Development of classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma in an adult with biallelic STXBP2 mutations
Experimental model systems have delineated an important role for cytotoxic lymphocytes in the immunosurveillance of cancer. In humans, perforin-deficiency has been associated with occurrence of hematologic malignancies. Here, we describe an Epstein-Barr virus-positive classical Hodgkin's lymphoma in a patient harboring biallelic mutations in STXBP2, a gene required for exocytosis of perforin-containing lytic granules and associated with familial hemophagocytic lymphohistocytosis. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes were found infiltrating the tumor, and a high frequency of Epstein-Barr virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes were detected in peripheral blood. However, lytic granule exocytosis and cytotoxicity by cytotoxic T lymphocytes, as well as natural killer cells, were severely impaired in the patient. Thus, the data suggest a link between defective lymphocyte exocytosis and development of lymphoma in STXBP2-deficient patients. Geometric phases for generalized squeezed coherent states
A simple technique is used to obtain a general formula for the Berry phase
(and the corresponding Hannay angle) for an arbitrary Hamiltonian with an
equally-spaced spectrum and appropriate ladder operators connecting the
eigenstates. The formalism is first applied to a general deformation of the
oscillator involving both squeezing and displacement. Earlier results are shown
to emerge as special cases. The analysis is then extended to multiphoton
squeezed coherent states and the corresponding anholonomies deduced.Comment: 15 page
The Design, Fabrication and Testing of Infrared Traffic Counter on Selected Major Dual-Carriageways in Akure - Nigeria
Conventional intrusive traffic counters such as inductive loop, pneumatic tubes, piezo- sensors are expensive to install and maintain, and are not readily available for various urban roads to facilitate traffic data collection, also manual counts by transport professionals have proven to be ineffective and prone to errors. The aim of this research is to design, fabricate and test an infrared traffic counter on the selected major dual carriageways in Akure metropolis. The counter was fabricated from these locally available materials such as Infrared transmitter and receiver, Microcontroller, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), Oscillator, Connecting Wires, Mother board, Batteries, Capacitor, Resistor, and Pyrex plastic. The circuits for the infrared transmitter, microcontroller and receiver were designed by an existing software programs called “MIDE and “PROTUSE. Also locally designed counter, manual counts method and conventional counter were employed to collect volume. The volume result from the designed counter compared to the conventional counter was found to be 99% accurate. The volume/capacity result shows heavy congestion which shows unstable flow, high density and severe restrictions on a driver‟s ability to manoeuvre, with poor comfort and convenience. This research has shed light on the need to design locally made traffic counters which has overcame the demerit of manual counting on roads and eradicate the cost incurred in securing or purchasing an automatic counter
Favorable resuscitation characteristics in patients undergoing extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation:A secondary analysis of the INCEPTION-trial
Introduction: Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) is increasingly used as a supportive treatment for refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Still, there is a paucity of data evaluating favorable and unfavorable prognostic characteristics in patients considered for ECPR. Methods: We performed a previously unplanned post-hoc analysis of the multicenter randomized controlled INCEPTION-trial. The study group consisted of patients receiving ECPR, irrespective of initial group randomization. The patients were divided into favorable survivors (cerebral performance category [CPC] 1–2) and unfavorable or non-survivors (CPC 3–5).Results: In the initial INCEPTION-trial, 134 patients were randomized. ECPR treatment was started in 46 (66%) of 70 patients in the ECPR treatment arm and 3 (4%) of 74 patients in the conventional treatment arm. No statistically significant differences in baseline characteristics, medical history, or causes of arrest were observed between survivors (n = 5) and non-survivors (n = 44). More patients in the surviving group had a shockable rhythm at the time of cannulation (60% vs. 14%, p = 0.037), underwent more defibrillation attempts (13 vs. 6, p = 0.002), and received higher dosages of amiodarone (450 mg vs 375 mg, p = 0.047) despite similar durations of resuscitation maneuvers. Furthermore, non-survivors more frequently had post-ECPR implantation adverse events. Conclusion: The persistence of ventricular arrhythmia is a favorable prognostic factor in patients with refractory OHCA undergoing an ECPR-based treatment. Protons in near earth orbit
The proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.1 to 200 GeV was measured
by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at
an altitude of 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the observed spectrum is
parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a substantial second
spectrum was observed concentrated at equatorial latitudes with a flux ~ 70
m^-2 sec^-1 sr^-1. Most of these second spectrum protons follow a complicated
trajectory and originate from a restricted geographic region.Comment: 19 pages, Latex, 7 .eps figure
Search for antihelium in cosmic rays
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle
Discovery during flight STS-91 in a 51.7 degree orbit at altitudes between 320
and 390 km. A total of 2.86 * 10^6 helium nuclei were observed in the rigidity
range 1 to 140 GV. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper
limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of < 1.1 * 10^-6 is obtained.Comment: 18 pages, Latex, 9 .eps figure
A Study of Cosmic Ray Secondaries Induced by the Mir Space Station Using AMS-01
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a high energy particle physics
experiment that will study cosmic rays in the to range and will be installed on the International Space Station
(ISS) for at least 3 years. A first version of AMS-02, AMS-01, flew aboard the
space shuttle \emph{Discovery} from June 2 to June 12, 1998, and collected
cosmic ray triggers. Part of the \emph{Mir} space station was within the
AMS-01 field of view during the four day \emph{Mir} docking phase of this
flight. We have reconstructed an image of this part of the \emph{Mir} space
station using secondary and emissions from primary cosmic rays
interacting with \emph{Mir}. This is the first time this reconstruction was
performed in AMS-01, and it is important for understanding potential

Isolation, Identification and Antibiotic Resistance Profile of Public Health Threat Enteric Bacteria from Milk and Dairy Products Retail in Abakaliki, South-East, Nigeria
Milk and foods made from milk is manufactured into more stable dairy products of worldwide value, such as butter, cheese, ice cream, and yoghurt. Consumption of contaminated milk or dairy products by pathogens causes human gastrointestinal infection, which leads to diarrheal disease in human and hospitalization or death in severe cases especially among elderly and children. An assessment of milk and dairy products was designed to determine the microbiological quality of milk and dairy products consumed in Abakaliki, Nigeria. Culture techniques were used for isolation of enteric bacteria from retail dairy products and disk diffusion method were used to determine the Antibiotic Resistance profile of isolates. Bacteria pathogens isolated were characterized and identified using morphological and biochemical techniques. SPSS and Chi-square test were used for the analysis of the study, P-value of 0.02 indicates a significant difference between the bacteria pathogens counts. A total of 161 pathogenic bacteria were isolated from 100 dairy products. Salmonella spp heard (26.1%), Escherichia coli (44.1%) and Shigella spp. (29.8%). All identified isolates were found to be 100% susceptible to ciprofloxacin and gentamycin, with 66.7% for ofloxacin. Augmentin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol and spectinomycin was 100% resistant. Data obtained confirm that milk and dairy products retailed in Abakaliki pose a serious public health threat to consumers due to the presence of pathogenic bacteria. Standard and good storage conditions, as well as environmental and personnel hygiene should be practiced to prevent contamination of milk and dairy products for the safety of consumers
Measurement of W Polarisation at LEP
The three different helicity states of W bosons produced in the reaction e+
e- -> W+ W- -> l nu q q~ at LEP are studied using leptonic and hadronic W
decays. Data at centre-of-mass energies \sqrt s = 183-209 GeV are used to
measure the polarisation of W bosons, and its dependence on the W boson
production angle. The fraction of longitudinally polarised W bosons is measured
to be 0.218 \pm 0.027 \pm 0.016 where the first uncertainty is statistical and
the second systematic, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation
Search for Anomalous Couplings in the Higgs Sector at LEP
Anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson are searched for through the processes
e^+ e^- -> H gamma, e^+ e^- -> e^+ e^- H and e^+ e^- -> HZ. The mass range 70
GeV < m_H < 190 GeV is explored using 602 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity
collected with the L3 detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies
sqrt(s)=189-209 GeV. The Higgs decay channels H -> ffbar, H -> gamma gamma, H
-> Z\gamma and H -> WW^(*) are considered and no evidence is found for
anomalous Higgs production or decay. Limits on the anomalous couplings d, db,
Delta(g1z), Delta(kappa_gamma) and xi^2 are derived as well as limits on the H
-> gamma gamma and H -> Z gamma decay rates
