Objectives: To evaluate the effect of root canal sealers (RCS) and specimen aging on the bond strength of fibre posts to bovine intraradicular dentin. Material and Methods: 80 teeth were used according the groups - Sealapextm, Sealer 26®, AH Plus® and speci - mens aging - test with no aging and with aging. The canals prepared were fi lled using one of each RCS. The posts were cemented. Roots were cross-sectioned to obtain two slices of each third. Samples were submitted to push-out test. Failure mode was evaluated under a confocal microscope. The data were analysed by ANOVA, Tukey's, and Dunnet tests (? = 0.05). Results: No signi fi cant difference was detected among RCS. Aged control presented higher bond strength than immediate control. The aging did not result significant difference. Adhesive cement-dentin failure was prevalent in all groups. Conclusions: RCS interfered negatively with bonding of fibreglass posts cemented with self-adhesive resin cement to intraradicular dentin

To obtain high seed quality, good fertilization practices are essential due to its influence not only on seed yield and weight, but also controlling the development of seedlings anomalies. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different forms of fertilization on yield and physiological quality of upland rice seeds. It was used nitrogen fertilization in coverage as urea and foliar fertilization with macro and micronutrients. The treatments consist of various sources and forms of fertilization, in a randomized block design, as follows: covering at tillering with N at 34 kg ha-1; covering at floral primordium with N at 34 kg ha-1; foliar fertilization at tillering; foliar fertilization in floral primordium; covering with N at 34 kg ha-1 in tillering and foliar fertilization in floral primordium; only basic fertilization and treatment without fertilization. The results showed that the application of nitrogen fertilizer with urea, at tillering and floral primordium at 34 kg ha-1 of N increased the production of rice seeds. In addition, coverage with urea and foliar fertilization containing macro and micronutrients increased rice seeds yield and physiological quality. To obtain high seed quality, good fertilization practices are essential due to its influence not only on seed yield and weight, but also controlling the development of seedlings anomalies. Paragangliomas or extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas are rare tumors that arise from chromaffin tissues and tend to occur either sporadically or in the context of complex genetic disorders. They are clinically heterogeneous in nature - symptoms deriving either from the secretory profile of the tumor or from the mass effect of the neoplasm. Dermatologic symptoms are quite seldom described in the literature and have been classified in acute or chronic. The case of a 40 YO Caucasian female that had been enduring for the last 2 years recurring self-limited episodes of angioedema, diarrhoea, chest pain, hypertension or hypotension, dyspnoea and anxiety is reported. Biochemical studies and further imagiologic work up and, later on, pathologic exam allowed to identify a paraganglioma that drained to the left renal artery. Upon surgery, during tumor manipulation, the patient developed an additional systemic crisis that required active life support. Recovery was regular, with a quick and sustained normalization of lab results as well as on the clinical side, with no further episode for the last 17 years.

The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological characteristics and clinical outcome of children hospitalized with COVID-19 and identify the risk factors for severe disease. All hospital admissions of pediatric patients between March and December 2020 in the southern region of Brazil were reviewed and the patients positive for RT-PCR for SARS-CoV-2 were identified. This region encompasses a population of over 2.8 million children and adolescents. Data were extracted from a national database that includes all cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome requiring hospitalization in Brazil. A total of 288 hospitalizations (51.3% female) with a median age of 3 years (interquartile range 0-12 years) were identified. Of these, 38.9% had chronic medical conditions, 55.6% required some form of supplementary oxygen, and 30.2% were admitted to an intensive care unit. There were 17 deaths (5.9%) related to COVID-19. Age less than 30 days was significantly associated with increased odds of critical illness (OR 9.52, 95% CI 3.01-30.08), as well as the presence of one chronic condition (OR 5.08 95% CI 2.78-9.33) or two or more chronic conditions (OR 6.60, 95% CI 3.17-13.74). Conclusion: Age under 30 days old and presence of chronic conditions were strongly associated with unfavorable outcomes in Brazilian children with SARS-CoV-2 infection. These findings could help local public health authorities to develop specific policies to protect this more vulnerable group of children

The concentration of pineapple juice is needed to retain the bromelain activity and to standardize the composition and proteolytic activity. Thus, this work aimed to obtain a pure bromelain extract from the Ananas comosus L. Merril juice by membrane separation process. A 2² experimental planning was used to study the influence of pH and transmembrane pressure on the activity recovery by micro-filtration using a plain membrane. In second step, this enzyme was purified by the ultra-filtration using a 10 kDa millipore kit. The best operation condition to bromelain concentration using the plain membrane was at pH 7.5 and transmembrane pressure of 0.05 bar, while 85% of bromelain activity was recovered. Ultra-filtration retained 100% of proteolytic activity and concentrated in 10 fold the bromelain extract. SDS-PAGE electrophoresis showed that the ultra-filtrated had high purity and the bromelain from A. comosus pulp had a molecular weight of 24.5 kDa.A concentração do suco de abacaxi é necessária para manter a atividade da bromelina e padronizar a composição e atividade proteolítica.

OBJECTIVES: Health vulnerability is associated with a higher risk of mortality and functional decline in older people in the community. However, few studies have evaluated the role of the Vulnerable Elders Survey (VES-13) in predicting clinical outcomes of hospitalized patients. In the present study, we tested the ability of the VES-13 to predict mortality and the need for invasive mechanical ventilation in older people hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: This prospective cohort included 91 participants aged X60 years who were confirmed to have COVID-19. VES-13 was applied, and the demographic, clinical, and laboratory variables were collected within 72h of hospitalization. A Poisson generalized linear regression model with robust variance was used to estimate the relative risk of death and invasive mechanical ventilation. RESULTS: Of the total number of patients, 19 (21%) died and 15 (16%) required invasive mechanical ventilation. Regarding health vulnerability, 54 (59.4%) participants were classified as non-vulnerable, 30 (33%) as vulnerable, and 7 (7.6%) as extremely vulnerable. Patients classified as extremely vulnerable and male sex were strongly and independently associated with a higher relative risk of in-hospital mortality (po0.05) and need for invasive mechanical ventilation (po0.05). CONCLUSION: Elderly patients classified as extremely vulnerable had more unfavorable outcomes after hospitalization for COVID-19. These data highlight the importance of identifying health vulnerabilities in this population
