Wine routes in Spain: A case study

    Get PDF
Spain is a country with an enormous wine-growing tradition and with a huge tourist industry, although it has not made the importance of wine tourism profitable. Thus, it was not until 2000 that different official wine routes seemed to appear, with the main objective, amongst others, being to help develop rural areas where wine production is of crucial importance and to offer alternatives to traditional sun and beach tourism. In this paper, we will present an analysis of wine tourism in Spain based on the premise that wine (and regional cuisine) may be, and very frequently is, the main reason for visiting a certain area. To investigate this, we will present the results of an empirical study carried out in one of the official wine routes of Andalusia, a Spanish region where sun and beach tourism and cultural tourism represent a highly significant part of tourist activity. We have analysed how this tourist route is bringing about significant socioeconomic changes to the geographical area. To achieve this aim, we have conducted a survey of the companies involved in the wine route in order to ascertain their opinions on the impact and influence of the route. The main results of the study demonstrate the need to consolidate the development of such routes through collaboration between public institutions, ensuring the participation of all the different social actors involved

Reversible Nuclear-Lipid-Droplet Morphology Induced by Oleic Acid: A Link to Cellular-Lipid Metabolism

    Get PDF
Neutral lipidsÐinvolved in many cellular processesÐare stored as lipid droplets (LD), thosemainly cytosolic (cLD) along with a small nuclear population (nLD). nLD could be involved innuclear-lipid homeostasis serving as an endonuclear buffering system that would provide orincorporate lipids and proteins involved in signalling pathways as transcription factors andas enzymes of lipid metabolism and nuclear processes. Our aim was to determine if nLDconstituted a dynamic domain. Oleic-acid (OA) added to rat hepatocytes or HepG2 cells inculture produced cellular-phenotypic LD modifications: increases in TAG, CE, C, and PLcontent and in cLD and nLD numbers and sizes. LD increments were reversed on exclusionof OA and were prevented by inhibition of acyl-CoA synthetase (with Triacsin C) and thuslipid biosynthesis. Under all conditions, nLD corresponded to a small population (2±10%) oftotal cellular LD. The anabolism triggered by OA, involving morphologic and size changeswithin the cLD and nLD populations, was reversed by a net balance of catabolism, uponeliminating OA. These catabolic processes included lipolysis and the mobilization of hydrolyzedFA from the LD to cytosolic-oxidation sites. These results would imply that nLD areactively involved in nuclear processes that include lipids. In conclusion, nLD are a dynamicnuclear domain since they are modified by OA through a reversible mechanism in combinationwith cLD; this process involves acyl-CoA-synthetase activity; ongoing TAG, CE, and PLbiosynthesis. Thus, liver nLD and cLD are both dynamic cellular organelles.Fil: Lagrutta, Lucía Carolina. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Get PDF
The advent of the Internet, the advent of digital photography and the chance of digitalizing large volumes of photographs, negatives, slides or daguerreotypes revolutionized the field of commercial stock photography. This new digital environment forced stock photography to adapt to the changing needs of its users. One of the main measures that these agencies were faced with these new needs of users was to create their own websites through which to offer their products to their customers. Paper catalogs were replaced by online catalogs, facilitating access and cost savings to users. Stock photography business is constantly expanding, thus becoming more competitive. To stay in business and keep loyalty in customers, companies cannot stagnate and they need to improve their services every day to meet the demands of their users. Currently, there are several methods for assessing the quality of websites in general, but there is still no method focused on stock photography websites. This study aims to collect basic tools and features that stock photography websites should include, taking into account the needs and expectations of their users. To this end, the researcher conducted an observation and comparison of ten stock photography websites selected as a sample and she identified the main characteristics and resources of these kinds of websites. In addition, to obtain the views and needs of users, the researcher prepared two questionnaires. The study focused on a single type of users of these companies (buyers of images) and a specific type of companies, so-called traditional stock agencies. The findings of this research and the proposed site-evaluation method are intended to be useful for those professionals responsible for management or maintenance of stock photography websites. Furthermore, these findings may also be useful in the preparation of future methods focused on the needs of different types of users.Joint Master Degree in Digital Library Learning (DILL

Physical and Chemical treatments on Chitosan Matrix to modify film properties and kinetics of biodegradation

    Get PDF
This work was focused on analyzing the effect produced by the addition of tannic acid as a crosslinking agent of chitosan matrix and the influence of the heat treatment applied. Taking into account those aspects relevant for packaging applications, thermal stability, mechanical properties, water resistance and kinetics of biodegradation of the film were monitored. The chemical crosslinking as well as the curing of the matrices have improved the mechanical properties and those related to the water affinity such as solubility, permeability and contact angle. Although both processes had an influence on the extent of the film degradation, these materials conserved their biodegradable character. Moreover, it was observed a synergistic effect of both chemical and physical treatments since the two processes in simultaneous caused further delay in the biodegradation. Consequently, in these materials the access to fungal attack and all those reactions mediated by the presence of water were restricted, which confirmed the higher stability of the matrices submitted to chemical or physical crosslinking.Fil: Rivero, Sandra G. Genetic diversity of squash landraces (Cucurbita maxima) collected in Andean Valleys of Argentina = Diversidad genética de poblaciones de zapallo (Cucurbita maxima) colectadas en los valles andinos de la Argentina

    Get PDF
Squash landraces (Cucurbita maxima) are maintained by small farmers as a major nutritional food. Twenty seven of these landraces were collected in Argentinian Andean Valleys and morphologically characterized. Genetic diversity was evaluated with microsatellite markers designed for Cucurbita pepo and Cucumis melo and evaluated for the first time in C. maxima. Seven microsatellite primers detected 26 alleles with 3.10 average alleles per locus. The Genetic Diversity reached an average of 0.26; a Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) of 0.20 and 45.5% of polymorphic loci. Higher diversity was found at intra population level. No evidence of lineal correlation between the observed diversity and the geographical distribution of squash landraces was found. Results demonstrate a moderate genetic diversity for all populations, with a wide range of variation in different groups. A subgroup of 10 populations with the highest levels of genetic diversity was considered for maintenance within core collections in the Vegetable Crop Germplasm Bank of Agricultural Research Station (EEA) La Consulta, Mendoza, National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA). Anthropogenic and environmental processes, mainly abandonment of cultivated areas and frequent droughts could erode squash landraces diversity. Conservational strategies and new collecting expeditions can be decided based on the genetic diversity found. SCOPE: Phenolic compounds are minor components of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Secoiridoids are the major components contributing to the phenolic content of EVOO. {Silva, 2015 #95}Information is lacking regarding their potential as biomarkers for EVOO intake. METHODS AND RESULTS: Healthy volunteers (n = 9) ingested 50 mL of EVOO in a single dose containing 322 mg/kg total phenolic content (caffeic acid equivalents) and 6 mg/20g hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives. Plasma was collected before (0h) and at 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 6h after ingestion. Urine samples were collected prior to ingestion (0h) and at 0-4, 4-8, 8-15 and 15-24h. Samples were analysed by UPLC coupled with an Exactive Orbitrap MS. Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis with Orthogonal Signal Correction was applied to screen for metabolites that allowed samples discrimination. Plasma biomarkers and urine biomarkers were selected although individual variability was observed among volunteers. Results are in accordance with in vitro experiments performed (in vitro digestion and hepatic microsomal activity assays). CONCLUSIONS: Plasma (elenolic acid + H2 ; p-HPEA-EA + H2 + glucuronide) and urinary (3,4-DHPEA-EA, 3,4-DHPEA-EA + H2 +glucuronide, methyl 3,4-DHPEA-EA + H2 +glucuronide) secoiridoid compounds were selected as biomarkers to monitor EVOO intake showing good predictive ability according to multivariate analysis
