Environmentally compliant organic–inorganic hybrid coatings for efficient corrosion protection of metallic surfaces are potential alternatives to the current method based on chromate passivation. In this context PMMA–siloxane–silica (PMMA–SS) hybrid films were prepared using the sol–gel process from the radical copolymerization of methyl methacrylate and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate followed by acidic hydrolysis and polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), under variation of the ethanol to H2O ratio (0.0–1.0). The structural properties of about 2 μm thick coatings, deposited by dip-coating onto carbon steel, were related with their corrosion protection efficiency. The correlation of data obtained by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and small angle X-ray scattering has shown for intermediate ethanol to H2O ratios the highest connectivity (∼83%) of the inorganic phase, bonded covalently to organic moieties, yielding a dense and homogeneous nanocomposite structure with high thermal stability, very good adhesion to the metallic substrate and excellent barrier properties. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements have shown for coatings prepared at intermediate EtOH/H2O ratios a high corrosion resistance of almost 10 GΩ cm2, which remained unchanged for more than 6 months in contact with 3.5% NaCl solution and more than 3 months exposed to an acidic NaCl environment

Brazil has a history of blooms and contamination of freshwater systems by cyanobacterial toxins. The monitoring relevance of toxins from cyanobacteria in reservoirs for public supply is notorious given its high toxicity to mammals, included humans beings. The most recurrent toxins in Brazilian water bodies are microcystins (MC). However, the recent record of cylindrospermopsin (CYN) in northeastern Brazil, Pernambuco state, alerts us to the possibility that this could be escalating. This study reports occurrence of MC and CYN, quantified with ELISA, in 10 reservoirs, devoted to public drinking supply in northeastern Brazil. The composition and quantification of the cyanobacteria community associated with these water bodies is also presented. From 23 samples investigated for the presence of MC, and CYN, 22 and 8 out were positive, respectively. Considering the similarity of the cyanobacteria communities found in reservoirs from Pernambuco, including toxin-producing species associated to MC and CYN, we suggest that geographic spreading can be favored by these factors.

The copolymerisation of 3,3'" Dihexyl-2,2':5',2":5",2'"-quaterthiophene (DHQT) and (R)-(-)-3-(1-pyrrolyl)propyl-N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-α-phenylglycinate (DNBP) was successfully performed electrochemically in acetonitrile (CH3CN) containing tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate ((C4H9)4NBF4) by direct oxidation of monomer mixtures in different feed ratios. Copolymerisation improved the properties of the films of both polymers PDHQT and PDNBP, in respect to the adhesion of PDHQT onto ITO/glass surface and the chromatic contrast of these electrochromic materials. PDHQT, PDNBP and P(DHQT-co-DNBP) films were characterised by FTIR spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and spectroelectrochemical techniques. Solutions of PDHQT and its copolymers with DNBP (independently of the feed ratio) in N-methylpyrrolidone are fluorescent with emission bands at 555 and 585 nm when excited at 375 nm. Reversible changes in the hue and saturation occur in all the copolymer films from yellow or orange in the reduced state to green or blue in the oxidised state, but were dependent on the proportion of the comonomers used to prepare the copolymers. These changes are more significant for P(DHQT-co-DNBP) films deposited onto ITO/glass with 1:5 feed ratio, as shown by the track of the CIE 1931 xy chromaticity coordinates and by the electrochromic parameters in which this film (thickness 0.8±0.2 μm) presented chromatic contrast (Δ%T) at 660 nm of 62%, coloration efficiency (η) of 266 cm2 C-1 and stability to redox cycling (Δ%T=17% at the 1000th cycle). Therefore, these copolymers are potentially applicable in displays and optoelectronic devices as electrochromic and fluorescent materials

Microbial communities in marine environments are ecologically relevant as intermediaries of energy, and play an important role in nutrient regeneration cycles as decomposers of dead and decaying organic matter. In this sense, marine-derived fungi can be considered as a source of enzymes of industrial and/or environmental interest. Fungal strains isolated from different substrates, such as invertebrates, decaying wood, seawater, sediments, and mangrove detritus, have been reported to be producers of hydrolytic and/or oxidative enzymes, with alginate lyase, amylase, cellulase, chitinase, glucosidase, inulinase, keratinase, ligninase, lipase, nuclease, phytase, protease, and xylanase being among the enzymes produced by fungi of marine origin. These enzymes present temperature and pH optima ranging from 35 to 70 degrees C, and 3.0 to 11.0, respectively. High-level production in bioreactors is mainly performed using submerged-state fermentation. Certain marine-derived fungal strains present enzymes with alkaline and cold-activity characteristics, and salinity is considered an important condition in screening and production processes. The adaptability of marine-derived fungi to oceanic conditions can be considered an attractive point in the field of fungal marine biotechnology. In this review, we focus on the advances in discovering enzymes from marine-derived fungi and their biotechnological relevance.6Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)FAPESP [2013/19486-0, 2013/08617-7]CNPq [304103/2013-6, 301248/2010-9]FAPESP [FAPESP 2009/18399-1, FAPESP 2011/18769-3, FAPESP 2008/06720-7, FAPESP 2012/12622-3, FAPESP 2013/12505-0, FAPESP 2014/12430-2, CNPq 159488/2014, FAPESP 2013/00286-1

Characterization of Demolished Concretes with Three Different Strengths for Recycling as Coarse Aggregate

    Get PDF
This paper presents a physical characterization for the recycling into new concretes of three comminuted concretes: C16/20 (“ordinary concrete”), C50/60 (“high strength concrete”), and C70/85 (“very high strength concrete”). The top size of the crushed concretes was 19.1 mm and the size range was 4.75 to 19.1 mm. The characterization was carried out with coarse aggregate liberation, to be prepared and concentrated in a gravity concentration process. The density distribution of the coarse aggregate, cement paste, and sand was carried out in different size ranges (4.75/19.1 mm; 4.75/8.0 mm; 8.0/12.5 mm; and 12.5/19.1 mm) for the three concretes studied. The form factor of the samples, as well as the porosity determination of particles in different density ranges, are presented. The obtained results indicate that the coarse aggregate liberation was more intensive for the low resistance concrete (C16/20), but a reasonable coarse aggregate recovery is possible for all concretes

β-carboline and canthinone alkaloids are widely distributed in the Angiosperms. Due to their diverse biological activities, the structures of these alkaloids have been used as important models for the synthesis of novel therapeutic drugs. Combining high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) has provided a valuable tool in the analysis of these alkaloids in, for example, plants, insects, marine creatures, human tissues and body fluids. In this review, we summarized the main β-carboline and canthinone alkaloids studied by liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) associated with mass analyzers, molecular weight information, mass fragmentation and biological activities, presenting an overview of increasing interest for carboline alkaloids study by LC-HRMS

Acute exercise induce endothelial nitric oxide synthase phosphorylation via Akt and AMP-activated protein kinase in aorta of rats: Role of reactive oxygen species

    Get PDF
AbstractBackgroundAcute exercise increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). H2O2 promotes endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activation and phosphorylation in endothelial cells. With this in mind, the present study was designed to evaluate ex vivo eNOS phosphorylation in rat aortas incubated with H2O2 and to test this hypothesis in vivo in the aortas of rats submitted to acute exercise.MethodsFor ex vivo studies, six groups of aortic tissue were formed: control, H2O2, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), LY294002, compound C, and LY294002 plus compound C. While incubation with H2O2 increased Akt, AMPK and eNOS phosphorylation, pre-incubation with NAC strongly reduced the phosphorylation of these enzymes. For in vivo studies, male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control, cont+NAC, exercise, and exer+NAC. After a 3h swimming session, animals were decapitated and aortas were excised for biochemical and immunoblotting analysis.ResultsAcute exercise increased superoxide levels and dichlorofluorescein (DCF) concentrations, and this increase was related to phosphorylation of Akt, AMPK and eNOS. On the other hand, use of NAC reduced superoxide levels and DCF concentration. Reduced superoxide levels and DCF in the exer+NAC group were associated with decreased Akt, AMPK and eNOS phosphorylation. These results appear to be connected with vascular function because VASP phosphorylation increased in acute exercise and decreased in exer+NAC.ConclusionOur results indicate that ROS induced by acute exercise play the important role of activating eNOS, a process apparently mediated by Akt and AMPK
