    Thermally assisted interlayer magnetic coupling through Ba0.05Sr0.95TiO3 barriers

    We report on the interlayer exchange coupling across insulating barriers observed on Ni80Fe20/Ba0.05Sr0.95TiO3/La0.66Sr0.33MnO3 (Py/BST0.05/LSMO) trilayers. The coupling mechanism has been analyzed in terms of the barrier thickness, samples' substrate, and temperature. We examined the effect of MgO (MGO) and SrTiO3 (STO) (001) single-crystalline substrates on the magnetic coupling and also on the magnetic anisotropies of the samples in order to get a deeper understanding of the magnetism of the structures. We measured a weak coupling mediated by spin-dependent tunneling phenomena whose sign and strength depend on barrier thickness and substrate. An antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange prevails for most of the samples and smoothly increases with the barrier thicknesses as a consequence of the screening effects of the BST0.05. The coupling monotonically increases with temperature in all the samples and this behavior is attributed to thermally assisted mechanisms. The magnetic anisotropy of both magnetic components has a cubic symmetry that in the case of permalloy is added to a small uniaxial component.Fil: Carreira, Santiago José.     The internal rotation profile of the B-type star KIC10526294 from frequency inversion of its dipole gravity modes and statistical model comparison

    The internal angular momentum distribution of a star is key to determine its evolution. Fortunately, the stellar internal rotation can be probed through studies of rotationally-split non-radial oscillation modes. In particular, detection of non-radial gravity modes (g modes) in massive young stars has become feasible recently thanks to the Kepler space mission. Our aim is to derive the internal rotation profile of the Kepler B8V star KIC 10526294 through asteroseismology. We interpret the observed rotational splittings of its dipole g modes using four different approaches based on the best seismic models of the star and their rotational kernels. We show that these kernels can resolve differential rotation the radiative envelope if a smooth rotational profile is assumed and the observational errors are small. Based on Kepler data, we find that the rotation rate near the core-envelope boundary is well constrained to 163±89163\pm89 nHz. The seismic data are consistent with rigid rotation but a profile with counter-rotation within the envelope has a statistical advantage over constant rotation. Our study should be repeated for other massive stars with a variety of stellar parameters in order to deduce the physical conditions that determine the internal rotation profile of young massive stars, with the aim to improve the input physics of their models.Comment: 52 pages, 32 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Performance Metrics for the Objective Assessment of Capacitive Deionization Systems

    In the growing field of capacitive deionization (CDI), a number of performance metrics have emerged to describe the desalination process. Unfortunately, the separation conditions under which these metrics are measured are often not specified, resulting in optimal performance at minimal removal. Here we outline a system of performance metrics and reporting conditions that resolves this issue. Our proposed system is based on volumetric energy consumption (Wh/m3^3) and throughput productivity (L/h/m2^2) reported for a specific average concentration reduction, water recovery, and feed salinity. To facilitate and rationalize comparisons between devices, materials, and operation modes, we propose a nominal standard testing condition of removing 5 mM from a 20 mM NaCl feed solution at 50% water recovery for CDI research. Using this separation, we compare the desalination performance of a flow-through electrode (fte-CDI) cell and a flow between membrane (fb-MCDI) device, showing how significantly different systems can be compared in terms of generally desirable desalination characteristics. In general, we find that performance analysis must be considered carefully so to not allow for ambiguous separation conditions or the maximization of one metric at the expense of another. Additionally, for context we discuss a number of important underlying performance indicators and cell characteristics that are not performance measures in and of themselves but can be examined to better understand differences in performance

    The implementation of songs to promote vocabulary learning in the primary classroom

    Este proyecto de aula se llevó a cabo por dos profesores de inglés practicantes en una escuela primaria pública con estudiantes de grado tercero. El objetivo principal fue utilizar canciones en inglés con el fin de explorar, informar y reflexionar sobre la comprensión de vocabulario de los estudiantes. En esta implementación, el marco teórico implicado develó conceptos notables acerca de cómo enseñar vocabulario por parte de autores como (Howard, 2000), (Alali y Schmitt, 2012), y (Grigg, 2012), y el uso de la música en el aula por (Arntson, 2013), y (Murphey, 1990). Además, la revisión de la literatura muestra diferentes investigaciones relacionadas con el uso de canciones para enseñar vocabulario. Con base a la reflexión de los practicantes y del observador después de la aplicación se descubrió que el uso de la música en inglés tuvo un efecto positivo en la actitud de los alumnos y el aprendizaje en el salón de clase. Los resultados mostraron que los estudiantes tomaron ventaja de esta implementación cuando las canciones propuestas se llevaron a cabo teniendo en cuenta su nivel de competencia, cuando se usaron modelos, y también al utilizar ayudas visuales. Por lo tanto, la adaptación de canciones como una herramienta para enseñar inglés no debe ser ignorada puesto que los alumnos respondieron de manera positiva durante el proceso. Además, este proyecto proporcionó un ambiente favorable en el que los estudiantes se mostraron estimulados e interesados durante el proceso de aprendizaje

    Information Management to Mitigate Loss of Control Airline Accidents

    Loss of control inflight continues to be the leading contributor to airline accidents worldwide and unreliable airspeed has been a contributing factor in many of these accidents. Airlines and the FAA developed training programs for pilot recognition of these airspeed events and many checklists have been designed to help pilots troubleshoot. In addition, new aircraft designs incorporate features to detect and respond in such situations. NASA has been using unreliable airspeed events while conducting research recommended by the Commercial Aviation Safety Team. Even after significant industry focus on unreliable airspeed, research and other evidence shows that highly skilled and trained pilots can still be confused by the condition and there is a lack of understanding of what the associated checklist(s) attempts to uncover. Common mode failures of analog sensors designed for measuring airspeed continue to confound both humans and automation when determining which indicators are correct. This paper describes failures that have occurred in the past and where/how pilots may still struggle in determining reliable airspeed when confronted with conflicting information. Two latest generation aircraft architectures will be discussed and contrasted. This information will be used to describe why more sensors used in classic control theory will not solve the problem. Technology concepts are suggested for utilizing existing synoptic pages and a new synoptic page called System Interactive Synoptic (SIS). SIS details the flow of flight critical data through the avionics system and how it is used by the automation. This new synoptic page as well as existing synoptics can be designed to be used in concert with a simplified electronic checklist (sECL) to significantly reduce the time to configure the flight deck avionics in the event of a system or sensor failure

    Durante la práctica de entrenamientos funcionales ocurren lesiones, afectando principalmente a los miembros inferiores, siendo las causas que las originan muy diversas, desde un mal procedimiento hasta una mala posición de acuerdo al tipo de ejercicio desarrollado dentro de los gimnasios funcionales, el fin de este estudio es describir el gesto motor del salto a cajón, para prevenir el riesgo de lesiones en rodilla, mediante un análisis biomecánico en 16 corredores de fondo, que entrenan en FIT by TRE Quito – Ecuador. Se trabajó sobre una población específica que se encuentra conformada por atletas de entre 18 y 40 años de edad de ambos sexos y que además realizan ejercicios funcionales. En el estudio realizado se llegó a la conclusión que los grados de flexo – extensión en la rodilla pueden ser uno de los principales factores de riesgo para ocasionar lesiones de esta articulación, así como realizar una correcta ejecución del box jump puede prevenir lesiones en rodilla. Una vez realizado el Salto a cajón se determinó en dos instancias su ejecución, siendo que el 87,5% de los deportistas tuvo una mala ejecución frente a un 12,5% que si lo realizó correctamente

    Differential Response Of Early And Intermediate Flowering Strawberry Cultivars To Nursery Late-Season Nitrogen Applications And Digging Date

    The response of ‘Ventana’, an early flowering cultivar, and ‘Camarosa’, an intermediate flowering cultivar, to nursery late-season nitrogen (N) applications and digging date were studied in strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch). Two experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, runner plants dug on September 20 and October 11 from a high-latitude nursery in California, were established in growth chambers set at 25°/15ºC day/night temperature, 12-h photoperiod, and grown for 90 days. Compared to the first experiment, in the second experiment plants received extra N (foliar-applied) in the nursery in late summer, and runner plants were not grown in GC but in open field (Irvine, California). In the second experiment, runner plants were dug on Sept 20 and Oct 2. In both experiments, plants dug in September were exposed to ~100 chilling units (CU: hours ≤7.2°C) and plants dug in October were exposed to ~300 CU. As a result, October-dug plants had greater crown and root dry weight, and greater concentration of starch and total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) in leaves, crowns and roots, compared to September-dug plants. In control plants, from September to October, root TNC concentration increased in ‘Camarosa’ from ~6% to ~11%, and in ‘Ventana’ from ~14% to ~21%, and leaf N concentration ranged from 1.47 to 1.81% in ‘Camarosa’, and from 1.60 to 1.96% in ‘Ventana’. Late summer N applications increased plant N concentration and early-season yields. Late-summer nursery N applications reduced dead leaf biomass (DLB) and dead leaf area (DLA) in both cultivars, although ‘Ventana’ had lower DLB and DLA than ‘Camarosa’. ‘Ventana’ had a greater leaf number and flowered earlier, and had greater early fruit production than ‘Camarosa’. The genetic earliness of ‘Ventana’ would be correlated with the potential of the plant for accumulation of higher initial levels of leaf N and root TNC, and for having greater leaf longevity, compared to ‘Camarosa’.EEA FamailláFil: Kirschbaum, Daniel Santiago.
