Electromechanical Reliability Testing of Three-Axial Silicon Force Sensors
This paper reports on the systematic electromechanical characterization of a
new three-axial force sensor used in dimensional metrology of micro components.
The siliconbased sensor system consists of piezoresistive mechanicalstress
transducers integrated in thin membrane hinges supporting a suspended flexible
cross structure. The mechanical behavior of the fragile micromechanical
structure isanalyzed for both static and dynamic load cases. This work
demonstrates that the silicon microstructure withstands static forces of 1.16N
applied orthogonally to the front-side of the structure. A statistical Weibull
analysis of the measured data shows that these values are significantly reduced
if the normal force is applied to the back of the sensor. Improvements of the
sensor system design for future development cycles are derived from the

Participatory arts interventions promote interpersonal and intergroup prosocial intentions in middle childhood
We report the results of two experiments which test the potential of arts engagement for promoting prosocial intentions. Experiment 1 (N = 216) tested the impact of a participatory arts intervention (vs. a control condition) on children's empathy and interpersonal prosocial intentions. Experiment 2 (N = 174) tested the impact of a participatory arts intervention (vs. a control condition) on children's prosocial intentions toward outgroup members under competitive and non-competitive conditions. Experiment 1 showed that the participatory arts intervention significantly increased children's interpersonal prosocial intentions, but not their empathy. Experiment 2 showed that, under competitive conditions, the participatory arts intervention significantly increased prosocial intentions toward outgroup members, an effect that persisted for six months beyond the intervention. Under non-competitive conditions, the participatory arts intervention consolidated improvements in prosocial intentions toward outgroup members. Overall, the results confirm the hypothesis that participatory arts engagement can promote prosocial intentions during middle childhood
Modular DSLs for flexible analysis: An e-Motions reimplementation of Palladio
We address some of the limitations for extending and validating MDE-based implementations of NFP analysis tools by presenting a modular, model-based partial reimplementation of one well-known analysis framework, namely the Palladio Architecture Simulator. We specify the key DSLs from Palladio in the e-Motions system, describing the basic simulation semantics as a set of graph transformation rules. Di erent properties to be analysed are then encoded as separate, parametrised DSLs, independent of the de nition of Palladio. These can then be composed with the base Palladio DSL to generate speci c simulation environments. Models created in the Palladio IDE can be fed directly into this simulation environment for analysis. We demonstrate two main benefits of our approach: 1) The semantics of the simulation and the nonfunctional properties to be analysed are made explicit in the respective DSL speci cations, and 2) because of the compositional de nition, we can add de nitions of new non-functional properties and their analyses.Universidad de Málaga. The physical determinants of the thickness of lamellar polymer crystals
Based upon kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of crystallization in a simple
polymer model we present a new picture of the mechanism by which the thickness
of lamellar polymer crystals is constrained to a value close to the minimum
thermodynamically stable thickness. This description contrasts with those given

Children and parent’s looking preferences to gender-typed objects: Evidence from eye-tracking
Differences between children and parents’ implicit and explicit gender stereotypes were investigated in two experiments. For the first time, the visual world paradigm compared parents’ and 7-year-old children’s looking preferences towards masculine- and feminine-typed objects stereotypically associated with a story character’s gender. In Experiment 1, participants listened to sentences that included a verb that inferred intentional action with an object (e.g. ‘Lilly/Alexander will play with the toy”), and in Experiment 2 the verb was replaced with a neutral verb (e.g. ‘Lilly/Alexander will trip over the toy”). A questionnaire assessed participants’ explicit gender stereotype endorsement (and knowledge, Experiment 2) of children’s toys. Results revealed that parents and children displayed similar implicit, but different explicit, stereotypes to one another. In Experiment 1, both displayed looking preferences towards the masculine-typed object when the story character was male, and looking preferences toward the feminine-typed object when the character was female. No gender effects were found with a neutral verb in Experiment 2, reinforcing the impact of gender stereotypes on implicit processing, and showing that the effects are not simply driven by gender stereotypic name-object associations. In the explicit measure, parents did not endorse the gender stereotypes related to toys, but appeared egalitarian, whilst children’s responses were gender-stereotypic

Fiber Acoustic Waveguide : A Sensor Candidate
Sensor development plays a key role in the field of nondestructive evaluation and process control. The annual fiber optic sensor market alone is a multimillion dollar business (1). Acoustic waves are about five orders of magnitude slower than optical waves and can also be guided in cladded glass fibers, similar to optical fibers, with low loss and low dispersion (2–7). Fiber acoustic waveguides are believed to be a very attractive and basic component for further sensor development (8). In this paper a brief theoretical description of a weakly guiding acoustic fiber (7) is given. The material selection criteria for the core and the cladding of the fiber guide, the properties of single-mode operation, and some sensing mechanisms for temperature and pressure variations are discussed. The acoustic waveguide with a liquid core is also considered
Identification of PKD1L1 Gene Variants in Children with the Biliary Atresia Splenic Malformation Syndrome
Biliary atresia (BA) is the most common cause of end‐stage liver disease in children and the primary indication for pediatric liver transplantation, yet underlying etiologies remain unknown. Approximately 10% of infants affected by BA exhibit various laterality defects (heterotaxy) including splenic abnormalities and complex cardiac malformations — a distinctive subgroup commonly referred to as the biliary atresia splenic malformation (BASM) syndrome. We hypothesized that genetic factors linking laterality features with the etiopathogenesis of BA in BASM patients could be identified through whole exome sequencing (WES) of an affected cohort. DNA specimens from 67 BASM subjects, including 58 patient‐parent trios, from the NIDDK‐supported Childhood Liver Disease Research Network (ChiLDReN) underwent WES. Candidate gene variants derived from a pre‐specified set of 2,016 genes associated with ciliary dysgenesis and/or dysfunction or cholestasis were prioritized according to pathogenicity, population frequency, and mode of inheritance. Five BASM subjects harbored rare and potentially deleterious bi‐allelic variants in polycystin 1‐like 1, PKD1L1, a gene associated with ciliary calcium signaling and embryonic laterality determination in fish, mice and humans. Heterozygous PKD1L1 variants were found in 3 additional subjects. Immunohistochemical analysis of liver from the one BASM subject available revealed decreased PKD1L1 expression in bile duct epithelium when compared to normal livers and livers affected by other non‐cholestatic diseases. Conclusion WES identified bi‐allelic and heterozygous PKD1L1 variants of interest in 8 BASM subjects from the ChiLDReN dataset. The dual roles for PKD1L1 in laterality determination and ciliary function suggest that PKD1L1 is a new, biologically plausible, cholangiocyte‐expressed candidate gene for the BASM syndrome
Action spectroscopy of gas-phase carboxylate anions by multiple photon IR electron detachment/attachment
We report on a form of gas-phase anion action spectroscopy based on infrared
multiple photon electron detachment and subsequent capture of the free
electrons by a neutral electron scavenger in a Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron
Resonance (FTICR) mass spectrometer. This method allows one to obtain
background-free spectra of strongly bound anions, for which no dissociation
channels are observed. The first gas-phase spectra of acetate and propionate
are presented using SF6 as electron scavenger and a free electron laser as
source of intense and tunable infrared radiation. To validate the method, we
compare infrared spectra obtained through multiple photon electron
detachment/attachment and multiple photon dissociation for the benzoate anion.
In addition, different electron acceptors are used, comparing both associative
and dissociative electron capture. The relative energies of dissociation (by
CO2 loss) and electron detachment are investigated for all three anions by DFT
and CCSD(T) methods. DFT calculations are also employed to predict vibrational
frequencies, which provide a good fit to the infrared spectra observed. The
frequencies of the symmetric and antisymmetric carboxylate stretching modes for
the aliphatic carboxylates are compared to those previously observed in
condensed-phase IR spectra and to those reported for gas-phase benzoate,
showing a strong influence of the solution environment and a slight substituent
effect on the antisymmetric stretch.Comment: Revised version, Submitted to J Phys Chem
