    Surface warming and atmospheric circulation dominate rainfall changes over tropical rainforests under global warming

Avaiolable on open access from AGU via the DOI in this recordThis study investigates how the direct effects of CO2 quadrupling on plant physiology impact precipitation in three main rainforests. We show that differences between the regions lie in how land‐surface warming (driven by reduced transpiration) interacts with their climatological atmospheric circulations, regardless of their reliance on evapotranspiration. Various atmosphere‐only experiments from two General Circulation Models are used. We find that over New Guinea, land‐surface warming amplifies moisture convergence from the ocean and increases rainfall. In the Congo, no clear rainfall changes emerge as the land‐surface warming effect is offset by migrations of rainfall. In Amazonia, the interaction of land‐surface warming with the climatological circulation pattern leads to a precipitation‐change dipole, with reduced rainfall in central and eastern Amazonia and increased rainfall in the west.Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC

    In this 5th part of Espon Cartographic Language Final Report, our aim is to identify good practices, as well in the development of interactive cartographic environments such as atlases, as in innovative cartographic constructions. Our proposals target several levels:- The level of applications themselves: which functionalities have to be use, for what applications and what objectives?-The level of cartographic representations, meaning the possibilities to introduce elements of animation and interactivity in maps, depending on data and objectives: what innovations for which representation?To achieve such aims, we use two types of resources:- a collection of interactive atlases, considered as the most representative of the diversity in european statistical atlases, which we have analyzed and compared.- the collection of maps presented in Task 4, that we propose to enrich with functions of interaction and animation.The first part of Task 5 deals with recommendations, coming from a comparative analysis of european statistical atlases. These recommendations depend on the type of environment to be made (environment of visualization, analysis or exploration), and on the desired interactivity level.The second part deals with recommendations to create interactive and animated maps. They are illustrated by concrete proposals, in the form of summary datasheet.The final part deals with a comparison of computer tools that can be used to make innovative cartographic applications

    Review of the state of the art in recent computer technologies and related cartographic software in support of ensuring an innovative cartographic language. The service provider is asked to review the state of the art in recent computer technologies and related cartographic software development in support of ensuring an innovative cartographic language. The service provider shall, based on this review, present options for modernising the ESPON Cartographic Language. The fulfilment of this task should not be limited only to more “traditional” cartography, but explore new options for adding new cartographic concepts, types of illustrations and computer animated presentations, that could support the presentation of the geography of policy orientations and forward-looking territorial evidence to the European territorial policy arena. The review shall lead to recommendations of cartographic technologies and techniques to consider in a modernised ESPON Cartographic Language. It shall be used as input for recommendations on new cartographic elements to consider in a modernised ESPON Cartographic Language under task 4 and 5. Three dimensions for an Innovative cartographic language will be explored in three directions:- Former Semiotic language combined with new technologies- Usability of the produced representations - Focus on added dimensions like interactivity, animation, multimedia, 3D, etc

    Sign of the crossed conductances at a FSF double interface

    Crossed conductance in hybrid Ferromagnet / Superconductor / Ferromagnet (FSF) structures results from the competition between normal transmission and Andreev reflection channels. Crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) and elastic cotunneling (EC) between the ferromagnets are dressed by local Andreev reflections, which play an important role for transparent enough interfaces and intermediate spin polarizations. This modifies the simple result previously obtained at lowest order, and can explain the sign of the crossed resistances in a recent experiment [D. Beckmann {\sl et al.}, cond-mat/0404360]. This holds both in the multiterminal hybrid structure model (where phase averaging over the Fermi oscillations is introduced ``by hand'' within the approximation of a single non local process) and for infinite planar interfaces (where phase averaging naturally results in the microscopic solution with multiple non local processes).Comment: 9 pages, 7 figure

    Characterization of the near-Earth Asteroid 2002NY40

    In August 2002, the near-Earth asteroid 2002 NY40, made its closest approach to the Earth. This provided an opportunity to study a near-Earth asteroid with a variety of instruments. Several of the telescopes at the Maui Space Surveillance System were trained at the asteroid and collected adaptive optics images, photometry and spectroscopy. Analysis of the imagery reveals the asteroid is triangular shaped with significant self-shadowing. The photometry reveals a 20-hour period and the spectroscopy shows that the asteroid is a Q-type

    Defective NKT cell development in mice and humans lacking the adapter SAP, the X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome gene product

    SAP is an adaptor protein expressed in T cells and natural killer cells. It plays a critical role in immunity, as it is mutated in humans with X-linked lymphoproliferative syndrome (XLP), a fatal immunodeficiency characterized by an abnormal response to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. SAP interacts with the SLAM family receptors and promotes transduction signal events by these receptors through its capacity to recruit and activate the Src kinase FynT. Because it has been previously established that FynT is selectively required for the development of NKT cells, we examined NKT cells in SAP-deficient mice and in humans with XLP. In the absence of SAP, the development of NKT cells is severely impaired both in mice and in humans. These results imply that SAP is a potent regulator of NKT cell development. They also identify for the first time a defect in NKT cells associated with a human primary immunodeficiency, revealing a potential role of NKT cells in the immune response to EBV

    Exploring the impact of cancer registry completeness on international cancer survival differences: a simulation study

    Background Data from population-based cancer registries are often used to compare cancer survival between countries or regions. The ICBP SURVMARK-2 study is an international partnership aiming to quantify and explore the reasons behind survival differences across high-income countries. However, the magnitude and relevance of differences in cancer survival between countries have been questioned, as it is argued that observed survival variations may be explained, at least in part, by differences in cancer registration practice, completeness and the availability and quality of the respective data sources. Methods As part of the ICBP SURVMARK-2 study, we used a simulation approach to better understand how differences in completeness, the characteristics of those missed and inclusion of cases found from death certificates can impact on cancer survival estimates. Results Bias in 1- and 5-year net survival estimates for 216 simulated scenarios is presented. Out of the investigated factors, the proportion of cases not registered through sources other than death certificates, had the largest impact on survival estimates. Conclusion Our results show that the differences in registration practice between participating countries could in our most extreme scenarios explain only a part of the largest observed differences in cancer survival

    The impact of excluding or including Death Certificate Initiated (DCI) cases on estimated cancer survival: A simulation study

    Background Population-based cancer registries strive to cover all cancer cases diagnosed within the population, but some cases will always be missed and no register is 100 % complete. Many cancer registries use death certificates to identify additional cases not captured through other routine sources, to hopefully add a large proportion of the missed cases. Cases notified through this route, who would not have been captured without death certificate information, are referred to as Death Certificate Initiated (DCI) cases. Inclusion of DCI cases in cancer registries increases completeness and is important for estimating cancer incidence. However, inclusion of DCI cases will generally lead to biased estimates of cancer survival, but the same is often also true if excluding DCI cases. Missed cases are probably not a random sample of all cancer cases, but rather cases with poor prognosis. Further, DCI cases have poorer prognosis than missed cases in general, since they have all died with cancer mentioned on the death certificates. Methods We performed a simulation study to estimate the impact of including or excluding DCI cases on cancer survival estimates, under different scenarios. Results We demonstrated that including DCI cases underestimates survival. The exclusion of DCI cases gives unbiased survival estimates if missed cases are a random sample of all cancer cases, while survival is overestimated if these have poorer prognosis. Conclusion In our most extreme scenarios, with 25 % of cases initially missed, the usual practice of including DCI cases underestimated 5-year survival by at most 3 percentage points

    Limits to sustained energy intake. XXII. Reproductive performance of two selected mouse lines with different thermal conductance

    Abstract Maximal sustained energy intake (SusEI) appears limited, but the factors imposing the limit are disputed. We studied reproductive performance in two lines of mice selected for high and low food intake (MH and ML, respectively), and known to have large differences in thermal conductance (29% higher in the MH line at 21°C). When these mice raised their natural litters, their metabolisable energy intake significantly increased over the first 13 days of lactation and then reached a plateau. At peak lactation, MH mice assimilated on average 45.3 % more energy than ML mice (222.9±7.1 and 153.4±12.5 kJ day-1, N=49 and 24, respectively). Moreover, MH mice exported on average 62.3 kJ day-1 more energy as milk than ML mice (118.9±5.3 and 56.6±5.4 kJ day-1, N= subset of 32 and 21, respectively). The elevated milk production of MH mice enabled them to wean litters (65.2±2.1 g) that were on average 50.2% heavier than litters produced by ML mothers (43.4±3.0 g), and pups that were on average 27.2% heavier (9.9±0.2 and 7.8±0.2 g, respectively). Lactating mice in both lines had significantly longer and heavier guts compared to non-reproductive mice. However, inconsistent with the central limit hypothesis, the ML mice had significantly longer and heavier intestines than MH mice. An experiment where the mice raised litters of the opposing line demonstrated that lactation performance was not limited by offspring growth capacity. Our findings are consistent with the idea that the SusEI at peak lactation is constrained by the capacity of the mothers to dissipate body heat.</jats:p
