    Agreement between youth-reported and parent-reported psychopathology in a referred sample

    Objective: The study examined parent-youth agreement regarding reports on psychopathology among adolescents suffering from psychiatric disorders. Method: A total of 1,718 patients between the age of 11 and 18, as well as their parents, were assessed using the child behavior checklist (CBCL), and the youth self-report (YSR). Results: Poor to low agreement between parent- and adolescent-reported problem behavior on the internalizing scale, the total problem scale and moderate agreement concerning the externalizing scale of the CBCL and the YSR were found. Independent from the amount of psychiatric diagnoses, adolescents reported significantly less behavioral problems than their parents. Concerning externalizing problems, parent-youth disagreement was stronger for patients suffering from comorbid psychiatric disorders, than for adolescents displaying only one psychiatric disorder. Conclusion: In clinically referred children, parents are likely to emphasize the severity of the difficulties, whereas adolescents’ under-report symptoms

    The German version of the Anorectic Behavior Observation Scale (ABOS)

    Objective: To assess the performance of the German version of the Anorectic Behavior Observation Scale (ABOS) as a parent-report screening instrument for eating disorders (ED) in their children. Methods: Parents of 101 ED female patients (80 with Anorexia Nervosa; 21 with Bulimia Nervosa) and of 121 age- and socioeconomic status (SES)-matched female controls completed the ABOS. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis supported the original three-factor structure model of the ABOS. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients indicated good internal consistency for the three factors and the total score in the total sample. The best cut-off point (100% sensitivity and specificity) in the German version was ≄23. Conclusion: The ABOS may be a useful additional instrument for assessing ED

    The psychological well-being of Norwegian adolescents exposed in utero to radiation from the Chernobyl accident

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>On 26 April 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant suffered an accident. Several areas of central Norway were heavily affected by far field radioactive fallout. The present study focuses on the psychological well-being of adolescents who were exposed to this radiation as fetuses.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The adolescents (n = 53) and their mothers reported their perceptions of the adolescents' current psychological health as measured by the Youth Self Report and Child Behaviour Checklist.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In spite of previous reports of subtle cognitive deficits in these exposed adolescents, there were few self-reported problems and fewer problems reported by the mothers. This contrasts with findings of studies of children from the former Soviet Union exposed in utero, in which objective measures are inconsistent, and self-reports, especially by mothers, express concern for adolescents' cognitive functioning and psychological well-being.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In the current paper, we explore possible explanations for this discrepancy and suggest that protective factors in Norway, in addition to perceived physical and psychological distance from the disaster, made the mothers less vulnerable to Chernobyl-related anxiety, thus preventing a negative effect on the psychological health of both mother and child.</p

    Aversive tension in female adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa: a controlled ecological momentary assessment using smartphones

    BACKGROUND: Current models of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) emphasize the role of emotion regulation. Aversive tension, described as a state of intense arousal and negative valence, is considered to be a link between emotional events and disordered eating. Recent research focused only on adult patients, and mainly general emotion regulation traits were studied. However, the momentary occurrence of aversive tension, particularly in adolescents with AN, has not been previously studied. METHOD: 20 female adolescents with AN in outpatient treatment and 20 healthy adolescents aged 12 to 19years participated in an ecological momentary assessment using their smartphones. Current states of aversive tension and events were assessed hourly for two consecutive weekdays. Mean and maximum values of aversive tension were compared. Multilevel analyses were computed to test the influence of time and reported events on aversive tension. The effect of reported events on subsequent changes of aversive tension in patients with AN were additionally tested in a multilevel model. RESULTS: AN patients showed higher mean and maximum levels of aversive tension. In a multilevel model, reported food intake was associated with higher levels of aversive tension in the AN group, whereas reported school or sport-related events were not linked to specific states of aversive tension. After food intake, subsequent increases of aversive tension were diminished and decreases of aversive tension were induced in adolescents with AN. CONCLUSIONS: Aversive tension may play a substantial role in the psychopathology of AN, particular in relation with food intake. Therefore, treatment should consider aversive tension as a possible intervening variable during refeeding. Our findings encourage further research on aversive tension and its link to disordered eating.     The interplay between affective and cognitive factors in shaping early proficiency in mathematics

    Performing math tasks is a complex process that requires the recruitment of many cognitive and affective factors. Research on the interplay between cognitive and affective factors associated with math ability is surprisingly scarce in primary school children. In the present study, we examined the contribution of both general and mathspecific anxiety to math performance in a large sample of second-grade schoolchildren, and also their relation with different measures of both domain-general (i.e., spatial and verbal working memory, intelligence) and domain-specific cognitive correlates of math ability (i.e., different skills tapping the approximate number system, ANS). Results revealed a negative relation between general anxiety (but not math anxiety) and math performance, beyond the contribution of the cognitive abilities. Importantly, specific components of both verbal working memory (i.e., digit span) and ANS (i.e., approximate addition) mediated the relation between general anxiety and math performance. The educational implications of these findings are discussed
