    Earlier English learning in Finland from the teacher perspective:evaluating the impacts to children with language-based learning difficulties

    Abstract. This thesis studies earlier English learning in Finland from the teacher perspective and evaluates its impacts on children who are experiencing language-based learning difficulties. The main emphasis is to find answers as to how early English teaching is organised in Finnish schools and what type materials and resources teachers have available. Additionally, the thesis looks to find clarity on whether early English is perceived to be significant to a child’s language development, and if any specific benefits or disadvantages are related to early English learning. Language-related learning disabilities were viewed in connection to mother language and foreign language learning while evaluating how personality, personal characteristics and a child’s family background may impact the learning process. The thesis includes a theoretical framework related to the before mentioned aspects and in addition, teachers’ perceptions were gathered via an electronic survey targeted to 1–6 grade mother language and English language teachers. The survey responses of 10 teachers as well the follow up interview to which three of the teachers volunteered are analysed in this this thesis. Key conclusion of the thesis was that for the most part, early English learning is seen as significant for a child’s language skill development, and it brings a lot of enthusiasm, joy and inspiration to many children. With early English, and especially with children who experience language-based learning disabilities, it is vital that 1st and 2nd grade teaching of English is functional and focused on building child’s communicative skills. Research findings indicated that learning difficulties in mother language can easily transfer to foreign language learning. In addition, the early English classes has reduced number of Finnish and mathematics classes, and few teachers perceived this as significantly weakening a child’s abilities in learning both subjects. However, the teachers felt that appropriately conducted early English learning can improve pronunciation, learning of vocabulary and willingness to use the language, which all may support and ease the English studies once stepping to 3rd grade.Tiivistelmä. Tämä gradu tutki varhennetun englannin opetusta Suomessa opettajan näkökulmasta ja arvioi mahdollisia vaikutuksia lapsiin, joilla ilmenee kielellisiä oppimisvaikeuksia. Tavoitteena oli etsiä vastauksia siihen, miten englannin opetus on organisoitu suomalaisissa kouluissa, sekä millaisia materiaaleja ja resursseja opettajilla on käytettävissä. Lisäksi gradu pyrki selvittämään koetaanko varhennettu englanti merkittäväksi lapsen kielellisen kehityksen kannalta ja että, onko varhennetulla englannilla yhteyksiä erityisiin hyötyihin tai haittoihin. Kielellisiä oppimisvaikeuksia tarkisteltiin äidinkielen ja vieraan kielen yhteyksien kautta, ja lisäksi arvioitiin onko personallisuudella, piirteillä ja lapsen perhetaustalla vaikutusta oppimisprosessiin. Gradun teoreettinen viitekehys kattaa edellä mainitut aihealueet, ja lisäksi sähköisen kyselyn avulla kartoitettiin 1–6 luokkien äidinkielen ja englannin opettajien näkemyksiä aiheesta. Tutkimukseen osallistuneiden kymmenen opettajan vastaukset on esitetty tässä työssä, sisältäen lisäksi jatkohaastattelun tulokset, johon osallistui kolme vapaaehtoista opettajaa. Gradun aineiston kautta saatu johtopäätös oli, että suurelta osin varhennettu englanti nähdään merkittävänä lapsen kielellisen kehityksen kannalta, ja se tuo paljon innostusta, iloa ja inspiraatiota monille lapsille. Varhennetun englannin ja erityisesti kielellisiä oppimisvaikeuksia kokevien lapsien kohdalla, on olennaista, että ensimmäisen ja toisen luokan englannin opetus on toiminnallista ja keskittynyttä rakentamaan lapsen viestinnällisiä taitoja. Tutkimutulokset viittasivat siihen, että äidinkielen oppimisen haasteet siirtyvät helposti vieraan kielen oppimiseen. Lisäksi varhennetun englannin tunnit on vähennetty äidinkielen ja matematiikan opinnoista, jonka osa opettajista koki selkeästi heikentävän lapsen kykyjä oppia kyseisiä oppiaineita. Oikealla tavalla toteutettu varhennetun englannin opetus voi kuitenkin parantaa ääntämistä, sanaston kerttymistä ja halukkuutta käyttää kieltä, mitkä kaikki voivat tukea ja helpottaa englannin oppimista kolmannelle luokalle siirryttäessä

    Quantum sticking, scattering and transmission of 4He atoms from superfluid 4He surfaces

    We develop a microscopic theory of the scattering, transmission, and sticking of 4He atoms impinging on a superfluid 4He slab at near normal incidence, and inelastic neutron scattering from the slab. The theory includes coupling between different modes and allows for inelastic processes. We find a number of essential aspects that must be observed in a physically meaningful and reliable theory of atom transmission and scattering; all are connected with multiparticle scattering, particularly the possibility of energy loss. These processes are (a) the coupling to low-lying (surface) excitations (ripplons/third sound) which is manifested in a finite imaginary part of the self energy, and (b) the reduction of the strength of the excitation in the maxon/roton region

    Anti-neuronal anti-bodies in patients with early psychosis

    It may be challenging to distinguish autoimmune encephalitis associated with anti-neuronal autoantibodies from primary psychiatric disorders. Here, serum was drawn from patients with a first-episode psychosis (n = 70) or a clinical high-risk for psychosis (n = 6) and controls (n = 34). We investigated the serum prevalence of 24 antineuronal autoantibodies: IgG antibodies for anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate-type glutamate receptor (anti-NMDAR), glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid alpha and beta receptors (GABA-a, GABA-b), alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPA), glycine receptor (GlyR), metabotropic glutamate receptor 1 and 5 (mGluR1, mGluR5), anti-Tr/Delta/notch-like epidermal growth factor-related receptor (DNER), contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CASPR2), myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG), glutamic acid decarboxylase-65 (GAD65), collapsin response mediator protein 5/crossveinless-2 (CV2), aquaporin-4 (AQP4), anti-dipeptidyl-peptidase-like protein-6 (DPPX), type 1 anti-neuronal nuclear antibody (ANNA-1, Hu), Ri, Yo, IgLON5, Ma2, zinc finger protein 4 (ZIC4), Rho GTPase-activating protein 26, amphiphysin, and recoverin, as well as IgA and IgM for dopamine-2-receptor (DRD2). Anti-NMDA IgG antibodies were positive with serum titer 1:320 in one patient with a clinical high risk for psychosis. He did not receive a diagnosis of encephalitis after comprehensive neurological evaluation.     Single Particle and Fermi Liquid Properties of He-3/--He-4 Mixtures: A Microscopic Analysis

    We calculate microscopically the properties of the dilute He-3 component in a He-3/--He-4 mixture. These depend on both, the dominant interaction between the impurity atom and the background, and the Fermi liquid contribution due to the interaction between the constituents of the He-3 component. We first calculate the dynamic structure function of a He-3 impurity atom moving in He-3. From that we obtain the excitation spectrum and the momentum dependent effective mass. The pole strength of this excitation mode is strongly reduced from the free particle value in agreement with experiments; part of the strength is distributed over high frequency excitations. Above k > 1.7A˚\AA^{-1}$ the motion of the impurity is damped due to the decay into a roton and a low energy impurity mode. Next we determine the Fermi--Liquid interaction between He-4 atoms and calculate the pressure-- and concentration dependence of the effective mass, magnetic susceptibility, and the He-3--He-3 scattering phase shifts. The calculations are based on a dynamic theory that uses, as input, effective interactions provided by the Fermi hypernetted--chain theory. The relationship between both theories is discussed. Our theoretical effective masses agree well with recent measurements by Yorozu et al. (Phys. Rev. B 48, 9660 (1993)) as well as those by R. Simons and R. M. Mueller (Czekoslowak Journal of Physics Suppl. 46, 201 (1996)), but our analysis suggests a new extrapolation to the zero-concentration limit. With that effective mass we also find a good agreement with the measured Landau parameter F_0^a.Comment: 47 pages, 15 figure

    A novel desmoplakin mutation causes dilated cardiomyopathy with palmoplantar keratoderma as an early clinical sign

    Background PPKs represent a heterogeneous group of disorders with hyperkeratosis of palmar and/or plantar skin. PPK, hair shaft abnormalities, cardiomyopathy and arrhythmias can be caused by mutations in desmosomal genes, e.g. desmoplakin (DSP). PPK should trigger genetic testing to reveal mutations with possible related cardiac disease. Objectives To report a large multigenerational family with a novel DSP mutation associated with early-onset PPK and adult-onset cardiomyopathy and arrhythmias. Methods A custom-designed in-house panel of 35 PPK related genes was used to screen mutations in the index patient with focal PPK. The identified DSP mutation was verified by Sanger sequencing. DNA samples from 20 members of the large multigenerational family were sequenced for the DSP mutation. Medical records were reviewed. Clinical dermatological evaluation was performed, including light microscopy of hair samples. Cardiac evaluation included clinical examination, echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), electrocardiogram (ECG), Holter monitoring and laboratory tests. Results We identified a novel autosomal dominant truncating DSP c.2493delA p.(Glu831Aspfs*33) mutation associated with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) with arrhythmia susceptibility and focal PPK as an early cutaneous sign. The mutation was found in nine affected family members, but not in any unaffected members. Onset of dermatological findings preceded cardiac symptoms which were variable and occurred at adult age. Conclusions We report a novel truncating DSP mutation causing focal PPK with varying severity and left ventricular dilatation and ventricular extrasystoles. This finding emphasizes the importance of genetic diagnosis in patients with PPK for clinical counselling and management of cardiomyopathies and arrhythmias.Peer reviewe

    Identifying brain changes related to cognitive aging using VBM and visual rating scales

    Aging is often associated with changes in brain structures as well as in cognitive functions. Structural changes can be visualized with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) using voxel-based grey matter morphometry (VBM) and visual rating scales to assess atrophy level. Several MRI studies have shown that possible neural correlates of cognitive changes can be seen in normal aging. It is still not fully understood how cognitive function as measured by tests and demographic factors are related to brain changes in the MRI. We recruited 55 healthy elderly subjects aged 50–79 years. A battery of cognitive tests was administered to all subjects prior to MRI scanning. Our aim was to assess correlations between age, sex, education, cognitive test performance, and the said two MRI-based measures. Our results show significant differences in VBM grey matter volume for education level (≤ 12 vs. > 12 years), with a smaller amount of grey matter volume in subjects with lower educational levels, and for age in interaction with education, indicating larger grey matter volume for young, higher educated adults. Also, grey matter volume was found to be correlated with working memory function (Digit Span Backward). Furthermore, significant positive correlations were found between visual ratings and both age and education, showing larger atrophy levels with increasing age and decreasing level of education. These findings provide supportive evidence that MRI-VBM detects structural differences for education level, and correlates with educational level and age, and working memory task performance.</p

    Regional trajectories in life expectancy and lifespan variation: Persistent inequality in two Nordic welfare states

    An important dimension of inequality in mortality is regional variation. However, studies that investigate regional mortality patterns within and between national and regional borders are rare. We carry out a comparative study of Finland and Sweden: two welfare states that share many attributes, with one exception being their mortality trajectories. Although Finland has risen rapidly in the global life expectancy rankings, Sweden has lost its historical place among the top 10. Using individual‐level register data, we study regional trends in life expectancy and lifespan variation by sex. Although all regions, in both countries, have experienced substantial improvements in life expectancy and lifespan inequality from 1990–2014, considerable differences between regions have remained unchanged, suggesting the existence of persistent inequality. In particular, Swedish‐speaking regions in Finland have maintained their mortality advantage over Finnish‐speaking regions. Nevertheless, there is some evidence of convergence between the regions of Finland and Sweden

    Robust Inference of Monocot Deep Phylogeny Using an Expanded Multigene Plastid Data Set

    We use multiple photosynthetic, chlororespiratory, and plastid translation apparatus loci and their associated noncoding regions (ca. 16 kb per taxon, prior to alignment) to make strongly supported inferences of the deep internal branches of monocot phylogeny. Most monocot relationships are robust (an average of ca. 91 % bootstrap support per branch examined), including those poorly supported or unresolved in other studies. Our data strongly support a sister-group relationship between Asparagales and the commelinid monocots, the inclusion of the orchids in Asparagales, and the status of Petrosaviaceae as the sister group of all monocots except Acorus and Alismatales. The latter finding supports recognition of the order Petrosaviales. Also strongly supported is a placement of Petermannia disjunct from Colchicaceae (Liliales) and a sister-group relationship between Commelinales and Zingiberales. We highlight the remaining weak areas of monocot phylogeny, including the positions of Dioscoreales, Liliales, and Pandanales. Despite substantial variation in the overall rate of molecular evolution among lineages, inferred amounts of change among codon-position data partitions are correlated with each other across the monocot tree, consistent with low incongruence between these partitions. Ceratophyllum and Chloranthaceae appear to have a destabilizing effect on the position of the monocots among other angiosperms; the issue of monocot placement in broader angiosperm phylogeny remains problematic

    Considerations for best practices in studies of fiber or other dietary components and the intestinal microbiome. Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 315: E1087–E1097, 2018. First published August 21, 2018; doi:10.1152/ajpendo.00058.2018.—A 2-day workshop organized by the National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Agriculture included 16 presentations focused on the role of diet in alterations of the gastrointestinal microbiome, primarily that of the colon. Although thousands of research projects have been funded by U.S. federal agencies to study the intestinal microbiome of humans and a variety of animal models, only a minority addresses dietary effects, and a small subset is described in sufficient detail to allow reproduction of a study. Whereas there are standards being developed for many aspects of microbiome studies, such as sample collection, nucleic acid extraction, data handling, etc., none has been proposed for the dietary component; thus this workshop focused on the latter specific point. It is important to foster rigor in design and reproducibility of published studies to maintain high quality and enable designs that can be compared in systematic reviews. Speakers addressed the influence of the structure of the fermentable carbohydrate on the microbiota and the variables to consider in design of studies using animals, in vitro models, and human subjects. For all types of studies, strengths and weaknesses of various designs were highlighted, and for human studies, comparisons between controlled feeding and observational designs were discussed. Because of the lack of published, best-diet formulations for specific research questions, the main recommendation is to describe dietary ingredients and treatments in as much detail as possible to allow reproduction by other scientists

    Truncating <em>NFKB1 </em>variants cause combined NLRP3 inflammasome activation and type I interferon signaling and predispose to necrotizing fasciitis

    \ua9 2024 The AuthorsIn monogenic autoinflammatory diseases, mutations in genes regulating innate immune responses often lead to uncontrolled activation of inflammasome pathways or the type I interferon (IFN-I) response. We describe a mechanism of autoinflammation potentially predisposing patients to life-threatening necrotizing soft tissue inflammation. Six unrelated families are identified in which affected members present with necrotizing fasciitis or severe soft tissue inflammations. Exome sequencing reveals truncating monoallelic loss-of-function variants of nuclear factor κ light-chain enhancer of activated B cells (NFKB1) in affected patients. In patients’ macrophages and in NFKB1-variant-bearing THP-1 cells, activation increases both interleukin (IL)-1β secretion and IFN-I signaling. Truncation of NF-κB1 impairs autophagy, accompanied by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and reduced degradation of inflammasome receptor nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain, leucine-rich repeat-containing protein 3 (NLRP3), and Toll/IL-1 receptor domain-containing adaptor protein inducing IFN-β (TRIF), thus leading to combined excessive inflammasome and IFN-I activity. Many of the patients respond to anti-inflammatory treatment, and targeting IL-1β and/or IFN-I signaling could represent a therapeutic approach for these patients
