    Uso de la secuencia volumétrica eco gradiente recombinada de ecos múltiples en resonancia magnética de rodilla

    Analiza el uso de la secuencia eco gradiente recombinada de eco múltiple en resonancia de rodilla. El estudio fue de enfoque cuantitativo, de tipo observacional, prospectivo y de corte transversal, estuvo conformado por 208 estudios de imágenes por resonancia magnética de rodilla, obtenidas de abril a agosto del 2020. Los resultados según indicadores sexo y edad no presentaron mayor variación, en las imágenes por resonancia magnética de rodilla por la secuencia MERGE 3D se encontró una cantidad de indicadores que presentaron valores mayores a 100 puntos, por ende, presentan buena visibilidad de imagen. En las imágenes por resonancia magnética por la secuencia CUBE 3D la mayoría de sus indicadores por valores mayores a los 100 puntos, teniendo solo 3 indicadores por debajo de ese valor. Las imágenes obtenidas por resonancia magnética de rodilla de la secuencia CUBE 3D tienen prioridad en las imágenes de tendones, medula ósea y ligamentos y la secuencia MERGE 3D en la obtención de imágenes del ligamento rotuliano y almohadilla grasa infra patelar. Las resonancias magnéticas de rodilla con la secuencia CUBE 3D obtuvieron mejores valores en forma global en relación al análisis de los indicadores anatómicos, además se recomienda para el uso específico de los de medición de ligamentos tanto cruzados anteriores como posterior

    Land use change and ecosystem service provision in Pampas and Campos grasslands of southern South America

    New livestock production models need to simultaneously meet the increasing global demand for meat and preserve biodiversity and ecosystem services. Since the 16th century beef cattle has been produced on the Pampas and Campos native grasslands in southern South America, with only small amounts of external inputs. We synthesised 242 references from peer-reviewed and grey literature published between 1945 and mid-2015 and analysed secondary data to examine the evidence on the ecosystem services provided by this grassland biodiversity hotspot and the way they are affected by land use changes and their drivers. The analysis followed the requirements of systematic review from the PRISMA statement (Moher et al 2009 Acad. Clin. Ann. Intern. Med. 151 264–9). The Pampas and Campos provide feed for 43 million heads of cattle and 14 million sheep. The biome is habitat of 4000 native plant species, 300 species of birds, 29 species of mammals, 49 species of reptiles and 35 species of amphibians. The soils of the region stock 5% of the soil organic carbon of Latin America on 3% of its area. Driven by high prices of soybean, the soybean area increased by 210% between 2000 and 2010, at the expense of 2 million ha (5%) of native grassland, mostly in the Pampas. Intensification of livestock production was apparent in two spatially distinct forms. In subregions where cropping increased, intensification of livestock production was reflected in an increased use of grains for feed as part of feedlots. In subregions dominated by native grasslands, stocking rates increased. The review showed that land use change and grazing regimes with low forage allowances were predominantly associated with negative effects on ecosystem service provision by reducing soil organic carbon stocks and the diversity of plants, birds and mammals, and by increasing soil erosion. We found little quantitative information on changes in the ecosystem services water provision, nutrient cycling and erosion control. We discuss how changing grazing regimes to higher forage allowance can contribute to greater meat production and enhancing ecosystem services from native grasslands.     Decomposition disentangled: A test of the multiple mechanisms by which nitrogen enrichment alters litter decomposition

    1. Nitrogen (N) enrichment has direct effects on ecosystem functioning by altering soil abiotic conditions and indirect effects by reducing plant diversity and shifting plant functional composition from dominance by slow to fast growing species. Litter decomposition is a key ecosystem function and is affected by N enrichment either by a change in litter quality (the recalcitrance of the plant material) or through a change in soil quality (the abiotic and biotic components of the soil that affect decomposition). How the direct and indirect effects of N alter soil and litter quality remains poorly known. 2. We designed a large grassland field experiment manipulating N enrichment, plant species richness and functional composition in a full factorial design. We used three complementary litterbag experiments, combined in a structural equation model (SEM), to quantify the effects of the treatments and various measures of functional composition and diversity on litter and soil quality and overall decomposition. 3. Our results revealed multiple drivers of litter quality and showed that nutrient concentrations (N and calcium) were about twice as important as structural components (leaf dry matter content, fibres) in determining litter quality. Overall the experimental results suggest that N enrichment increases litter decomposition mostly indirectly through a shift in functional composition toward faster growing plant species, producing higher quality litter. N enrichment also altered soil quality and thereby litter decomposition, through its effects on vegetation cover. 4. Our approach provides a mechanistic tool to test the drivers of litter decomposition across different ecosystems. Our results show that litter quality is determined by several nutrient and structure traits and highlight the importance of considering shifts in plant species composition when assessing the effects of N enrichment on decomposition.This study was supported by funding of the Swiss National Science Foundation.     Characterization of Domiphen Bromide as a New Fast-Acting Antiplasmodial Agent Inhibiting the Apicoplastidic Methyl Erythritol Phosphate Pathway

    The evolution of resistance by the malaria parasite to artemisinin, the key component of the combination therapy strategies that are at the core of current antimalarial treatments, calls for the urgent identification of new fast-acting antimalarials. The apicoplast organelle is a preferred target of antimalarial drugs because it contains biochemical processes absent from the human host. Fosmidomycin is the only drug in clinical trials targeting the apicoplast, where it inhibits the methyl erythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway. Here, we characterized the antiplasmodial activity of domiphen bromide (DB), another MEP pathway inhibitor with a rapid mode of action that arrests the in vitro growth of Plasmodium falciparum at the early trophozoite stage. Metabolomic analysis of the MEP pathway and Krebs cycle intermediates in 20 mu M DB-treated parasites suggested a rapid activation of glycolysis with a concomitant decrease in mitochondrial activity, consistent with a rapid killing of the pathogen. These results present DB as a model compound for the development of new, potentially interesting drugs for future antimalarial combination therapies

    ALMA observations of Elias 2–24: a protoplanetary disk with multiple gaps in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud

    We present ALMA 1.3 mm continuum observations at 0. 2 (25 au) resolution of Elias 2–24, one of the largest and brightest protoplanetary disks in the Ophiuchus Molecular Cloud, and we report the presence of three partially resolved concentric gaps located at ∼20, 52, and 87 au from the star. We perform radiative transfer modeling of the disk to constrain its surface density and temperature radial profile and place the disk structure in the context of mechanisms capable of forming narrow gaps such as condensation fronts and dynamical clearing by actively forming planets. In particular, we estimate the disk temperature at the locations of the gaps to be 23, 15, and 12 K (at 20, 52, and 87 au, respectively), very close to the expected snowlines of CO (23–28 K) and N2 (12–15 K). Similarly, by assuming that the widths of the gaps correspond to 4–8× the Hill radii of forming planets (as suggested by numerical simulations), we estimate planet masses in the range of 0.2 1.5 – MJup, 1.0 8.0 – MJup, and 0.02 0.15 – MJup for the inner, middle, and outer gap, respectively. Given the surface density profile of the disk, the amount of “missing mass” at the location of each one of these gaps (between 4 and 20 MJup) is more than sufficient to account for the formation of such planets.Fil: Cieza, Lucas A.. Additional information such as the sowing date, area of each site, coordinates, method and equipment used for phenophase data estimation, and photos of the France sites are also provided. The georeferenced ground-truth dataset provides a solid base for a better understanding of crop growth and can be used to validate the retrieval of phenological stages from remote sensing data

    Sistema de generación y adquisición de señales acústicas para estudios de cancelación activa de ruido

    Se presenta un sistema de adquisición de datos desarrollado para el laboratorio de acústica de la empresa ASA de México S.A. de C.V. El sistema está basado en un arreglo de 16 bocinas que generan señales a las cuales se puede modificar su frecuencia, amplitud y fase usando una interfaz gráfica. El objetivo principal de las manipulaciones de las señales es estudiar los efectos de la superposición de ondas en el espacio y su aplicación en la atenuación de ruido por métodos activos. La instrumentación del sistema se lleva a cabo con un arreglo de 8 micrófonos que de manera simultánea miden la presión sonora y generan los datos para una gráfica de distribución acústica
