«A daring feat»: pioneering women directors of the Portuguese press in the United States - historical and socio-symbolic aspects
The main objective of this study is to give greater visibility to the female immigrant journalists who pioneered Portuguese newspapers within the United States. It also contributes to the restoration of their collective memories, lending special attention to some socially significant moments of symbolic value, so as to understand their remarkable roles within the Portuguese-American press. Their stories reveal the efforts of these women who strove to make a career in the world of journalism, and their determination and dignity, despite their socio-cultural origins from immigrant communities with rural roots, mostly in the Azores Islands. The male-dominated society of both the Portuguese diaspora and the USA meant that the inherent discrimination of cultural and social stereotyping relegated female roles to positions of inferiority and submission. Expected to forego higher education, they were often pushed into low-skilled jobs, even while caring for children and working as housewives. Through a qualitative methodology, based on the scarce few available archival resources, the lives of women who worked as editors of the Portuguese press in the United States are set in an historical perspective. Finally, the most representative aspects are presented of two of the most singular and paradigmatic pioneers of Portuguese journalism in the United States, Laurinda C. Andrade and Mary Nunes Silveira, respectively, the editors of A Tribuna Portuguesa (New Jersey) and the Jornal Português (California), through a discussion of their biographies and their professional careers
Dynamics of quantum trajectories in chaotic systems
Quantum trajectories defined in the de Broglie--Bohm theory provide a causal
way to interpret physical phenomena. In this Letter, we use this formalism to
analyze the short time dynamics induced by unstable periodic orbits in a
classically chaotic system, a situation in which scars are known to play a very
important role. We find that the topologies of the quantum orbits are much more
complicated than that of the scarring and associated periodic orbits, since the
former have quantum interference built in. Thus scar wave functions are
necessary to analyze the corresponding dynamics. Moreover, these topologies
imply different return routes to the vicinity of the initial positions, and
this reflects in the existence of different contributions in each peak of the

Structural changes in biscuits made with cellulose emulsions as fat replacers
[EN] Biscuits are a popular baked cereal food much appreciated by consumers. In the last few years, cellulose derivatives have been successfully used as fat replacers in biscuits. In this way, not only is the total amount of fat reduced but also the saturated fatty acids and the trans fatty acids are eliminated. The aim of this study is to increase understanding of the functionality of different cellulose ether emulsions used as fat replacers in biscuits. For this purpose, three emulsions with different cellulose ethers were designed: hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, methylcellulose and methylcellulose with greater methoxyl substitution (MCH). The microstructure and textural properties of the doughs and biscuits prepared with these emulsions were studied and the effects of cellulose types and glycerol as textural improver were also analysed. The results showed that the incorporation of glycerol in the doughs made with methylcellulose and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose cellulose emulsions seems to make the dough softer, bringing the values closer to those of the control dough; however, this effect disappears once the dough is baked. Effects of Topography and Surface Soil Cover on Erosion for Mining Reclamation: The Experimental Spoil Heap at El Machorro Mine (Central Spain)
Mining reclamation tries to reduce environmental impacts, including accelerated runoff, erosion and sediment load in the nearby fluvial networks and their ecosystems. This study compares the effects of topography and surface soil cover on erosion on man-made slopes coming from surface mining reclamation in Central Spain. Two topographic profiles, linear and concave, with two surface soil covers, subsoil and topsoil, were monitored for two hydrologic years. Sediment load, rill development and plant colonization from the four profiles were measured under field conditions. The results show that, in the case of this experiment, a thick and non-compacted topsoil cover on a linear slope yielded less sediment than carbonate colluvium or topsoil cover on a concave slope. This study also shows that vegetation establishment, which plays an important role in erosion control, depends on topography. Plant cover was more widespread and more homogeneous on linear profiles with topsoil cover. On concave slopes, plant establishment was severely limited on the steepest upper part and favoured in the bottom. This study suggests that management of topography and surface soil cover should be approached systematically, taking three outcomes into consideration: (i) topsoil can lead to a successful mining reclamation regardless of topography, (ii) created concave slopes can lead to a successful mining reclamation and (iii) topography determines the vegetation colonization pattern.The experiment was funded by a research contract between the Spanish mining company

Naturally-acquired humoral immune responses against the N- and C-termini of the Plasmodium vivax MSP1 protein in endemic regions of Brazil and Papua New Guinea using a multiplex assay
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Progress towards the development of a malaria vaccine against <it>Plasmodium vivax</it>, the most widely distributed human malaria parasite, will require a better understanding of the immune responses that confer clinical protection to patients in regions where malaria is endemic.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Glutathione <it>S</it>-transferase (GST) and GST-fusion proteins representing the N- terminus of the merozoite surface protein 1 of <it>P. vivax</it>, PvMSP1-N, and the C-terminus, PvMSP1-C, were covalently coupled to BioPlex carboxylated beads. Recombinant proteins and coupled beads were used, respectively, in ELISA and Bioplex assays using immune sera of <it>P. vivax </it>patients from Brazil and PNG to determine IgG and subclass responses. Concordances between the two methods in the seropositivity responses were evaluated using the Kappa statistic and the Spearman's rank correlation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results using this methodology were compared with the classical microtitre enzyme-linked immnosorbent assay (ELISA), showing that the assay was sensitive, reproducible and had good concordance with ELISA; yet, further research into different statistical analyses seems desirable before claiming conclusive results exclusively based on multiplex assays. As expected, results demonstrated that PvMSP1 was immunogenic in natural infections of patients from different endemic regions of Brazil and Papua New Guinea (PNG), and that age correlated only with antibodies against the C-terminus part of the molecule. Furthermore, the IgG subclass profiles were different in these endemic regions having IgG3 predominantly recognizing PvMSP1 in Brazil and IgG1 predominantly recognizing PvMSP1 in PNG.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study validates the use of the multiplex assay to measure naturally-acquired IgG antibodies against the merozoite surface protein 1 of <it>P. vivax</it>.</p

professionals is required. This paper presents the
design and development ofa telemedicine distributed
system for cooperative medical diagnosis based on
two new approaches: 1) a distributed layered
architecture specially designed to add synchronous
computer supported cooperative workfeatures either
to new or existing medical applications; 2) the
definition of a methodological procedure to design
graphical user interfaces for telemedicine
cooperative working scenarios. The cooperative
work is supported by a collaborative toolkit that
provides telepointing, window sharing, coordination
and synchronization.
Finally, we have implemented and installed the
telemedicine system in clinical practice between two
hospitals, providing teleconferencing facilities for
cooperative decision support in haemodynamics

A Practical, One-Pot Synthesis of Highly Substituted Thiophenes and Benzo[b]thiophenes from Bromoenynes and o-Alkynylbromobenzenes
An efficient synthesis of thiophenes and benzo[b]thiophenes has been developed from easily available bromoenynes and o-alkynylbromobenzene derivatives. This novel one-pot procedure involves a Pd-catalyzed C–S bond formation using a hydrogen sulfide surrogate followed by a heterocyclization reaction. Resumen ejecutivo del documento de consenso sobre el manejo de la patología renal en pacientes con infección por VIH
El objetivo de este documento es actualizar las recomendaciones sobre la evaluación y el manejo de la afectación renal en pacientes con infección por el VIH del año 2010. La función renal debe monitorizarse en todos los pacientes e incluir la medida de la concentración sérica de creatinina, la estimación del filtrado glomerular (ecuación CKD-EPI), la medida del cociente proteína/creatinina en orina y un sedimento urinario. El estudio básico de la función tubular ha de incluir la concentración sérica de fosfato y la tira reactiva de orina (glucosuria). En ausencia de alteraciones, el cribado será anual. En pacientes tratados con tenofovir o con factores de riesgo para el desarrollo de enfermedad renal crónica (ERC), se recomienda una evaluación más frecuente. Se debe evitar el uso de antirretrovirales potencialmente nefrotóxicos en pacientes con ERC o factores de riesgo para evitar su progresión. También se revisan las indicaciones de la biopsia renal, cuándo enviar el paciente al nefrólogo y las indicaciones, evaluación y manejo del paciente en diálisis o del trasplante renal
Microsatellite Genotyping of Plasmodium vivax Isolates from Pregnant Women in Four Malaria Endemic Countries
Plasmodium vivax is the most widely distributed human parasite
and the main cause of human malaria outside the African
continent. However, the knowledge about the genetic variability
of P. vivax is limited when compared to the information
available for P. falciparum. We present the results of a study
aimed at characterizing the genetic structure of P. vivax
populations obtained from pregnant women from different malaria
endemic settings. Between June 2008 and October 2011 nearly 2000
pregnant women were recruited during routine antenatal care at
each site and followed up until delivery. A capillary blood
sample from the study participants was collected for genotyping
at different time points. Seven P. vivax microsatellite markers
were used for genotypic characterization on a total of 229 P.
vivax isolates obtained from Brazil, Colombia, India and Papua
New Guinea. In each population, the number of alleles per locus,
the expected heterozygosity and the levels of multilocus linkage
disequilibrium were assessed. The extent of genetic
differentiation among populations was also estimated. Six
microsatellite loci on 137 P. falciparum isolates from three
countries were screened for comparison. The mean value of
expected heterozygosity per country ranged from 0.839 to 0.874
for P. vivax and from 0.578 to 0.758 for P. falciparum. P. vivax
populations were more diverse than those of P. falciparum. In
some of the studied countries, the diversity of P. vivax
population was very high compared to the respective level of
endemicity. The level of inter-population differentiation was
moderate to high in all P. vivax and P. falciparum populations
