Analytic study of the urn model for separation of sand
We present an analytic study of the urn model for separation of sand recently
introduced by Lipowski and Droz (Phys. Rev. E 65, 031307 (2002)). We solve
analytically the master equation and the first-passage problem. The analytic
results confirm the numerical results obtained by Lipowski and Droz. We find
that the stationary probability distribution and the shortest one among the
characteristic times are governed by the same free energy. We also analytically
derive the form of the critical probability distribution on the critical line,
which supports their results obtained by numerically calculating Binder

Dynamics of vibrofluidized granular gases in periodic structures
The behavior of a driven granular gas in a container consisting of
connected compartments is studied employing a microscopic kinetic model. After
obtaining the governing equations for the occupation numbers and the granular
temperatures of each compartment we consider the various dynamical regimes. The
system displays interesting analogies with the ordering processes of phase
separating mixtures quenched below the their critical point. In particular, we
show that below a certain value of the driving intensity the populations of the
various compartments become unequal and the system clusterizes. Such a
phenomenon is not instantaneous, but is characterized by a time scale, ,
which follows a Vogel-Vulcher exponential behavior. On the other hand, the
reverse phenomenon which involves the ``evaporation'' of a cluster due to the
driving force is also characterized by a second time scale which diverges at
the limit of stability of the cluster.Comment: 11 pages, 17 figure
Influence of Carbon Concentration on the Superconductivity in MgCxNi3
The influence of carbon concentration on the superconductivity (SC) in
MgCNi has been investigated by measuring the low temperature specific
heat combined with first principles electronic structure calculation. It is
found that the specific heat coefficient of the
superconducting sample () in normal state is twice that of the
non-superconducting one (). The comparison of measured
and the calculated electronic density of states (DOS) shows that the
effective mass renormalization changes remarkably as the carbon concentration
changes. The large mass renormalization for the superconducting sample and the
low (7K) indicate that more than one kind of boson mediated
electron-electron interactions exist in MgCNi.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Direct Observation of Shock-Induced Disordering of Enstatite Below the Melting Temperature
We report in situ structural measurements of shock-compressed single crystal orthoenstatite up to 337 ± 55 GPa on the Hugoniot, obtained by coupling ultrafast X-ray diffraction to laser-driven shock compression. Shock compression induces a disordering of the crystalline structure evidenced by the appearance of a diffuse X-ray diffraction signal at nanosecond timescales at 80 ± 13 GPa on the Hugoniot, well below the equilibrium melting pressure (>170 GPa). The formation of bridgmanite and post-perovskite have been indirectly reported in microsecond-scale plate-impact experiments. Therefore, we interpret the high-pressure disordered state we observed at nanosecond scale as an intermediate structure from which bridgmanite and post-perovskite crystallize at longer timescales. This evidence of a disordered structure of MgSiO3 on the Hugoniot indicates that the degree of polymerization of silicates is a key parameter to constrain the actual thermodynamics of shocks in natural environments. © 2020. Fermi Surface Variation of Ce 4f-electrons in Hybridization Controlled Heavy-Fermion Systems
Ce 3d-4f resonant angle-resolved photoemission measurements on
CeCoGeSi and CeCoSi have been performed to understand the
Fermi surface topology as a function of hybridization strength between Ce 4-
and conduction electrons in heavy-fermion systems. We directly observe that the
hole-like Ce 4-Fermi surfaces of CeCoSi is smaller than that of
CeCoGeSi, indicating the evolution of the Ce 4-Fermi surface
with the increase of the hybridization strength. In comparision with LDA
calculation, the Fermi surface variation cannot be understood even though the
overall electronic structure are roughly explained, indicating the importance
of strong correlation effects. We also discuss the relation between the Ce

First-Principles Study of Magnetic Properties of 3dTransition Metals Doped in ZnO Nanowires
The defect formation energies of transition metals (Cr, Fe, and Ni) doped in the pseudo-H passivated ZnO nanowires and bulk are systematically investigated using first-principles methods. The general chemical trends of the nanowires are similar to those of the bulk. We also show that the formation energy increases as the diameter of the nanowire decreases, indicating that the doping of magnetic ions in the ZnO nanowire becomes more difficult with decreasing diameter. We also systematically calculate the ferromagnetic properties of transition metals doped in the ZnO nanowire and bulk, and find that Cr ions of the nanowire favor ferromagnetic state, which is consistent with the experimental results. We also find that the ferromagnetic coupling state of Cr is more stable in the nanowire than in the bulk, which may lead to a higherTcuseful for the nano-materials design of spintronics
Pulse-shape discrimination between electron and nuclear recoils in a NaI(Tl) crystal
Abstract: We report on the response of a high light-output NaI(Tl) crystal to nuclear recoils induced by neutrons from an Am-Be source and compare the results with the response to electron recoils produced by Compton-scattered 662 keV γ-rays from a 137Cs source. The measured pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) power of the NaI(Tl) crystal is found to be significantly improved because of the high light output of the NaI(Tl) detector. We quantify the PSD power with a quality factor and estimate the sensitivity to the interaction rate for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with nucleons, and the result is compared with the annual modulation amplitude observed by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment. The sensitivity to spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions based on 100 kg·year of data from NaI detectors is estimated with simulated experiments, using the standard halo model. © 2015, The Author(s)1371Nsciescopu
A review of analytical methods for the determination of four new phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors in biological samples and pharmaceutical preparations
The introduction of oral phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor therapy in 1998 revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is the most common sexual problem in men. It often has a profound effect on intimate relationships and quality of life. The analysis of pharmaceuticals is an important part of the drug development process as well as for routine analysis and quality control of commercial formulations. Whereas the determination of sildenafil citrate, vardenafil and tadalafil are well documented by a variety of methods, there are few publications about the determination of udenafil, lodenafil carbonate, mirodenafil and avanafil. The paper presents a brief review of the action mechanism, adverse effects, pharmacokinetics and the most recent analytical methods that can determine drug concentration in biological matrices and pharmaceutical formulations of these four drugs.A introdução da terapia oral com inibidores da fosfodiesterase tipo 5, em 1998, revolucionou o tratamento da disfunção erétil. Enquanto a determinação do citrato de sildenafila, vardenafila e tadalafila está bem documentada por uma variedade de métodos, existem poucas publicações sobre a determinação de udenafila, carbonato de lodenafila, mirodenafila e avanafila. A multi-center study on the attitudes of Malaysian emergency health care staff towards allowing family presence during resuscitation of adult patients
BACKGROUND
The practice of allowing family members to witness on-going active resuscitation has been gaining ground in many developed countries since it was first introduced in the early 1990s. In many Asian countries, the acceptability of this practice has not been well studied.
AIM
We conducted a multi-center questionnaire study to determine the attitudes of health care professionals in Malaysia towards family presence to witness ongoing medical procedures during resuscitation.
METHODS
Using a bilingual questionnaire (in Malay and English language), we asked our respondents about their attitudes towards allowing family presence (FP) as well as their actual experience of requests from families to be allowed to witness resuscitations. Multiple logistic regression was used to analyze the association between the many variables and a positive attitude towards FP.
RESULTS
Out of 300 health care professionals who received forms, 270 responded (a 90% response rate). Generally only 15.8% of our respondents agreed to allow relatives to witness resuscitations, although more than twice the number (38.5%) agreed that relatives do have a right to be around during resuscitation. Health care providers are significantly more likely to allow FP if the procedures are perceived as likely to be successful (e.g., intravenous cannulation and blood taking as compared to chest tube insertion). Doctors were more than twice as likely as paramedics to agree to FP (p-value = 0.002). This is probably due to the Malaysian work culture in our health care systems in which paramedics usually adopt a 'follow-the-leader' attitude in their daily practice.
CONCLUSION
The concept of allowing FP is not well accepted among our Malaysian health care providers
