Leveraging RISC-V to build an open-source (hardware) OS framework for reconfigurable IoT devices
With the growing interest in RISC-V systems and the endless possi bilities of creating customized hardware architectures, we introduce
the first proof of concept (PoC) implementation of ChamelIoT, the
first open-source agnostic hardware operating system (OS) frame work for reconfigurable Internet of Things (IoT) low-end devices. At
this stage, ChamelIoT, leveraging the Rocket Custom Co-Processor
Interface (RoCC), provides hardware acceleration support for thread
management and scheduling of three different OSes: RIOT, Zephyr,
and FreeRTOS. This paper overviews the overall ChamelIoT archi tecture and describes the implementation details of the current PoC
deployment. Our first experiments were carried out on a Xilinx
Arty-35T FPGA Evaluation kit and the preliminary results are very
promising, showing that the desired agnosticism and flexibility can
be achieved with determinism and performance advantages at a
reasonable cost of hardware resources
Operating systems for Internet of Things low-end devices: analysis and benchmarking
In the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), billions of wirelessly connected embedded devices rapidly became part of our daily lives. As a key tool for each Internet-enabled object, embedded operating systems (OSes) provide a set of services and abstractions which eases the development and speedups the deployment of IoT solutions at scale. This article starts by discussing the requirements of an IoT-enabled OS, taking into consideration the major concerns when developing solutions at the network edge, followed by a deep comparative analysis and benchmarking on Contiki-NG, RIOT, and Zephyr. Such OSes were considered as the best representative of their class considering the main key-points that best define an OS for resource-constrained IoT devices: low-power consumption, real-time capabilities, security awareness, interoperability, and connectivity. While evaluating each OS under different network conditions, the gathered results revealed distinct behaviors for each OS feature, mainly due to differences in kernel and network stack implementations. This work has been supported by national funds through FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia within the Project Scope: UID/CEC/00319/2019
Agnostic hardware-accelerated operating system for Low-End IoT
There is increasing pressure to optimize Internet
of things (IoT) low-end devices. The ever-growing number of
requirements and constraints is pushing towards maximizing
performance and real-time, but simultaneously minimizing power
consumption, form factor, and memory footprint. This has
motivated the adoption of Field-Programmable Gate Array
(FPGA) technology to accelerate computing-intensive workloads
in hardware. However, and despite the ongoing trend of migrating
application-level tasks to hardware, recently, the offload of
system software such as operating system (OS) services has
received little attention. This paper presents CHAMELIOT, a
framework for FPGA-based IoT platforms that provides agnostic
hardware acceleration to OS services by leveraging RISC-V
technology. CHAMELIOT allows for developers to run unmodified
applications in a set of well-established IoT OSes. Currently, the
framework has support for RIOT, Zephyr, and FreeRTOS. The
evaluation showed that latency and determinism can be enhanced
up to 10x while the system’s performance can be increased to
nearly 200%. CHAMELIOT will be open-sourced.This work has been supported by FCT -Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia within the R&D Units Project Scope: UIDB/00319/2020 and SFRH/BD/146678/2019
Present study is aimed at an evaluation of the genetic and environmental effects of the coat colour and physical characteristics on the first lactation yield in Holstein cows managed under shade. Data from 449 cows were analyzed by the least-squares method and Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) was used to estimate (co)variance components under the Animal Model. The results showed that predominantly white Holstein cows tended to present higher milk yield than those predominantly black, when managed in large stalls with fans and sprinklers in a tropical environment. The physical characteristics have negative association with milk yield, except for the hair diameter. This association favours the heat transfer through the coat and is widely favourable in hot environments. High heritability estimates together with the high genetic correlations of milk yield and the hair properties is an evidence of the possibility of a selection for increased milk yield together with the selection towards a less dense coat with thick, short, settled hairs
Comparison between rhinometric variables and nasal airing in children with mouth breathing
Purpose: to analyze the correlation between the values of nasal aeration and geometry of the nasal cavities, before and after nasal cleansing in children with mouth breathing.
Methods: 20 children aged 4 to 12 years old were chosen. The questionnaire Identification Index of Signs and Symptoms of Oral breathing was applied and nasal patency was assessed by nasal aeration, through the Altmann graded mirror, and the nasal geometry measured by acoustic rhinometry. After nasal cleansing and massage, the same aeration measurements and nasal geometry procedures were performed. Group normality was analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test considering the hypothesis of normal distribution whenever p>0.05. The Spearman’s test was applied to analyze the correlation between variables (p<0.05).
Results: there was a strong and significant correlation between nasal aeration and the corresponding cross-sectional area of the front of the inferior turbinate (CSA2) in the left cavity before cleansing. There were no correlations between the nasal aeration and other rhinometric variables.
Conclusion: there was a correlation between nasal aeration values and the anterior portion of the turbinates, before the massage and nasal cleansing technique, in mouth breathing children. There were no significant differences when the nasal aeration was correlated with other rhinometric variables.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The systematic review was carried out using search strategies based on keywords in indexed national and international databases, with the aim of identifying the existence of LPA applications in the area of risk and disaster management, more specifically in area of meteorology, considering the equipment that emits signals as critical infrastructure.
The objective this paper is to identify groups of stocks with similar characteristics (hypothetical portfolio), having as a goal the allocation of capital available for investment so as to understand the potential risks and possible returns that a potential investor could have. Therefore, cluster analysis technique was used on stocks traded at the São Paulo Stock Exchange. The period analyzed was from 1998 to 2002 for the construction of the clusters, and from 2002 to 2006 for the evaluation of the behavior of the portfolios originated from the cluster analysis. Five hypothetical portfolios were identified, being three of them considered suitable for a potential investor, as follows: Portfolio 1 – low risk, low return; Portfolio 3 – low risk, high return; and Portfolio 5: high risk, high return. The behavior evaluation of the suggested hypothetical portfolios showed the expected performance within the period from 2002 through 2006, proving the adequation of the cluster analysis technique. Nevertheless, despite the observed results, it is emphasized that a conjunctural analysis associated with mathematical and (or) econometric studies is essential to the construction of good investment portfolios.
