High-Intensity Discharge Lamp and Duffing Oscillator - Similarities and Differences

The processes inside the arc tube of high-intensity discharge lamps are investigated by finite element simulations. The behavior of the gas mixture inside the arc tube is governed by differential equations describing mass, energy and charge conservation as well as the Helmholtz equation for the acoustic pressure and the Navier-Stokes equation for the flow driven by the buoyancy and the acoustic streaming force. The model is highly nonlinear and requires a recursion procedure to account for the impact of acoustic streaming on the temperature and other fields. The investigations reveal the presence of a hysteresis and the corresponding jump phenomenon, quite similar to a Duffing oscillator. The similarities and, in particular, the differences of the nonlinear behavior of the high-intensity discharge lamp to that of a Duffing oscillator are discussed. For large amplitudes the high-intensity discharge lamp exhibits a stiffening effect in contrast to the Duffing oscillator.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

Arte callejero he tenido un efecto muy grande en la historia y políticos de Chile. Yo quería descubrir más sobre esta historia, y también cómo los organizaciones que hacen murales, cómo la Brigada de Ramona Parra, funciona hoy. Para mi proyecto, yo usé entrevista, guías de arte callejero, observaciones en escuelas de Bellas Artes, y un exposición de murales. En mis resultas, yo encontré que la Brigada de Ramona Parra ha cambiado la escena política en Chile y todavía tiene un rol importante en los políticos. / My motivation for this project was my interest in the power of murals in Chile, and social change that street art can begin . street art I had a big effect on the history and political Chile. The effects of social norms among peer groups on risk behavior: A multilevel approach to differentiate perceived and collective norms

Social norms have been found to be an important factor in individuals’ health and risk behaviors. Past research has typically addressed which social norms individuals perceive in their social environments (e.g., in their peer group). The present article explores normative social influences beyond such perceptions by applying a multilevel approach and differentiating between perceived norms at the individual level and collective norms at the group level. Data on norms and three road traffic risk behaviors (speeding, driving after drinking, and texting while driving) were obtained from a representative survey among young German car drivers (N = 311 anchor respondents) and their peer groups (overall N = 1,244). Multilevel modeling (MLM) revealed that beyond individual normative perceptions of peers’ behavior and approval, actual collective norms (peers’ actual risk behavior and attitudes) affect individuals’ risk behaviors. Findings are discussed with regard to theorizing normative influences on risk behavior and practical implications

Supinationstrauma: Tape oder Stabilisationsschiene? : welches Hilfsmittel bringt während der Rehabilitation eines Supinationstraumas einen besseren Nutzen?

Darstellung der Thematik: Das Supinationstrauma zählt zu den häufigsten muskuloskelettalen Verletzungen. Für die Nachbehandlung werden in der Physiotherapie das Tape und die Stabilisationsschienen häufig genutzt, wobei sich deren Anwendung in den Institutionen sowie auch zwischen den medizinischen Fachpersonen unterscheidet. Ziel: Diese Arbeit soll einen umfassenden Vergleich der Hilfsmittel Tape und Stabilisationsschiene als begleitende Massnahme während der Rehabilitation nach einem Supinationstrauma aufzeigen. Methode: Mittels vordefinierten Ein- und Ausschlusskriterien wurde in den Datenbanken CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed und Cochrane eine systematische Literaturrecherche durchgeführt. Dabei konnten vier Studien eingeschlossen werden, welche entsprechend dem Studiendesign mit dem AICA-Formular, der PEDro-Skala oder dem AMSTAR-Raster beurteilt wurden. Relevante Ergebnisse: Keine der Studien konnte einen Unterschied zwischen den Hilfsmitteln bezüglich funktionellen Outcomes evaluieren. In einer Studie erzielte die Stabilisationsschiene signifikant bessere Ergebnisse in Bezug auf die Patientenzufriedenheit. Schlussfolgerung: Die Stabilisationsschiene sowie das Tape können die Nachbehandlung von Supinationstraumata effektiv unterstützen. Bezüglich funktionellen Outcomes gibt es keinen Unterschied, jedoch kann durch die Behandlung mit einer Stabilisationsschiene eine bessere Patientenzufriedenheit erreicht werden.Background: Acute lateral ankle sprain is one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries. Tape and brace are frequently used in physiotherapy for treatment, although their use varies between institutions and also between medical professionals. Purpose: The aim of this study is to present a comprehensive comparison of the aids tape and brace as a support device during rehabilitation after acute lateral ankle sprain. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria in the CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed and Cochrane databases. Four studies were included, which were assessed according to the study design using the AICA-form, the PEDro-scale or the AMSTAR-checklist. Results: None of the studies could evaluate a difference between the aids regarding functional outcomes. In one study, the brace achieved significantly better results in terms of patient satisfaction. Conclusion: The brace as well as the tape can effectively support the treatment of lateral ankle sprain. There is no difference in functional outcomes, but better patient satisfaction can be achieved by treatment with a brace

Lake Site Assessments: US EPA TIME-New England Lakes

TIME (Temporally Integrated Monitoring of Ecosystems) is a statistically selected population of lakes in New Eng- land and the Hudson Valley (31 lakes) and the Adirondacks (43 lakes) that were selected from the original 1991 EMAP-SW (Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program–Surface Waters) population with acid neutralizing capacity less than 100 meq/L (Young & Stoddard 1996). Samples are taken annually, during a summer base-flow ‘index period’. This sampling strategy is used to reduce hydrologic impact on water chemistry and hence provide an assessment of trends in chemistry with the least number of samples (e.g., Stoddard et al. 2003). The EMAP program sampled these lakes and many others one or more times between 1991-1994. As part of EMAP, the lakes were characterized with respect to landscape features, hydrology, geology, and chemistry as well as biological studies (fish, breeding birds, zooplankton) and a paleo-limnological coring study to reconstruct pH and other variables. The program was discontinued, but some sampling of the lakes continued through other funding sources during the hiatus. In 1999, the TIME project officially began, with a goal of assessing the effectiveness of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 at reducing acidification of surface waters (Stoddard et al. 2003, Kahl et al. 2004). Nachfolgend wird die ‚Weiterqualifikation für pädagogische Berufe im Einwanderungsland Deutschland‘, ein einsemest-riger Zertifikatsstudiengang für Menschen mit im Ausland erworbenen Hochschulabschlüssen im pädagogischen Bereich, vorgestellt, der bis einschließlich Sommersemester 2022 am Lehrstuhl für Pädagogik an der Universität Augsburg angeboten wurde. Ziel war es, die vorhandenen Kenntnis-se und Fähigkeiten um Fach- und Orientierungswissen im deutschen Kontext zu ergänzen und somit eine bildungsad-äquate Beschäftigung und nachhaltige Einmündung in den Arbeitsmarkt in Deutschland zu erleichtern. Language specific preferences in anaphor resolution: Exposure or gricean maxims?

International audienceIn this paper we will present evidence for language specific preferences in anaphor resolution from two series of experiments in English, German, and French. For within sentence anaphor resolution with "before" subclauses, we will show that English and German follow the generally assumed preference for the first mentioned NP or subject of the sentence, whereas French shows a clear preference for the object of the matrix clause. We will argue that our data can most easily be explained by a usage-based account, linking comprehension preferences to production preferences
