    Reality conditions for Ashtekar variables as Dirac constraints

    We show that the reality conditions to be imposed on Ashtekar variables to recover real gravity can be implemented as second class constraints a la Dirac. Thus, counting gravitational degrees of freedom follows accordingly. Some constraints of the real theory turn out to be non-polynomial, regardless of the form, polynomial or non-polynomial, taken for the reality conditions. We comment upon the compatibility of our approach with the recently proposed Wick transform point of view, as well as on some alternatives for dealing with such second class constraints.Comment: 16 pages, plain LaTeX, submitted to Class.     Estudio de la propagacion vegetativa natural y ganancia de peso en tulipanes plantados en Mulchen VIII region

    Resumen (Spanish, English)41 p.El Tulipán (Tulipa sp.), planta ampliamente cultivada en Holanda, fue estudiada en la localidad de Mulchén (73° 42' latitud Sur y 72° 20' longitud oeste) durante julio a diciembre de 1995 con el propósito de analizar su tasa de propagación vegetativa natural de bulbos florales y la ganancia de peso de bulbillos en la VIII Región de Chile. Se utilizaron bulbos de cuatro cultivares importados desde Nueva Zelanda (Lily Schier (LS), Klara Park (KP), Pandion (PA) y Queen of the Night (QN). Se trabajó con tres calibres diferentes (perímetros menor a 6 cm, 6 a 8 cm, y superior a 8 cm) de bulbos que tenían una temporada de cultivo en Chile y de bulbos recién llegados a Chile (perímetro superior a 8 cm). Se realizaron mediciones de peso, diámetro y número de bulbos antes de la plantación y a la cosecha. Como conclusión se obtuvo que a mayor perímetro de bulbos florales mayor es la tasa de propagación (número de bulbos y bulbillos producidos a partir de un bulbo floral) siendo la proporción de bulbos florales y bulbillos de aproximadamente 50%. Por otra parte no hubo una tendencia clara en la ganancia de peso entre los cuatro cultivares pero fue superior a la máxima señalada en literatura. Además se encontró una correlación inversamente proporcional entre la ganancia de peso y el número total de bulbos y bulbillos producidos durante el proceso de engorda

    The current and future role of artificial intelligence in optimizing donor organ utilization and recipient outcomes in heart transplantation

    Heart failure (HF) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. While medical management and mechanical circulatory support have undergone significant advancement in recent years, orthotopic heart transplantation (OHT) remains the most definitive therapy for refractory HF. OHT has seen steady improvement in patient survival and quality of life (QoL) since its inception, with one-year mortality now under 8%. However, a significant number of HF patients are unable to receive OHT due to scarcity of donor hearts. The United Network for Organ Sharing has recently revised its organ allocation criteria in an effort to provide more equitable access to OHT. Despite these changes, there are many potential donor hearts that are inevitably rejected. Arbitrary regulations from the centers for Medicare and Medicaid services and fear of repercussions if one-year mortality falls below established values has led to a current state of excessive risk aversion for which organs are accepted for OHT. Furthermore, non-standardized utilization of extended criteria donors and donation after circulatory death, exacerbate the organ shortage. Data-driven systems can improve donor-recipient matching, better predict patient QoL post-OHT, and decrease needless organ waste through more uniform application of acceptance criteria. Thus, we propose a data-driven future for OHT and a move to patient-centric and holistic transplantation care processes

    Cardiovascular risk assessment in the resource limited setting of Western Honduras: An epidemiological perspective

    Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) epidemiology varies significantly among Low and Middle-Income Countries. Honduras is the Central American country with the highest Ischemic Heart Disease and CVD mortality rates. The aim of this study was to assess the individual CVD risk factors and calculate Cardiovascular Risk Assessment Scores (CVRAS) from the population. Methods: A cross-sectional study in western Honduras. Estimation of CV risk was performed using Framingham, MESA, ACC/AHA-PCEs and ESC SCORE calculators. Results: 38% were male. For men and women respectively; 49% and 48% had self-reported hypertension (HTN), on measured blood pressure only 18% and 30% had normal readings. Diabetes Mellitus was reported in 19% and 22%. Tobacco use was 14% and 3%. Self-reported regular exercise was 39.9% and 25%. Obesity was diagnosed in 24% and 24%. Lipid profile; total cholesterol was ≥200 mg/dl in 63% of subjects. LDL-C was elevated (>100 mg/dl) in 74% of participants, 9% had LDL-C levels higher than 190 mg/dl. Triglycerides were high (>160 mg/dl) in 60%, of these subjects 22% were taking lipid-lowering medications. 52% reported family-history of CVD. The risk calculation for men and women respectively for each CVRAS were; AHA/ACC-PCEs high risk (score ≥ 7.5%) in 62% and 30%, FRS high risk (score ≥ 20%) 46% and 15%, MESA high risk (Score ≥ 7.5%) in 70.6% and 17.7%, ESC SCORE high risk (score ≥ 5% in 32.4% and 11.8%). Conclusions: CV risk calculations revealed higher than rates than expected with consequently reflected on higher than estimated CVRAS. This represents the first report of its kind in Honduras

    The Astropy Problem

    The Astropy Project (http://astropy.org) is, in its own words, "a community effort to develop a single core package for Astronomy in Python and foster interoperability between Python astronomy packages." For five years this project has been managed, written, and operated as a grassroots, self-organized, almost entirely volunteer effort while the software is used by the majority of the astronomical community. Despite this, the project has always been and remains to this day effectively unfunded. Further, contributors receive little or no formal recognition for creating and supporting what is now critical software. This paper explores the problem in detail, outlines possible solutions to correct this, and presents a few suggestions on how to address the sustainability of general purpose astronomical software

    Lake salinization drives consistent losses of zooplankton abundance and diversity across coordinated mesocosm experiments

    Human-induced salinization increasingly threatens inland waters; yet we know little about the multifaceted response of lake communities to salt contamination. By conducting a coordinated mesocosm experiment of lake salinization across 16 sites in North America and Europe, we quantified the response of zooplankton abundance and (taxonomic and functional) community structure to a broad gradient of environmentally relevant chloride concentrations, ranging from 4 to ca. 1400 mg Cl- L-1. We found that crustaceans were distinctly more sensitive to elevated chloride than rotifers; yet, rotifers did not show compensatory abundance increases in response to crustacean declines. For crustaceans, our among-site comparisons indicate: (1) highly consistent decreases in abundance and taxon richness with salinity; (2) widespread chloride sensitivity across major taxonomic groups (Cladocera, Cyclopoida, and Calanoida); and (3) weaker loss of functional than taxonomic diversity. Overall, our study demonstrates that aggregate properties of zooplankton communities can be adversely affected at chloride concentrations relevant to anthropogenic salinization in lakes.Peer reviewe

    Widespread variation in salt tolerance within freshwater zooplankton species reduces the predictability of community-level salt tolerance

    The salinization of freshwaters is a global threat to aquatic biodiversity. We quantified variation in chloride (Cl-) tolerance of 19 freshwater zooplankton species in four countries to answer three questions: (1) How much variation in Cl- tolerance is present among populations? (2) What factors predict intraspecific variation in Cl- tolerance? (3) Must we account for intraspecific variation to accurately predict community Cl- tolerance? We conducted field mesocosm experiments at 16 sites and compiled acute LC(50)s from published laboratory studies. We found high variation in LC(50)s for Cl- tolerance in multiple species, which, in the experiment, was only explained by zooplankton community composition. Variation in species-LC50 was high enough that at 45% of lakes, community response was not predictable based on species tolerances measured at other sites. This suggests that water quality guidelines should be based on multiple populations and communities to account for large intraspecific variation in Cl- tolerance.Peer reviewe

    Current water quality guidelines across North America and Europe do not protect lakes from salinization

    Human-induced salinization caused by the use of road deicing salts, agricultural practices, mining operations, and climate change is a major threat to the biodiversity and functioning of freshwater ecosystems. Yet, it is unclear if freshwater ecosystems are protected from salinization by current water quality guidelines. Leveraging an experimental network of land-based and in-lake mesocosms across North America and Europe, we tested how salinization-indicated as elevated chloride (C-) concentration-will affect lake food webs and if two of the lowest Cl- thresholds found globally are sufficient to protect these food webs. Our results indicated that salinization will cause substantial zooplankton mortality at the lowest Cl- thresholds established in Canada (120 mg Cl-/L) and the United States (230 mg Cl-/L) and throughout Europe where Cl- thresholds are generally higher. For instance, at 73% of our study sites, Cl- concentrations that caused a >= 50% reduction in cladoceran abundance were at or below Cl thresholds in Canada, in the United States, and throughout Europe. Similar trends occurred for copepod and rotifer zooplankton. The loss of zooplankton triggered a cascading effect causing an increase in phytoplankton biomass at 47% of study sites. Such changes in lake food webs could alter nutrient cycling and water clarity and trigger declines in fish production. Current Cl- thresholds across North America and Europe clearly do not adequately protect lake food webs. Water quality guidelines should be developed where they do not exist, and there is an urgent need to reassess existing guidelines to protect lake ecosystems from human-induced salinization.Peer reviewe
