, including human pathogens as well as psychrotolerant strains that are an important cause of fluid milk spoilage. To enhance our understanding of the genetic markers associated with psychrotolerance (defined here as > 1 log10 increase in cfu/mL after 21 days incubation at 6°C) among dairy-associated B. cereus group isolates, we used genetic (whole genome sequencing) and phenotypic methods [growth in Skim Milk Broth (SMB) and Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth] to characterize 23 genetically-distinct representative isolates from a collection of 503 dairy-associated isolates. Quality threshold clustering identified three categories of psychrotolerance: (i) 14 isolates that were not psychrotolerant in BHI or SMB, (ii) 6 isolates that were psychrotolerant in BHI but not in SMB, and (iii) 2 isolates that were psychrotolerant in BHI and SMB. One isolate, which was psychrotolerant in BHI broth but was just below the cut-off of >1 log10 cfu/mL increase in SMB was not assigned to a cluster. A maximum likelihood phylogeny constructed with core genome single nucleotide polymorphisms classified all psychrotolerant isolates (i.e., psychrotolerant in BHI) into clade VI (representing B. mycoides/weihenstephanensis). Analysis of correlations between gene ortholog presence or absence patterns and psychrotolerance identified 206 orthologous gene clusters that were significantly overrepresented among psychrotolerant strains, including two clusters of cold shock proteins, which were identified in 8/9 and 7/9 psychrotolerant isolates. Gene ontology analyses revealed 36 gene ontology terms that were overrepresented in psychrotolerant isolates, including putrescine catabolic processes and putrescine transmembrane transporter activity. Lastly, Hidden Markov Model searches identified three protein family motifs, including cold shock domain proteins and fatty acid hydroxylases that were significantly associated with psychrotolerance in BHI broth. Analyses of CspA sequences revealed a positive association between psychrotolerant strains and a previously identified âpsychrotolerantâ CspA sequence. Overall, our data highlight genetic and phenotypic differences in psychrotolerance among B. cereus group dairy-associated isolates and show that psychrotolerance is dependent on the growth medium. CMB-S4 Science Book, First Edition
This book lays out the scientific goals to be addressed by the
next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background experiment, CMB-S4,
envisioned to consist of dedicated telescopes at the South Pole, the high
Chilean Atacama plateau and possibly a northern hemisphere site, all equipped
with new superconducting cameras. CMB-S4 will dramatically advance cosmological
studies by crossing critical thresholds in the search for the B-mode
polarization signature of primordial gravitational waves, in the determination
of the number and masses of the neutrinos, in the search for evidence of new
light relics, in constraining the nature of dark energy, and in testing general
relativity on large scales
Observing the Evolution of the Universe
How did the universe evolve? The fine angular scale (l>1000) temperature and
polarization anisotropies in the CMB are a Rosetta stone for understanding the
evolution of the universe. Through detailed measurements one may address
everything from the physics of the birth of the universe to the history of star
formation and the process by which galaxies formed. One may in addition track
the evolution of the dark energy and discover the net neutrino mass.
We are at the dawn of a new era in which hundreds of square degrees of sky
can be mapped with arcminute resolution and sensitivities measured in
microKelvin. Acquiring these data requires the use of special purpose
telescopes such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), located in Chile, and
the South Pole Telescope (SPT). These new telescopes are outfitted with a new
generation of custom mm-wave kilo-pixel arrays. Additional instruments are in

The QUaD Galactic Plane Survey. I. Maps and Analysis of Diffuse Emission
We present a survey of ~800 deg of the galactic plane observed with the QUaD telescope. The primary products of the survey are maps of Stokes I, Q, and U parameters at 100 and 150 GHz, with spatial resolution of 5' and 3'.5, respectively. Two regions are covered, spanning approximately 245°-295° and 315°-5° in the galactic longitude l and â4° < b < +4° in the galactic latitude b. At 0°.02 square pixel size, the median sensitivity is 74 and 107 kJy sr at 100 GHz and 150 GHz respectively in I, and 98 and 120 kJy sr for Q and U. In total intensity, we find an average spectral index of α = 2.35 ± 0.01(stat) ± 0.02(sys) for |b| †1°, indicative of emission components other than thermal dust. A comparison to published dust, synchrotron, and free-free models implies an excess of emission in the 100 GHz QUaD band, while better agreement is found at 150 GHz. A smaller excess is observed when comparing QUaD 100 GHz data to the WMAP five-year W band; in this case, the excess is likely due to the wider bandwidth of QUaD. Combining the QUaD and WMAP data, a two-component spectral fit to the inner galactic plane (|b| †1°) yields mean spectral indices of α s = â0.32 ± 0.03 and α = 2.84 ± 0.03; the former is interpreted as a combination of the spectral indices of synchrotron, free-free, and dust, while the second is largely attributed to the thermal dust continuum. In the same galactic latitude range, the polarization data show a high degree of alignment perpendicular to the expected galactic magnetic field direction, and exhibit mean polarization fraction 1.38 ± 0.08(stat) ± 0.1(sys)% at 100 GHz and 1.70 ± 0.06(stat) ± 0.1(sys)% at 150 GHz. Parameter Estimation From Improved Measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background From QUaD
We evaluate the contribution of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization spectra to cosmological parameter constraints. We produce cosmological parameters using high-quality CMB polarization data from the ground-based QUaD experiment and demonstrate for the majority of parameters that there is significant improvement on the constraints obtained from satellite CMB polarization data. We split a multi-experiment CMB data set into temperature and polarization subsets and show that the best-fit confidence regions for the ÎCDM six-parameter cosmological model are consistent with each other, and that polarization data reduces the confidence regions on all parameters. We provide the best limits on parameters from QUaD EE/BB polarization data and we find best-fit parameters from the multi-experiment CMB data set using the optimal pivot scale of k = 0.013 Mpc to be {hΩ, hΩ, H, A, n, Ï} = {0.113, 0.0224, 70.6, 2.29 Ă 10, 0.960, 0.086}.Astronom
Polymorphisms near TBX5 and GDF7 are associated with increased risk for Barrett's esophagus.
BACKGROUND & AIMS: Barrett's esophagus (BE) increases the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). We found the risk to be BE has been associated with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on chromosome 6p21 (within the HLA region) and on 16q23, where the closest protein-coding gene is FOXF1. Subsequently, the Barrett's and Esophageal Adenocarcinoma Consortium (BEACON) identified risk loci for BE and esophageal adenocarcinoma near CRTC1 and BARX1, and within 100 kb of FOXP1. We aimed to identify further SNPs that increased BE risk and to validate previously reported associations. METHODS: We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify variants associated with BE and further analyzed promising variants identified by BEACON by genotyping 10,158 patients with BE and 21,062 controls. RESULTS: We identified 2 SNPs not previously associated with BE: rs3072 (2p24.1; odds ratio [OR] = 1.14; 95% CI: 1.09-1.18; P = 1.8 Ă 10(-11)) and rs2701108 (12q24.21; OR = 0.90; 95% CI: 0.86-0.93; P = 7.5 Ă 10(-9)). The closest protein-coding genes were respectively GDF7 (rs3072), which encodes a ligand in the bone morphogenetic protein pathway, and TBX5 (rs2701108), which encodes a transcription factor that regulates esophageal and cardiac development. Our data also supported in BE cases 3 risk SNPs identified by BEACON (rs2687201, rs11789015, and rs10423674). Meta-analysis of all data identified another SNP associated with BE and esophageal adenocarcinoma: rs3784262, within ALDH1A2 (OR = 0.90; 95% CI: 0.87-0.93; P = 3.72 Ă 10(-9)). CONCLUSIONS: We identified 2 loci associated with risk of BE and provided data to support a further locus. The genes we found to be associated with risk for BE encode transcription factors involved in thoracic, diaphragmatic, and esophageal development or proteins involved in the inflammatory response
